Thanks for this, I ordered an X32 Compact mixer and found out annoyingly that it doesn't use xlr combo ports,, so I bought a few of these mini jacks to dual xlr adapters to connect my laptops to going into the xlr inputs at the back. I never thought about this problem so I'm glad I saw this video before using them. The compact does have 6 1/4" aux inputs I can use instead.

I've seen multiple iPhones (thankfully not mine) damaged this way. And to be clear, TRS will do just as much damage as XLR on a mixer like the Mackie DL16. They (Mackie & others) really should warn us about these things! Thanks for putting this info out there.

@@AudioUniversity TRS and XLR are basically the same thing. They are both 3 conductor connectors. As long as the pin assignment is the same for both xlr and trs, it makes no difference which one you use. You can even have trs on one end of a cable, and xlr on the other end. That said, phantom power isn't the only thing you have to worry about with this type of cable. You also need to know if the 2 components you are connecting, are running in balanced or single ended operation. Balanced has 2 signal (+) and one ground (-), where unbalanced is just one signal and one ground. The cable you show in the video is used to carry an unbalanced stereo signal. If the component that has the xlr connections is running in balanced operation, you'll have problems. It creates a short circuit. Depending on your equipment, you may be able to get away with a TRRS cable, but the best solution (in my opinion), is to just use a DI box. That's what they're made to do. If you're not exactly sure what DI box to get, a good music store should be able to recommend something that will work with your setup.

This can still be a worry if you use line inputs. My SSL Six console can supply phantom power through the line inputs as well, but thankfully has a switch for each individual channel. Nice video!

Thanks for this, good advice. However, I am looking to connect a Sony Walkman NW-A306 music player to a pair of Edifier S3000 Pro active speakers via the XLR connections, to take full advantage of high res music. I already have my turntable with built in phono stage connected to the line in connection. I assume the dangers highlighted in the video won't apply in my situation as the only power is into the speakers, they don't output anything. Any comments to help will be greatly appreciated!

hello, I generally plug my laptop mini jack (macbook pro) exit to a minijack to double jack stereo to my mixer and from there to my amp and speakers (just as you did with the phone) Is this the best way to get the sound? Is there any way to get better sound from the mac than the mini jack (like a usb sound card? Ive used soundcards before but just for imput sound for recording, not for output (soundcard have a stereo jack out, will this sound beterr than the minijack out on the mac? Also when I plug the mac to the mixer with each jack (L&R) on each channel, should I let the pan in the middle or move each to a side? Thanks!

I think this happened to me with a wireless audio transmitter/ receiver combo...I had the receiver connected to my camcorder via 3.5mm to xlr , it was on mic with 48v and now the wireless system does not work.

Very wise and with some microphones also capable of being destroyed by phantom power.

I always run a radial pro D2 between my phone and the mixing board.

I tried fixing inside of laptop, but no go. Couldn't figure out a way to get two outputs(left/right) out of phone. I'm sure it's something stupid that I'm missing. Thanks and have a good one!

You can do this - just be sure that phantom power (+48V) is disabled.

Really good advice and I don't want to nitpick, but I think in the video the second cable is shown being plugged in to the 1/4 inch mic inputs rather than the line inputs (which are closer to the main fader).Slightly undermines the very valid underlying point of the video which is "headphone output on phones is not really suitable to connect to mic inputs on mixers. The headphone levels are much closer to line level so use these inputs and avoid the complication of having to worry about phantom power"

As a professional engineer I have probably been more reckless with this than I should be. I have used a cable like this on the FOH console Omni input. Usually I only have phantom on the channels I need to up front but could see someone making a mistake and regretting I did it. Has never happened to me yet, but there's always a first time.

What about if i need to connect my laptop to my sound mixer in an XLR input ? What is the best solution, a USB to XLR cable ?? I want to hear music from laptop and i don't have jack inputs available in my mixer(xAir18)

I made a major mistake.. Bought a linear Por from Lehmann that only has two XLR inputs. My Avr Yamaha 685 got no xlr outputs.. Now I am wating on the yamaha and Hifi shop to reply to my email what I should buy to connect these two.. Or ship the lehman Amp back. Would love to hear your 2 cents if u will.

