The Negro Leagues were inferior competition. It works both ways, great hitters means inferior pitchers. Jackie Robinson hit .375 in his rookie Negro League season. He moved on to MLB and hit an excellent.297. That's a 78 point drop. Hank Aaron hit .366 in his rookie Negro League season and then hit .280 in his MLB rookie year. That's a 86 point drop. Larry Doby played a few Negro league season (officially 5). In 1947 he played in both leagues. He hit .354 in the Negro Leagues and .156 in MLB. A 198 point drop. He is a career .340 hitter in Negro League baseball yet only a .283 career hitter in MLB. Roy Campanella was an eight year Negro league veteran who hit .369 his last year there but only hit .258 his first year in Brooklyn. Another 111 point drop. Citing Negro League stats where Josh Gibson hit .466 is ridiculous. It was triple A at best.

inferior competition? Negro Leagues were given inferior everything - by design. These athletes didn't have the same before, during or after 'work' challenges. Did not have the same access to training, ongoing funding, sponsorship or support. How well do you perform at work with death threats? degradation? would you beat your opponent in a race if you knew it could mean your life afterwards? yes, they played the same game, but they were different players. the stats were buried, their talents dismissed - all to keep white audiences comfortable in a system of oppression. you're talking leagues, i'm talking about life. enjoy the game tonight!

The season lengths were different and sample sizes were larger in the MLB. You’re also discrediting the years mlb pitchers didn’t have to face those guys you mentioned or even compete for spots on a roster vs them. Babe Ruth didn’t have to face satchel page and that’s the MLB’s fault for racists policies not the NLB’s fault…

@@Kyle36147 I get that small sample sizes are tough to gauge, which is why NLB averages shouldn’t be considered in the official stats. Cobb hit .366/7 in over 11,000 ABs while Josh Gibson hit .372 in 2200 ABs. By the way Josh was officially at .361 but somehow found enough hits to make him the all time leader. 🤔 Also Ruth and others did play negro leaguers in barnstorming tours all the time. He was more dominant against them than MLBers.
