He didn't really slip through the system. They were well aware of him apparently, & his gun collection. Purchased the weapon legally at age 19. A common excuse by authorities goes along the lines of "if we investigated every potential psycho we'd be so overstretched we couldn't do anything else". Point is, you can't stop these things sadly.

I think the problem is that no one truly wanted to mentor him or cared about him so he was lost. The only person who cared about him was his mother and she died. I'm not painting him as a victim but my point is that your viewpoint is wrong. You are seeing these people as nonhuman ticking time bombs who should only be stopped because they would endanger other people. Many times people like you would only interfere when you are afraid people like him would endanger society. Otherwise on a day to day basis, you don't care and you just let him be. Or you do "little acts of kindness" like letting him sit at your table and acting like you are doing him a favor then ignoring him when he tries to talk.

In Florida the death penalty has to be decided unanimously by the jury. In this case 3 of the 12 jurors voted against the death penalty. So he got life in prison without parole. I read those who voted against it had worries and doubts about his mental capacities. I think he should've gotten the death penalty because that's what the families wanted. But hey! That's just how the system works. Spending life in prison is pretty miserable anyway.

@@Dim.inished I didn't think somebody would justify his reasons but here's to refute on that. You can NOT give a reason for murder. If you feel like life is hard on you, and the people around you is to blame, then simply bring those injustice to light. You can't put out a fire with fire, instead it'd make it worse. Here's the perfect example to that, Nick here has been arrested for his actions while his younger brother is the one to have been scorned by society since. The family who suffered losses could still be feeling empty till this day. Besides, he's always had anger management issues and some other mental health problems. He was transferred from one school to another 6 times- if I'm not mistaken- due to some disciplinary issues. He was said to have frequently threatened the people around him, which in this case, the students of the school he used to go to. Of course, I don't have anything against "problematic" students. No students are problematic. It's just that sometimes in life you're lucky if you meet people who can truly guide you and there are those who aren't as lucky. I'm saying he has to take responsibilities on his actions, as he should have expected to happen since before he went shooting. This should set a proper example so as to ensure there won't be any similar incidents in the future.

His home life was poor, his treatment by peers was poor and he clearly has mental issues and just like most men - none of these issues were ever addressed in his life. He most likely believed he had no where to go, no one cared, so he was going to make them care he never got the attention he believed he was due so he was going to 'make them fear his power'.
