    I'd say that the main weakness of Boonweaver Karador is that it folds to graveyard hate pretty hard, and it can't fight over the stack at all - you can make it harder for opponents to cast spells, but once they're on the stack you can't stop them resolving.

  • @djmoneghan

    @djmoneghan

    7 жыл бұрын

    I actually disagree with the graveyard hate point. Single time effects like Tormod's Crypt of Relic of Progenitus are extremely easy to play around, and almost do nothing to hinder my progress. I'm going to be able to present circumstances in which you have to use them at inopportune moments, meaning they slow at the absolute best. Rest in Peace is the only really painful card for me to see, since it exiles everything currently in, and exiles everything else that will be put in. Even something like Leyline of Void isn't a big deal, as I can play around it beyond trivially. Grafdigger's Cage is the other big one, but that is more difficult due to relying on cards like Green Sun's Zenith or Yisan, the Wanderer Bard to be able to answer permanents like it. Stack interaction is a big weakness, but I see that more as an extension of being only able to present a boardstate that makes their lives difficult. It would be awesome to have our own Pact of Negation, but our hatebears do a fine enough job most games.

    Karador will always be my favourite EDH deck :-) I have been running him since I started playing MTG and found that EDH was what I enjoyed (although I tend to favour 1v1 with the normal ban format which is something provided at my store). This deck has evolved over the past few years with me as a player from me wanting to build BWG and pulling out everything I had in my slim binder to learning how to stream-line and build more competitively, especially when I learned of cobblepott's Boonweaver Combo. I am growing so much in my ability to play MTG, largely in part to the Reddit cEDH community... thank you so much for all your help and advice with me as I learn and your patience and kind, constructive criticism. - reddit.com/user/Nicolethebomb/

    Have you considered switching to thrasios and tymna? It seems like it might be just as good as Karador for long Grindy games and much more castable. Thrasios also gives access to blue for the ability to fight over the stack.

    i've been running karador for a while now and have just added protean hulk as another combo engine. Now ive been thinking about going four colour and going all out flash hulk instead my meta is incredibly competitive (its beautiful) but im not sure if splashing another grand or so on the deck will improve its performance dramitically. Especailly with all the non-basic land hate and overall stax in my meta, right now my deck works as its ok at grinding out into a long game but what do you guys think?

  • @djmoneghan

    It does. I've entirely abandoned both Karador and Abzan in favor of the list below. It's *dramatically* better across all axes. tappedout.net/mtg-decks/thrasios-hulkweaver/

  • @djmoneghan

    Yeah basically. In this list, anyway. There are multiple different Hulk decks in these colors, this is just the one that evolved from Boonweaver (maintaining the midrangey hatebears plan).

  • @Winterhe4rt

    Is Boonweaver actually still the best way for karador with Hulk being available? I really love Karador I wonder whats the best route for now as a 75-90% competetive list (as Kara is certainly outclassed by 4c Flash Hulk right?) Anyway awesome video and eplanation. Wish I had that when I starte edh couple years ago haha

  • @LaboratoryManiacs

    @LaboratoryManiacs

    Boonweaver is definitely no longer the best route. Boonweaver was actually modeled as lesser version of Protean Hulk. This video was created before Protean Hulk was unbanned. Additionally Karador has mostly fallen by the wayside to partners.

    What are your opinions on a bazaar of baghdad in karador?

  • @djmoneghan

    @djmoneghan

    7 жыл бұрын

    I don't like it. While it definitely solves a partial issue the deck had, in raw card advantage, I think it solves it far worse than the current solution. That current solution being Tymna. Given that Karador never did a lot for us, Tymna replacing him and fixing one of the decks main issues, there's no reason to go to (honestly kind of unimpressive) solutions like Bazaar. In a more reanimator focused build, it might have a place, but I don't think this deck wants to do that (anymore).

    When talking Sideboards: Stony Silence & Bane of Progress makes Breya players cry. Also, no mention of the creature tutor all-star: Survival of the Fittest. Is Enlightened Tutor worth running in your opinion?

  • @djmoneghan

    @djmoneghan

    7 жыл бұрын

    If you mean meta specific hate, I absolutely agree, since sideboards aren't legal in EDH. Obviously Survival is a fantastic card, but honestly it's not the all-star creature tutor in my deck anymore, I'd give that honor to Yisan. Enlightened Tutor definitely is worth it in my opinion, there are so many powerful targets for it, from either half of your combo in Altar of Dementia or Pattern of Rebirth, to mana in Mana Crypt, to value engines in Birthing Pod or Sylvan Library.

    It is one of the most versatile spells in the deck. It can grab several different types of cards from the deck. As needed it can get you mana acceleration (Dryad Arbor, Deathrite Shaman, Birds of Paradise), creature tutors (Fauna Shaman, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard), artifact and enchantment removal (Caustic Catterpillar, Qasali Pridemage, Reclamation Sage), Hatebears (Gaddock Teeg), graveyard removal (scavenging ooze), and recurssion (Eternal Witness, Renegade Rallier, Saffi Eriksdotter.)

    We do not currently have a player running Grenzo and we like to have some expertise in the deck before doing a deck tech. It may get on the list if we can get it to a competitive state and have a player running it.

