"Censor" Apology for UKTV - Clip from "Monty Python - The Meaning of Live" documentary

The last night of the 2014 Monty Python reunion shows, “Monty Python Live (mostly) - One Down Five to Go”, was broadcast live, on television and in cinemas, around the world. The first part of the show included the “Navel Medley” song, which contained words not permitted on UK television before the 9pm “watershed”. Rather than allowing the broadcaster to censor the show, Eric Idle came up with the idea of filming “An Apology”, starring Michael Palin as Daphne Fielding, to be broadcast at the time the offending song came on.
This clip from “Monty Python - The Meaning of Live” shows the behind-the-scenes of filming this “Apology” and Eric and Michael explaining how it came about.
"Monty Python - The Meaning of Live” (available on iTunes) is a feature length documentary, directed by Roger Graef and James Rogan, which offers unprecedented access to the preparations and staging of the Monty Python 2014 reunion shows at The O2, London, and gives an insight into what made the Pythons a global phenomenon. The film includes all-new interviews with Mike, Terry, Terry, John and Eric.

shame Graham Chapman is no longer with us, could have his army officer barge in. "No, sorry, this apology is far too silly. Too many sensitive types. This is what should be shown instead."
"..and now for something i like, a picture of sheep!" this is the kind of sarcasm that makes the joke much more substantial and this is why i love Monty Python.
I can never get tired of Michael Palin casually dropping the C Bomb.
Brilliant how he last minute turns the last joke around. Making it much better.

One can't simply censor the Pythons. The'll get around it very quickly and cleverly.
hooray for the fucking internet!

+ben middleton Huzzah! Thank fuck we don't have to lipread what these cheeky cunts are saying!
I love that in 2:58 Eric is standing behind the Dark Side of the Moon album. Two of my favorite things in the world! Coincidence? I don't think so...
I'm glad you guys are still out there doing what you love!

Welp, I just heard Michael Palin say 'cunt'. I can die now.
I noted something wonderfully serendipitous in this video. At 2:58, Eric is standing in front of a plaque by/of/for Roger Waters, presumably the great genius behind Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd, along with Led Zeppelin, financed the making of Monty Python's epic film The Holy Grail.
I bet you they won't let this sketch on the telly...

Next time you go on about the "bloody censors" just remember, you're one of them!
It's so sad that after these guys have pushed boundaries for so long, that there are still boundaries that exist at all. When will the world just grow up and be adults.
Six people and no money is all you need for comedy gold.
You guys are brilliant, as usual! xD
I loved that clip. How to swear on "daytime" TV, without swearing.
If any troupe deserves not to age...
And the funniest line was "I don't think the Watershed applies to lip reading". You guys are just fucking brilliant.
Amazing these gents are still so funny after all these years
ARE WE BACK IN 1983?
Classic, just timelessly classic! lol Well done lads, well done!
Amazing how sometimes these restrictions can lead to more hilarious skits
I wish I had seen them live
Can you upload the full apology clip as shown on the night please? :)
I grew up in the 70's when Public Television a) was worth watching, and b) when Public Television stations played Python late at night. The Flying Circus helped twist me into quite an eccentric, and I would do it all over.
Happy Birthday Eric!
Now for something completely different
How cool you are! I adore you! 🇬🇧 From Russia with love ) 🇷🇺
well spotted Bruce
I bet you they won't play this song on the radio
From what I've heard, Eric Idle was notorious for corpsing during funny bits. I think Michael Palin, although he is a lovely and quite kind soul, was doing his very best to get Eric to audibly crack.
Why not replace the letter C with B? Then you can "almost" get away with saying, "What a silly bunt!"
They still got it. :) Funny stuff. :)
These guys are absolutely fucking brilliant
It's amazing that, after all these years, they STILL had to worry about fucking censorship. It's ridiculous. Reading Michael Palin's journals, the censorship in season 3 and 4 was so bad that the pythons almost did a bloody mutiny.

+floooooooooooooooood oh definitely.
Why do they bleep out rude words? To paraphrase a comedian I saw on TV many years ago, it just makes the audience say "He just said [BEEP]!"
damn legends
we live in a bleeping nanny state! bleeps!
Has censorship changed over the years?

If anything it has gotten worse. Luckily bypasses exist (and fans) so these great comedies to be bypassed.
Whats up with English and Drag?

Paul McCartney was criticized for saying "[It's a] drag, innit?" the day after John Lennon got killed. The cases may be unrelated.

But YOU just said it..! Have you no decency? Don't you know a lot of people are *embarassed* by such vulgar language?! I myself have progressed to the C level (good evening), but think of others not so fortunate, around whom you would certainly never catch ME saying anything like winkel or vibraphone... oh, whoops, damn!

O fucking hell that was funny
I've been trying to track down the 'Being Offensive' skit for a decade now, it's been removed everywhere. It ended with the Shooting a Poof skit. All gone. :( We literally live in a draconian era of Marxist fucking lunatics.
My brain hurts from all this bleeping, foul n vile language
I love these guys so much. If I were gay and attrackted by older men, I would want to make out with each one of them.

I cunt believe the genital song was censored.
