something ive been working on.. i used to manage a raid archive at work and a media system for play back local and then another system for assets. All this crazy storage and all the raid companies still suggest that tapes are the best long term back up (my brain hurts) i budget 200 to 500 a year on drives to keep them all fresh just in case. Custom projects don't stay on my hard drives... Asset management people dont get how important it is.. 4.6 tb of 3d and textures / hdrs it all mounts up right happy new year dude.. hearing you speak makes me feel less crazy :)

It was while ago. The time has come and I want to take it seriously. So far, on and off I was using old version of c4d, just purchased new license. I know you're working in redshift at the moment and need an advice. Should I stick to octane or go redshift? What's better long term? Will maxon support it better and will it be more combined?. Also of you do privet zoom sessions am very interested. Thank you. Lech

A few questions. This is perfect timing by the way. I have been looking through so many videos to find someone that does 3d and video using a NAS. When editing taking render elements into after effects and editing/comping with them, do the image sequences load into the m.2 caching for faster playback? If not do you run into any lag with comping 4k render passes? How many passes have you worked with live on a timeline before getting any lag, if any? What do you recommend for SSDs for simulations? Do you raid any of the SSDs for redundancy, raid them all into one massive drive or keep them all separate and fill them up as individual drives? What would you recommend for the amount of ram? Can you have some drives as a raid redundancy, some as individuals, and some as a raid for backup? Or should backups and working files be separated on different hardware? Keep up the great content Andrey!

  • @AndreyLebrov

    @AndreyLebrov

    3 жыл бұрын

Is working without lags in AE possible? 😳 didn’t know that. Can’t answer some of your question as I don’t work in AE for a long time now. Editing, grading 6K raw from the server is not a problem. Don’t think caching is participating in footage readout, but It does participate in multiple files read outs, which sequences are :) I work with 30 passes on average if it’s something complicated. Expecting live preview on such comps is silly. Synology sell their own 4TB ssds. Any 3rd party would work too. Yes I do raid ssds for redundancy, dunno why. Habit 😄 max ram is recommended haha what else could I say. Backups should be done on a clone unit somewhere off-site as they are necessary in case your server gets physically destroyed. I don’t store any life important info on my home servers so I don’t need such backup. Hope this helps

Nice setup and explanation ! Just one comment : Raid 5 is good and secure but don't consider it can't fail (I'm sure you know that but found that the video could be misleading). I use a lot of nas (Synology, Qnap, Lacie etc...) in quite similar environnement for years and I can testify that sometimes you can / will loose your data. While on the hardware side it's quite unlikely to have 2 disks failing at the same time, on the software / controler side bad things can happen too and once a Raid 5 array gets corrupted it's very likely that you loose all your data. So as everything is centralized don't forget to do backup ;) One question related to 10g network : which switch do you use ? (I use netgear XS T serie but I'm not 100% happy with it) Thank you !

Amazing Video as always!! Would you be so kind please to tell, how big in size (GB, TB) can simulations in Houdini or in Cinema 4D get, for a professional project. I understand it all depends on the scene, delivery format and what exactly you are doing, but I would much appreciate if you could provide some example numbers. Many thanks ! Keep up the great work!

1TB sim is a normal thing for a very big sim. Mostly it’s much smaller stuff in size. It also depends on what channels you bake out. Difference can be unbelievable if you’re saving out just density, for example, or density, fuel and velocity. Velocity tends to take the most space

@@AndreyLebrov Many thanks for your prompt reply. Oh my God! As it seems I need to buy extra hard drive, or bigger in capacity. Will go with an external USB3 now as I am currently learning, (I am working with an ASUS TUF A15) and in time maybe I will invest in a synology small server :) Thank you again for our feedback and immediate response to my question. All the best!

Do these servers make audible noise when working? Like noise from the mechanical hard drives?

  • @AndreyLebrov

Yes they do. Depending on where they are placed it shouldn’t bother you though. Not louder than the workstation. In my case they’re right next to me, so yeah - I can hear them

Oh and of course if you’d use SSDs instead of HDDs there would be no noise at all

@@AndreyLebrov Thx Andrey. I have about 15TB of HDD's and they are the loudest part of my PC. Because of this I've decided to only buy SSD's in the future. Wish Synology would make a nice and small M.2 SSD server. Because I would totally buy that!

This is a bad idea in many ways, it looks amazing, however, speakers vibrate very strongly and emit magnetism both harmful to hard drives

  • @q6manic

Surely having the speakers over the magnetic drives might corrupt some data with those big ol' magnets in them? Otherwise great video!

I would strongly suggest you switch to synology's SHR2. If anything were to to happen to your NAS, ie. the atom bug that affected the 1815+ series, your raid5 array would be toast. SHR2 allows you to simply insert the pool drives into a new synology NAS and continue onwards with your data intact. I wouldn't touch raid5 in 2020. I lost a raid5 array 6 years ago in a qnap nas. 1 drive for redundancy when you're dealing with 12TB capacity drives is nightmare fuel in the event of a rebuild. Particularly so if the drives are from the same batch, then the probability of a second failure is high.

Yeah, was thinking the same thing. Maybe shielded speakers. Remember we used to have our loudspeaker next to our old “fat” tv, as a kid. And after some time it gave some interesting colour changes at the sides of the tv due to magnetic fields. Magnets + HHD not the best combo as far as I know. Liked the video! Good work!

Hi Andrey, I have a request for you, there are a lot of us who would like to switch to a 10g network. What really interests me is the data transfer speed, when we have caching disks, and when we don't. It is important to see how long we wait to load large files of a few GB, how long we wait for automatic storage. Personally, I have a studio of 7 people, we are planning more next year, such information would be more than useful. Thank you, if you have the opportunity to show speed in your work, I would be more than grateful. Greetings from the entire Setla studio in Serbia. We follow you closely!

I should say there are no miracles in terms of speeds, this setup allows to utilise large amount of space at the speed of a very fast SSD. When I’m doing terribly big sims it still takes its time to write the file. On average speeds are 450-600 with many files copying and up to 980 MB/s with single large files copying. This will most likely go a bit down with more and more people using the server simultaneously.

@@AndreyLebrov Thanks for your reply, We are currently users of a k-nap system with a 1 GB network system. That’s not enough for our business, but it’s definitely a good move. Your topic about the network shot me directly at the right time and gave me the idea to invest in some other solution. I agree that the main advantage of the NAS system is central storage and it incredibly improves workflow. What is really important to us is that when we work on large projects we want to have the feeling of downloading files from a computer. Lots of proxy files, big models on stage that have millions of polygons, all this directly slows down the work. I would like to know before I invest money that is not small, just as you mentioned when it is a test for graphics cards. I don't believe in anything until I try a realistic task. I'm sure other people want to know and see how gigabit files scattered in folders are loaded into our system as they work. Maybe I gave you an idea for a new topic. Thank you so much for everything you do for the Cgi community.
