You can’t do Dropkick Murphys and not do Flogging Molly now. Both have heavy elements of Celtic folk music mixed with gritty in your face punk. Punk is definitely more about the message than the technique. Both punk and Celtic music have a major focus on storytelling and just mesh so well together.

I saw them live several years ago. They had acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, mandolin, bagpipes, flute, bass, and drums. The guitar players would switch to other string instruments several times in the middle of a song. They are amazing live. If they ever come through your area, absolutely go.

Came here looking for the Pogues recommendation. Great fun as a band, and I'd like to see a discussion of Shane and Kirsty's singing in Fairytale in particular. This channel's not very sweary though; might need to check the lyrics. The more recent version of the lyrics without the homophobic slur might be usable? Have to say The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is a cover version though. One of a number I think. The original is by Eric Bogle, an Australia-based Scot who does folk and a lot more. I love his live album I Wrote this Wee Song. When my kids were babies I needed something with a waltz rhythm that I could sing quietly from memory while tired and bobbing them round the kitchen in the middle of the night, so The Band... and also No Man's Land (a similar song in original artist, covers and subject, as well as musically) became go-to lullabies for us. Might explain something about the younger one's dark turn of mind...

i think like all art you have to take it in the context of it's time and PUNK wanting to shock you and provoke thought. like TSOL's Code Blue and The Forgotten Rebels 'f#ck me dead. Which both on the surface deal with nechromancy, but really are dealing with male dominence in the extreme to prevoke thought and conversation of how bad that is....

The Pogues are probably the Ur-example of Celtic punk, and are definitely worthy of an analysis; the problem is it's tough finding video of a 'clean' performance where Shane wasn't sloppy drunk (though maybe that's worthy of an analysis on its own). Yep, The Rumjacks style of writing, most notably the lyrics, was mostly done by Frankie McLaighlin, the Scottish born lead singer, who was a masterful poet and blended modern English with the some scot/Celt language and old world English of sorts. Gave it a real different flavour, it was magnificent. Sadly Frankie had his troubles and the band parted ways with him. They now have an American lead singer and the writing duties are spread around a bit more but the music is still fantastic and lyrics still tell great stories, but certainly has a different feel to it now. But certainly worth checking out!!

Wow! I never ever thought you would analyse my favourite punk band! Thank you Elizabeth! 😁 I've heard Dropkick Murphys describe themselves as vocally challenged, but that wouldn't be punk rock right? But...... It would be amazing if you could get Al Barr for a Tea Time interview (although Ken Casey sang this Christmas song). Al suffered an 'arterial venus malformation'. This resulted in one paralysed vocal fold and I believe he struggles with oxygen flow to the brain while singing. I'd love to hear you discuss this with Al or better still, Al and Ken as they have two vocalists and find out how he manages to perform so often and consistently. Thanks again Elizabeth, you made my day with this one!

The video of this song from the fundraiser for John Mann was lovely! I'm not sure if it lends itself to analysis, though. On the one hand you get a bunch of different vocalists with unique accents/styles in close up camera shots, but on the other hand most of the song is chorus and instrumental parts and it the camera cuts out quite a bit on the solo parts.

There is something in celtic punk that every holiday whisky raiser cherishes and has deep rabbit hole to dive deep into. After going through greatest from Dropkicks, natural (taxi)route is on Flogging Molly, who have eternal pieces like If I Ever Leave This World Alive and Float, plus mandatory Drunken Lullabies.

As a Scotian you and a Murphy's fan you must be a Trews fan as well, eh? I'm out in Vancouver at the other end of the country but have been listening to the Trews over a decade at this point and was supposed to see them live a couple times but stuff kept getting in the way. Also love April Wine who I believe are out of Halifax, but they're a very different band lol

I was so surprised and excited to see this on my timeline! Dropkick has been my favorite band for years. Their style is so unique and fun. They also do quite a bit of philanthropy work in the Boston area. Funnily enough the lead singer & songwriter Ken Casey has been sober for many years. There’s not a whole lot to analyze vocally but I’d love to see more of them from you!

Seen them live together with Floggin Molly, and I've been to a lot of shows and concerts, but nothing quite like these guys. They can bring so much cheer, chaos and brotherhood to a show. If you ever have the chance, even if it's not your kind of music, I highly encourage you to see them live. My sister doesn't listen to this kind of music at all and she went with me because she was close by back then and she enjoyed every second of it. Just make sure to anticipate a lot of local beer pouring from the sky.

Bad Religion, another great punk band, has an album of classic Christmas Songs, called Christmas Songs, I think. The whole album is a banger. Oi To The World by The Vandals, and Father Christmas by The Kinks are two classic punk Christmas originals. (My favorite is This Christmas (I’ll Burn It To The Ground), by Set It Off.) I’d love to see you do more punk rock in the future!
