Jim Truman’s driver and race team gave him the ultimate send off. He would pass 11 days after this race. What a way to go out as an Indy 500 Champion Car Owner.

With that painful rain-delay and then having the race on a Saturday and then for it to be the first live TV broadcast, it created such a memorable event and the race itself was excellent. I thought Jim Lampley did a great job announcing it.

I went to several back to back races at Texas...one being the race that Graham won. The next year I saw Bobby near the garages and I told him "Tell your son not to raise his arm in victory until he crosses the finish line" Bobby broke out into a big grin, rolled his eyes and said, "Oh believe me, I mentioned that to him a few times"

Sam Posey didn't cost Kevin the win. Kevin's car had been loose throughout his run to the front and on the restart it bit him. As he accelerated through turn four the car slipped out into the grey and that cost him the traction he needed to stay ahead of Rahal. Just a bad break and a real shame.

Bobby Rahal was a popular driver he deserved to win but i really liked Kevin Cogan!

@racenutdon On the tires, yeah perhaps they were a bit of a factor. But in the post-race interview Kevin said he turned down the turbo boost for the last half of the race and "didn't dare touch it again" because he lost his earpiece which was critical for adjusting the boost. So when you consider Kevins boost was down & Rahal's was maximum, it makes Kevins double pass on Mears & Rahal even more amazing! Low boost however means lagging restarts though as well.

At 2:14 Kevin Cogan is restarting and you can see the dust as he takes a high line exiting turn#4. I wonder if dirty tires were a factor. I sat in the Paddock that year and watching someone who grew up in Illinois cross the yard of bricks first was pretty cool.

Cogan's career path and reputation among drivers would have changed drastically if he won this race.

Cogan was far more courteous to the nosy Posey than he might have been, considering that 4 years earlier, Posey said that it looked like Cogan had deliberately caused the opening lap crash.

Sam really shouldn’t have disturbed Kevin at such a critical time in the race. No way I would have done that.

It wasn't his idea. If you watch the race you can hear that he's surprised at being asked to call Kevin. In fact, just before he talks to Kevin, you can hear a voice say, "You can talk to Al Junior." Could that have been a TV director trying and failing to correct a miscommunication to Sam?
