Château de la Grifferaie, S4, E25, "The Find...."

Ohhhhh we found something we did not expect in the Brocante. It was more than we wanted.... but also really special, and an unusual find for several reasons. Also updates on the Kitchen ceiling (done), the roof, and we visit a chateau for our anniversary. Enjoy
Thanks to all for your support of our non-profit www.loirevalle... and thanks to those who have supported the chateau reconstruction on Patreon www.patreon.co....

Oval platters are always for meat service. The rounder platters are usually for roasted root vegetables-potatoes.

I read a comment about your round platters, and they said the round ones were for veggies. And yes that's right. But my Grand mother used hers for both veggies and for sliced meats .thanks again. If you thought the dishes were expensive, wait till you buy the silverware for all those dishes.

My grandmama has 80 of the round players and there used in her set as chargers underneath the 10 inch diner plate and her set can accommodate 80 people it’s fabulous she had it made and there’s about over 800 pieces she also has fish platers and fish plats it’s crazy 🥰

What an exceptional find! Great decision to snap them up! You need to buy these things when you see them. Regardless of the historical use, those larger round serving dishes will be great for all sorts of salads, cold pasta dishes, fruit plates, vegetable dishes or saucy anything. Ps you can use the gravy boat for extra sauces for desserts as well, such as raspberry glaze, vanilla cream sauce, salad dressing, etc. no need to follow conventional use, use it for everything!

When those larger dishes are big enough, I think we can safely say they were used for serving rather than for individual use. Like the gazpacho Rob was squeamish to try! 😉😅 Also sliced or even whole fruit or berries in cream. Or just grilled or roasted vegetables.

Guys! I am SO GLAD you decided not to go home without that gorgeous monogrammed China! It was meant to be, worth every penny, and just too perfect for you to leave behind. I am thrilled for you to have found them! Hope they go in a display China cabinet so they can be enjoyed on and off your table. And Rob, if I may be so bold, please stop allowing the cost of your new roof to be the basis of all other purchases you make or desire to. The roof is a MUST, it HAS to be replaced, it is an expense in and of itself, in a totally different category. You can’t keep allowing it’s cost to keep you from enjoying perfect purchases like the China and a need for a good rotor tiller, so please relax in that regard OK. Like is meant to be enjoyed, not counted by dollar signs. 😊

Regarding the big porcelain set, I would leave note at the brocante, that if they got more, please call! Maybe they will tell you, where they got it, but probably an auction. If so, which one, do they know, who bought the rest? I would also do a google image search, check online matketplaces. I would also take a quick tour around all brocantes within a certain range. Because the set was obviously split in two! Because certainly there is missing tureens, deep plates, tea and coffeecups, tea- and coffeepots, vases, etc. Just because it would be just awesome to have a near complete set for the Chateau!! Worth some effort 😊 I would do a wall display in the diningroom 😁😁😁

I was wondering if those dishes were actually making their way home?? The chatelaine from "Doing It Ourselves" found a large piece of furniture for the foyer I think that was original to the chateau. (...or maybe it was the dining table & chairs). Anyway, If these things were sold at an estate sale long ago, then perhaps the nearby antique dealers have been actually holding them all this time, and the objects themselves have a mysterious way of making their way back to their first home. 😉☺🤔 ...if they're anything like the dishes in Beauty & The Beast that is!! 😁☺

The low raised platters are for serving salads and some veg. The highly raised ones on a high foot are for fruit. The middle height for cakes, sweets and the like. This was not meant as a tea service, but a full fledged dinner service, which in it's hay days was even more extensive. It's an incredible find for that money, congrats!!! Next.... buy the dinner silver to accompany it.

The deeper dishes are soup plates, the deeper dishes on a stem are for serving fresh fruit, then you have vegetable tureens. The oval serving plates are for serving meat or fish. The dinner service will/ should have side plates for bread, soups, fish course, main course, dessert plates then finally fruit/cheese plates. They generally start small and get larger as you go through the meal with the dessert and fruit being smaller again. It’s truly beautiful and wonderful to have so many items. The copper pans were amazing even at €59 for the set? It would have even an incredible price. You can get them retained, there’s a famous town in France the name I’ve forgotten which is the “home” of copper ware there’s a Frenchman who owns a workshop which retains any old copper ware, it’s much much cheaper than buying new. The set you’ve bought brand new would easily be €1000!

