    Thanks, Therese! This is the best training video I've watched on the parallel parking skill. The tip about waiting for the front cone to disappear from the service door before making the final turn is crucial...something my instructor did not show me. This gives me greater confidence that I'll nail this skill on Monday. ☺ BTW, I've watched a ton of your training videos and they have all been extremely helpful!

    @@SchoolBusSassIt's certainly good to know how to back up..on our training runs we were taught how to back up in cul-de-sac and 90° back ups. I'm not too happy on my middle school and Elementary routes have at least three 90° backups to do as a new driver, also the fact that my bus was older and had a shifter on the column.. takes getting used to after using the other type. Actually,we're one of the bigger districts in the country.We have 500 drivers here in Chesterfield,Virginia.. I think your numerous instructional videos were among the best I've seen on the internet. Happy New Year!

    How wonderful you have a full time route… the turn arounds will get easier over time, but I understand how you feel, as a new driver. Just remember to take your time on every turn around. I am not a fan of steering wheel shifters either, but, it is likely you will find a variety of busses within your districts fleet. We have about six different styles of busses, each with different setups. Happy New Year to you and your family… Continued success, in all you do. Enjoy the journey…it’s a great one!

    @@SchoolBusSass Thank you Mrs Mileti. I've driven mini buses, class C CDL, for 10 years out of Richmond, VA.School bus work is certainly more intense.I was going to stay part time with the other job( weekends and summer)but need to focus on this and at age 68, probably not sure what I'm getting myself into. I really don't like being on some of the narrow roads we have with trenches 2 feet deep. We have several types including Transit flat nose with engine up front.Fortunately, I didn't get one of those. We have some C2's that even have air conditioning and a button to release the air pressure.We use a tablet up front to check in the children and check them out again.. they're pretty much know how to manipulate it. The elementary use a scan card when they come on the bus and off. We start back on the 8th and I have one more day with my mentor.She was fairly harsh with some of the middle schoolers. I'm going to try to get off to a good start and pick my battles. I need to find the video you guys did about rewards for the students and incentives. Regards Art Chester,VA

  • @SchoolBusSass

    @SchoolBusSass

    5 жыл бұрын

    What type of equipment are you using for your maneuverability? When you are first learning the maneuver, try tipping the top right mirror down, so you can see your dual. Once you learn the pivot points, it will all fall into place. I have always used the rear dual for my starting point and first pivot point.. Where the wheel of the bus hits the pavement, there is a slight bulge on the pavement, when you see your rear dual lined up with that front left cone, that is the first pivot point. Try adjusting the mirror first, to see if that will help.

    All your school bus videos can pretty much apply the exact same for regular buses right? I am planning on becoming a bus driver soon. I will get my class b license soon then hopefully join SFMTA or AC Transit in the Bay Area and do my 9 week training then hopefully pass the driver test. I'm wondering how easy or hard is it to learn routes? Do you know if regular buses have built in things that show the routes, kinda like Google Maps? Or would we need to memorize the routes?

  • @SchoolBusSass

    @SchoolBusSass

    Жыл бұрын

    Many of them should work. There may be some exceptions. Please check with your local test site for specific requirements on the pretrip inspection. Maneuvers will likely be very similar. Do you know what type of bus you will be testing on? A transit style or conventional? Most RTA busses are transit style. I have videos with. Oth styles. If you are testing on a public transportation bus (not a school bus) you will need a passenger endorsement it. Or a school bus endorsement, unless you will be testing on a school bus. If you will be taking your road test on a school bus, you will need to do a student crossover discharge, with crossover speech. Our district does not have on board gps mapping systems, but there may be some districts that do have that feature. Our drivers are given a route sheet with via directions and stop locations and rider’s information. Most new drivers find it somewhat challenging initially, but the process gets much easier over time. It takes me about three days to learn a new route, without referencing the route sheet. It helps tremendously if you are familiar with the areas you will be driving in. It also helps if you can review the route sheet before you drive the route, so you will have an idea where you’re going.

    Not terrifying...it's usually pretty fun. I love when a driver says... "I can't even parallel park my car, I sure as heck can't parallel park a school bus." Then, after I teach them the formula and they practice it a time or two, they are parallel parking a school bus, like they have done it their whole life. I love, love, love when someone who believes they can't, discovers they can! What a thrill!

  • @SchoolBusSass

    @SchoolBusSass

    5 жыл бұрын

    I would, if this were a drivers side parking maneuver. This is a blind side/door side parallel maneuver. The title said drivers view because it is shown from both the drivers vantage point as well as an overview. The parking box and all of the cones are to the right of the drivers door. The hard left would be made when pulling the front of the bus into the space to complete the maneuver.

    Learning the pivot points of the vehicle. It’s a very valuable skill to learn if you’re driving in a larger city. There may not be a parking garage or many options for parking. Of the skills I’ve learned since becoming a school bus driver, parallel parking is the skill I’ve used over the years. The format in the video is a great training tool .

    @@SchoolBusSass thank you but do we really have to inspect the bus every morning like a mechanic that’s crazy I’m new and I start class soon any advice on how to pass I’m really scared and no one understands they think it’s so easy I’m 40 never even drove a truck before I needed a career after staying home with 7 kids so I chose this because well they hired me and paid training but I’m scared of the whole process

    @@CasFN , Here's then good news, when you do your pre-trip each day, you will not be verbalizing the process, only looking. Once you take all the words away, it cuts the pre-trip time in half.

    @@CasFN probably because he is not actually driving one. In all honesty, parallel parking a school bus, is much easier than parallel parking your own personal vehicle...unless equipped with park assist...that's not a fair comparison. Anyway, if you follow the steps in the video, I believe you will find you will pick up parallel parking in no time...and...might even enjoy learning it. School bus driving has been the most fun and by far, my all time favorite job. I love what I do and I hope you have a similar experience. Enjoy the journey.

    Learning what each parts function is and where it’s located, makes the driver aware of how the bus should be functioning, and recognize when something isn’t right, or safe to pick up/drop off children. I might know the name all of the parts, where they are located and what their functions are, but I have no clue how to fix them if they are malfunctioning or broken.

  • @SchoolBusSass

    @SchoolBusSass

    The district can fire you. Your actual CDL license should be ok, unless additional charges were added on to the accident, like OVI. Then, the state will suspend or revoke your CDL.

    Therese Mileti well that did technically happen on my 4th day on the route bus after a tail swing accident but after talking with the union i was able to keep my job (good news). (bad news) im no longer a driver but an attendant instead and after 1 year since then i went to ask about driving again and i was clearly told this: "transportation is not the right job for you, the district has concerns about you." so i asked "well about van driving or driving any of the company vehicles?" and yet i was told again that "this isnt the right job for you". so theres no point of me trying to prove to them what i have learned and to also prove to them as to why i should be trusted to drive a bus again. so my best bet is find another district or find any other commercial transportation jobs that has nothing to do with schoolbuses. the districts only suggestion was for me to apply for other non transportation positions in the district but once ive checked them out, i have realized that they pay less, even in office positions.
