Experimenting with weird damascus from chainsaw chain steel.
I am able to make a solid bar from just chains pieces but the material is not fully clean. I would not attempt to make a blade out of chainsaw damascus steel only as even though it looks to be hardanable at the same temperatures of 1070 it's not as homogeneous so I'd fear the presence of weak spots.
If you want to see more about the handle construction this nakiri turned out well:
• Knife Making: Vegetabl...
Otherwise this is a playlist with every single blade I made, there are plenty with wa-style handle construction at this point:
• Knifemaking

1:28 Forge Weld
3:55 Chainsaw Chain Steel
4:32 Ni-Mai Stack
5:19 Profiling
6:18 Heat Treatment
7:02 Grind
8:03 Assembly

do you ever have issues with the style of handles you use all the time i figured if anyone you would know the pros and cons . do they loosen up at all or are they better then usual pin style or just glue

When I worked in electroplating, the first tank was a hot soapy tank to get rid of oil, then to an acid tank. I see a lot of people doing the chains and I never see anyone properly clean the oils and grease. Try it. Dawn and hot water. Boiling. We kept a flame under it.

Could you do; stacking beads of hard facing MIG wire, till it's an 1.5"x4" square roughly, cut it from the patent material and try forging it into a blade? That'd be interesting as well 🤔

If this actually works it will be a slow and steady job (also super interesting) the chances that you got that cleaned completely is low no matter how much cleaning you did And even Smith's with 50+ years of experience or that are masters of Damascus still have blowouts with regular Damascus patterns/layers Edit* so glad you took your time with this