Those copper saucepans looked very reasonably priced. There is a channel called Sean’s World I think and he is an expert on all things copper. He also has an Etsy store selling copper and his wife has one selling embroidered table linens and sheets. They are English who have lived in France for some years now. Apparently the really valuable copper has particular stamps on the side but they keep that information close to their chest as does Billy Petherick. The information is probably available online with some research.

As a child my family had a very similar variety of "special occasion" china. Our place setting was for about 20 and the scale appears to be somewhat smaller but I remember serving pieces that were described as "meat platters" and "vegetable platters". The meat platters were obviously the larger flat pieces but the deeper pieces were used as serving bowls for vegetables or salads. Both of my parents have been gone for many years so I can no longer ask. I do remember the giant bowls working very well to carry hot vegetables with sauces to the table without sloshing onto the floor.

Is it possible that the china you found was originally from your chateau? I realize that may be a real stretch but wouldn't it be wonderful! Greatbjob on the ceiling. I have a story to tell you. My husband and I spent 30 years restoring an 1890s house in Illinois, USA. Wavy walls and ceilings is sometimes the result when refurbishing. We called it "character" and our home was part of the Christmas Tour of Homes the year before we sold it. I miss that old house but our kids were married and supporting themselves and the house was too big for just the two of us. Be kind to yourself. You're not going for perfection in the chateau you're working toward helping to perfect the souls of those you minister to. May God bless you both! We are 41 years in on our marriage and happily so.

Always prep properly, including tarps on the floors. The cleanup is a breeze, just pickup the four corner’s and dumps all the mess in the bin. Cleaning done.

The one is a charger and the other one is a dinner plate my one set that I have came with them the small covered dishes are covered vegetable dishes and the gravy is also for sauces The family that had them made had to be a prominent on and I’m sure there were more pieces that had gotten broke or lost There’s a cream and sugar that belongs to that set and a tea and cowfe pots My grandmama always says that your dinning table is your calling card if it’s set with bone chiner your gust will come back and also how the setting looks as well at each place set lol 🥰

What an amazing find! Those bowls on a stand ( the highest ones) are for putting fruit on. There are prabebly that many because you can decorate a huge table with them filled with fruit overspilling the rim! Or you put small cakes and mignardises on them. Shame there is no coffee service with it.

Happy anniversary and blessings be on you both! The cake stands seem to have two shapes, one a little deeper than the other. Might the deeper one be for a fruit compote?

Absolutely perfect set of china!... Angers is my favorite city in France too. I keep finding myself drawn to it over and over, so I've narrowed my search to within 100km of it....

The special china set is incredible! With your large groups, and the special events (where your students learn a bit more about the fine things in life, now and in the past), it should come in handy. Just beautiful. The painted ceiling in the other chateau is fabulous. I always wonder if the moat makes everything completely damp. What a problem to have, no? Though I'm in Southern CA, taking off the last half of August sounds like such a great idea. I start off the year planning and working hard to get things done, and by this time I run out of steam. I hope a bit more of the roof is done and sealed up before the roofers leave!

The ceiling came out beautiful!!! The kitchen is going to styling when you get the coving up and build the hood and frig shelves. 👍🏻 Rotor tiller smaller doesn’t mean easier a bigger heavy machine is better for larger jobs where the land has never or infrequently been tilled, whereas the smaller machine is better suited to smaller areas and a more gentle soil. The gravel I think the best machines to handle that is a skid steer with a ruckus rake attachment that will eat up that hard gravel dirt loosen it up and than you can use the skid steer to move the debris around to reestablish your driveway levels and smooth it out and compact it down ready for road-base.

Marriage is hard for everyone, on varying levels. There are good seasons and tough seasons and everything brings stress on each person and therefore on the relationship. None of us are perfect communicators, none of us can care for one another perfectly 100% of the time. Every human relationship has its challenges. Sometimes it is honouring just to say - we're glad God has brought us this far!

We have just had a week holiday in a small village called Noyant and yesterday on a trip out drove past your chateau. We could just see it over the maize fields and recognised it immediately , it’s a stunning building and the roof is starting to look amazing 👍
