Cessna Caravan Seaplane crashes next to the cruise ship I'm on in PortMiami.

Ғылым және технология

Excitement before this cruise even begins! So I'm down here in Miami for the weekend for Kevin Smith's #cruiseaskew. I'm a fan of his movies since high school! We just boarded the vessel and headed to the aft of the ship for a buffet lunch. Sitting outside up against the aft deck rail and a small sea plane comes into view splashing hard into the water. I grab my camera out of my lap and snap a few pictures as the pilot throttles up the engine trying to gain some altitude. It was too late, the right side pontoon took damage. The right side fuselage was already in the water and the prop was just slapping water. As he shut down the engine I grabbed my phone and called 911 and described the scene to the operator. My footage picks back up once off the phone. Maimi Dade police, fire and rescue, and the Coast Guard responded very quickly. From where I stood it looked like everyone exited the plane in good shape.

The Pratt & Whitney PT-6 engine has what’s called a “free turbine” which means it has a split shaft in which spinning the prop will not drive the engine, since the propeller and gearbox are powered only from the internal jet-blast produced by the engine thrust. That’s why the prop was being rotated by moving thru the water while under tow by the LE craft. Just a few sentences of almost useless information here.

Sad to see this plane go as my dad flew this exact plane for 26 years before it was sold to willis. I believe it was pilot error as in another clip you can see that the pontoon compartment door was open, which means that they probably forgot to lock it before take off. Which meant with that hard and bouncy landing I could assume thats why it started to sink.

Another site said they were having some kind of emergency. Maybe. That site showed final approach and touch down which looked a little hard maybe on the right side. Maybe it was so hard it damaged that pontoon. When they hauled it out of the water both pontoons looked like they were still aligned but....

It is obvious that the starboard pontoon is not doing its job. It has some amount of water in it, perhaps completely filled. Since it appears to be intact, I am baffled as to how this occurred. Since the access panels are on the top, both pontoons would have kept the plane upright until water entered the opening.

i have seen that plane in alaska a lot i fly there for a living, the right float pulled back a skin and it sunk the reason the prop isn't feathered is that the pitch latches (a must for turbine seaplane ops), are holding the blades from feathering, so the pilot pulled the power lever (throttle) all the way aft and shut it down immediately to prevent further damage. the reason its floating still is all the unaffected compartments (there are like 10 on ea. float) of the float are still ok and it takes a while for them to fill up, if at all, and also the wings have a sealed fuel tank that spans pretty far towards the outboard so there's air in their too.

PTZ has the full video of the police boats towing it to the bulkhead on the north side of the channel, where there is another seaplane up on the land. There is a ramp up from the water to the ramp parking area, as well as a J taxi line so this is indeed a routine flight op center . If I am not mistaken ( and I rarely am, or admit to it at least) this would be the same flight ops center the Chalks Air seaplanes would have used before they had one of their planes crash into the Government Cut jetty as it was taking off, in 2005 or 2006. Chalks ceased operations right after that crash.

It was fairly windy almost directly from the plane’s left to right in direction of travel. I’m guessing 15-20 knots or so. I was standing on the balcony of Freedom when this happened. The channel was fairly smooth as the cruise ships blocked the majority of the wind. The channel looked more choppy during the rescue due to all of the police boats close by. The touchdown appeared pretty hard and there were 2-3 bounces. He passed my balcony at or just below my height on deck 10. Our cabin was just aft of mid-ship port side. The gaps between the cruise ships could have caused wind gusts at those locations and swirling winds over the tops of the ships. Probably the worst wind direction for changing wind conditions along the landing path as you would be behind a cruise ship, then not, then behind the next.

Millions of dollars worth of police boats all arrive to float around and stare at the aircraft with their big donut-filled bellies hanging out.

The point you gloss over is they WERE there, and quickly. Not just several police boats but also the Miami-Dade Fire Dept boat. You probably also failed to consider the fact just how quickly they were towing the seaplane away. And clue why?? Let me help you out, I know it escapes you. Had that plane gone under, not only would Biscayne Bay be dealing with a haz mat spill and Miami Beach beaches might be impacted , but that would have shut down passage for all the cruise ships, impacting thousands of vacationers and cruise schedules for a while.

@@tallmansfavorites7563 Well said. There's a reason why that guy has a 'Jack.Ass' as his icon. It's fitting.