    Hey, i have been lurking around competitive edh reddit for a while and find it awesome to see all these decks. I myself play roon and azami, both arent competitive, azami possibly if i upgrade but roon from what i read is just not a competitive general which is fine since i play in a casual playgroup. Could you however make a Roon list with a price of around 500-800 euro that isnt stax or infinite combo? Would really appreciate it! I just cant find a good roon list online that isnt stax or infinite combo and i have a hard time making a good one myself, i am rarely satisfied with it. Dont want to ask competitive edh reddit since roon isnt competitive and i dont want to spend 2000-3000 euro :). Our playgroup consists of oona,ezuri,zegana,crovax,niv mizzet. No one plays infinite combos :)

    Hi Ranger, I just put this question to the group and it is a difficult one. I'll have to get back to you when we get something definitive. There are difficulties with having a non-infinite and non-stax requirement for a competitive EDH game. Most of the time you are either rushing to victory or actively working to make the game difficult for everyone else i.e. Stax. You've posed a tough question that doesn't quite work with the format. We'll have to see if we can do something that is really pushing to be cEDH under those restrictions. Like I said before we will get back to you when we have something.

    Hi, thanks alot of answering!! I didnt expect too much but wow thanks for considering it, i hope im not too late with saying this but i changed my mind and going infinite is fine (if someone has a good non infinite/stax roon deck already build in meantime i would still definently be interested :)!). Ill just exclude some cards if i play with my friends and play infinite if i play at our local LCG (more competitive). I still have a hard time making a casual Roon deck since it always seem so slow to me and hard to win without craterhoof. Is Infinite roon a decent t2 deck? If the budget 500-800 is too low, then im also ok with 500-1000. Again, thanks alot and keep up the awesome videos!

  • @djmoneghan

    @djmoneghan

    7 жыл бұрын

    Awesome. Artificial limitations like not going infinite make it pretty exclusively non-competitive. If you're ok seeing something like that, while we obviously can't make any promises, we can definitely look into. I'm about to hit the brewery and get to work thinking about Roon in a competitive setting. There isn't currently any Roon builds that are considered competitive, as most Bant decks are just going to be better under Derevi, and even she has fallen out of favor. In terms of budgets, the most competitive Roon list will still like max out at over $2500, but obviously just cutting some budget from the manabase will drop that price by upwards of $1000. If you give me somewhere to send it, I can always message you whatever Roon list I do come up with, even if it doesn't turn out to be something viable enough to play on camera!

  • @rangergelder3547

    @rangergelder3547

    Hey, thanks for the help! Yes i realised it would be too hard to make a deck decently competitive without stax or infinite combos. i know Derevi is better or brago stax but i like Roon since it was my first deck and if im going to make a T1 deck or close to it i will upgrade my azami for it. i just love Roon alot and could not get a good decklist myself or find one that wasnt stax and would like it more to have a pretty strong Roon list than an azami list :)! My roon list atm is something like 400-500 euros i think but im fine with going to 1000. tappedout.net/mtg-decks/roon-test-2-1/ this is my brew but im pretty sure it isnt optimised at all or good lol. you can send ur list to heinenoord15@hotmail.com :)

    Man thats a cool combo..... once lol why do people always go straight to playing commander as if it were legacy.... do you but i like winning early in a four man game where i didnt fetch anything my deck just performed correctly without tutors in the way......sure playing 30 cards that can be any card is cool and all but is it really fun when you could just llay legacy or modern and get the same effect

    You may want to have a talk with your play groups about this. If you want to go to a competitive level let people know and then everyone can work towards it. The thought is that if everyone is going for the win no one can really get salty when someone plays a 'mean' deck. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

    If you rarely or never get the mana needed to cast Karador and pretty much never use Karador, why not use Anafenza, the foremost as your general instead? She's a cheap beater while you try to assemble the combo and she also serves as partial hate for opponents who might also be using a reanimation strategy.

  • @djmoneghan

    @djmoneghan

    7 жыл бұрын

    Anafenza is probably decent in some metas, like if the majority of your opponents are on similar strategies, but overall, Karador is far better. The reason being that, as neither is our primary goal, we want to be able to extract a lot of backup value from our commander since we always have access to them. Anafenza is a decent hatebear, of which our deck is already flush. She doesn't do anything else, though. Karador represents all of our past creatures (barring exile effects), so he is functionally a hatebear, while also functionally being ramp, removal, and combo pieces. Our primary goal of dropping hatebears and slow things down is already so good that we don't need Anafenza during the times when we would want Anafenza. She's very low impact compared to most of our other three drops, and is a narrow hoser. If her ability were more akin to Aven Mindcensor, then I think we could have a meaningful discussion about if she should replace Karador, but as is, the recursive potential of Karador is much stronger at the times when we want to be switching to our backup plan.

    Blah blah blah infinite combos.... My Karador wins most games good old smash your face in. The utility is off the charts. I can remove anything on the table, reoccuring. The defense is extremely good. Also using sacrifice triggered token production makes blockers while I stack up my graveyard then Pathbreaker Ibex or Craterhoof behemoth, even Eldrazi monument has worked extremely well in it. The *BANE* of this deck is Bojuka bog. Artifacts and creatures that exile graveyards aren't as bad, I have been able to stop them. But a bojuka bog, relic of progenitus, tormod's crypt or angel of finality don't come up that often. If I cannot stop the artifacts with a krosan grip or creature ability, good old Elixir of immortality keeps me from losing my graveyard even if it slows me down. Structure Karador properly and he's definitely the chieftain of EDH. I was thinking of making Muldrotha but I actually like Karadors mana reduction cost SO MUCH. I had him at 16 CMC amd still played him for 3 then smashed their faces in.
