Central Machinery 4"x36" Belt and Disk Sander Unboxing, Assembly, and Mod

Ғылым және технология

Hi all, we just purchased the Central Machinery 4"x36" belt sander and decided to make an unboxing, assembly, review, and mod video. After using the sander for a little bit, we noticed that a lot of sawdust was produced, making it very hard to use without goggles and a gas mask. To fix this, we 3D printed a small attachment that allows you to attach a ShopVac to the collector tubes. The ShopVac simply sucks up the sawdust as it is produced, making everything cleaner! The .STL files are downloadable for FREE from Thingiverse in the link included below. A complete parts list is also included below with links to purchase all of the items.
Update: As suggested by a viewer you may want to look into: "moving the motor slightly to prevent the sanding belt from slipping under load. Loosen the 4 bolts that attach the motor and slide the motor to tighten the drive belt. Drive belts on these sanders look to be of poor quality and I suspect that they vary quite a bit on their actual dimensions"

    Good video! However for ease of installing/use of fence, the 2 screws on the fence shown at 5:23 are going thru wrong side of fence. The 2 fingers of fence slip UNDER the plastic bottom guard, between guard and the belt. Screws go in from top thru plastic into fence. This allows fence to easily be removed/installed without removing the lower plastic guard when you want to use fence or not. UPDATE: Received my vacuum port adapter! Very cool. As I had already modified my sander for ability to run full vacuum (cut out restrictor on belt port and subsequently added spacers to cover to stop belt being sucked into cover ) I had planned on plugging the 2 holes on adapter. Didn't realize until received adapter there is also a restrictor on end that fits on vacuum, smaller id hole. Easy fix cutting out to allow full vacuum, though the infill (learned something today) kinda thru me- junction of ID web and body is webbed, wall thickness isn't solid.

    Lads - excellent thinking! I used your video along with a few others as I am setting up my own Central Machinery unit. But the best part is your creativity, ingenuity, and drive to invent, produce, and build the vacuum attachment. When I’m back at my desk I’m ordering one - I was pondering what I remember from college fluid dynamics... you solved it for many people. I think you fellows are awesome!!!

    Nice Vid Bro! I'd be careful though with using that bottom mounted dust port on the sander. I did a similar mod to mine. The shop vac was sucking the belt down as it was running, and ended up sanding a hole through the bottom metal plate. I'm working on a new version where I move the port to a more efficient location. I and can tag you in the vid if you like. Keep up the good work.

  • @BananaScience

    @BananaScience

    Yikes!!!!!!!!!! Sorry about that! :( Check the new updated version on Thingiverse were the belt sander intake hole is a little smaller to reduce suction. You could also try drilling a 5-10mm hole through both the vac attach and the part it connects to to let in more air.

    Nicely done young man!! You might add a note about moving the motor slightly to prevent the sanding belt from slipping under load. Loosen the 4 bolts that attach the motor and slide the motor to tighten the drive belt. Drive belts on these sanders look to be of poor quality and I suspect that they vary quite a bit on their actual dimensions.

I decided, no sense in fighting a bunch of re-habs & my labor 1st thing out of the box. Called the store, asked to bring it back & trade for a BAUER!! So glad I did! Pulled it out of the box, attached a few items & went to work with it! By the way,.....plenty of power.

    Great vid for setting up the sander. Thanks! But, ummm... instead of spending $25.00 ( inc. shipping) for your cool little shop vac adaptor, (and it is cool) I just used a pvc elbow, some old tubing and a drill, and in 5 minutes had the same thing. Fit right on my shop vac... Cost me zilch... Just sayin' :)

    My thoughts on vac sys for this sander..the sizes are very common-Leftover CPAP parts...PVC plumbing parts ... 100 sources of parts.IMHO.. a HD SHOP VAC is overkill.. I am going with a small vac and adding ports to lower suction or not. guess I need to make a YT vid.
