Celestion Cream 90 Watt Alnicos In My 1979 180-Watt Fender Super Twin Reverb... At Last!

Музыка

Finally got around to fitting the Celestion Cream Alnico speakers in my 1979 (bought new) 180-watt Fender Super Twin Reverb - I was never really happy with the Classic Lead 80s I swapped for the stock speakers way back when. Early days, but it's never sounded better! The superb G&L S.500 guitar is used on the neck pickup.

The A/B test at the end was well done. Listening on my phone the Creams sounded much better. Less honky or nasally.

Thanks and I agree, I'm glad I didn't sell before fitting. I will now sell the Classic Leads. The Creams performed well on a gig - not run-in yet, though.

Nice amp - owning two 70ies Silverface myself, I can just recommend to experiment with the preamp tubes, too, if you have a little collection at hand: preamp tubes affect the sound in a simmilar way that speakers do. PS: TAD has GE 6AC10, offered as replacement for 6C10, still in stock.

Thanks for the tips! 'The 6AC10 provides a smoother tone than the obsolete 6C10 with a bit less gain but more relaxed response.' Looks like it's worth a try at £25. I don't need the gain, so!

Never bring a new horse to war 😉 These will probably get better with wear, but they sound nice already.

The alinco sounds more defined. It's hard to tell the true nature at low volumes. I keep swapping between a greenback and a blue on my amp. I've been thinking of trying a cream with the hope that it falls somewhere in the middle.

Yes, the Creams are more defined and expansive. These days they will only ever be used at low volumes. The amp is 180 Watts when 20 would probably do me, I've had it since new in 1979 and figure I may as well stick with it until I can no longer lift it! I will sell the Classic 80s.

AlNiCo magnets compress different from the Ceramic, and you have to decide which tone is best for you. I find that at the low volume here in town AlNiCo makes me happier when I play them. I have to get back out to the farm and do a shoot out, EVMs versus the Axioms and the Blackbirds, maybe find some new Creams- I think that I gave away the pair that I had to someone who had a want for them, but it was a while back. 🤔

I didn’t see this video when searching a few months ago when I was pulling the trigger on a super twin reverb from guitar center website.. EVs! What a monster ☺️ I have a red knob twin and was wondering what creambacks would be like.. with it’s channel two thing .. anyhow! Super job ☺️

Thanks for your comment. My Super Twin didn't have EVs but souped up Fender Special Design and they were not very nice sounding.

Alnicos never sound like an alnico should until about 100 hours of playtime.

The Alnicos sound more "in your face"....the sound has a "Live" quality to it. The 80's sounded more like the sound was coming from a stereo/radio. I think the Alnicos win here. - I wonder how the Alnicos would sound in various High-Gain amps like a 5150/6505. I've tried a CL80 in the 6505 Combo amp and it sounded amazing (but I don't own the amp any more). I wonder how the Alnico might sound in my Marshall DSL40CR. ⚡🎸⚡

Got a Jensen blue alnico speaker with similar bell housings in my tweed deluxe, much nicer than the usual found in the deluxe. I don't think it is necessary to have speakers with a higher wattage rating than the amp. Beginning of the riff sounded like City of tiny lights - FZ