Most speakers don’t supply phantom power through their input, so this usually isn’t a concern in that case.

Rather than buying another adapter, I’d just recommend making sure phantom power is turned off.

You can use one of these adapters to connect the headphone plug from the Logitech H150 to the "Monitor" output of the Soundcraft Notepad 5: amzn.to/36AUpKh You might be able to use the same adapter to connect the microphone to the 1/4" input 1 of the Soundcraft. I have the 2nd mixer you displayed, I have the cord you suggested instead of xlr im connecting to my phone and the sound is very low im attempting to record video while playing music and using microphone all at one time mic works fine but the music i have playing is very very low what should i do thanks

Try boosting the output volume of your phone. If that isn't loud enough, use the "Gain" knob on the channel strip.

Maybe it's ok if you're on a digital mixer where phantom power switch is set individually per channel instead of distributing it on everything with a single switch.

How about the other way around - XLR microphone _to_ 3.5mm on a streaming PC just for my voiced audio?

There are adapters for that, but I believe they vary depending on the device you’re going into (laptop, DSLR camera, etc). In any case, the danger I’m describing in this video only applies to inputs with phantom power.

Is that safe if we put the XLR to 3.5 mm audio cable for professional power amplifers, e.g Behringer iNuke, Behrinher EUROPOWER or Carvin DCM 2000.

Phantom power won’t be an issue, but you will hear pops through the speakers when you connect and disconnect your device, which could be a problem. It’s best to have a way to mute the signal when connecting and disconnecting.

Yes. That should work.

I would love a video about XLR splitters cause there are lot of technicalities (48v, impedence) and possibilities (cable, BOX with transformer, etc) with various price (10$ for cable, up to 300 for a single two channel split box), and having a big a theory behing all that would be nice. For eg, can I use a XLR splitter on my focusrite to have signal from one mic to two channels without quality loss ? what about volume loss ? etc... :P

Bro how far can balanced cables travel?? My amplifier and stage monitor speakers are around 60 meters.

A balanced connection can be run far beyond 60 meters! Just make sure to use a truly balanced connection. The adapters in this video don't support a balanced connection. Most often, the line input does not have phantom power applied to it. So to be sure, I’d recommend the stereo line input on your mixer if it has one.

Hi mate, I've got an M Audio BX8 D3 monitor. Don't have any mixer or audio interface so I was just trying to play music from my phone through a 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm jack cable. The problem is that when the 6.35 side is fully plugged into the monitor it plays music with weird sounds and no bass but if it's half plugged it plays fine. Do you know what should I do? As I don't want to ruin the monitor over time. Thank you.

Using a DI Box, passive or active. passive one doesn't require phantom/battery power and should be worked well with keyboards, laptops or any unbalanced audio out an active DI boxes requires phantom/battery powered and usually used for instruments with pickups or any unbalanced devices also works too

For a show we had aux connected to an RCA-XLR adapter for PC track audio. The laptop was fine but when I plugged my phone in it made the phone crash multiple times. Plugging the RCA plugs directly into an RCA input on the mixer didn't make the phone crash so I believe phantom power was on for the two particular XLR inputs, which would make sense why my phone was crashing. The mixer was a Behringer x32

Its not the phantom power. You were plugging an unbalanced component into a balanced component. Doing that creates a short circuit. Next time, try an trrs cable, or just a DI box.

@@AmSleepyJay That was your problem. Phantom power is made specifically for mics, just like a phono preamp is made just for a turntable. 2 things happened when you turned phantom power on. The signal from your phone is line level and doesn't need the extra power. It was overloading the system. Also, when you turned the phantom power on, you forced that input to run in balanced operation. Your phone isn't balanced, and you can't mix balanced and unbalanced devices. It has to be one or the other, because the 2 modes are not electrically compatible. In the future, phantom power is only for mics. You can, however, connect your phone, or any other single ended line level device, to a balanced input (xlr or trs) if you use a direct, or DI box. Your phone wound first go into the DI box. The DI box would then convert the signal to balanced, making it safe to plug in to a balanced input.

Anytime you supply phantom power to a 3.5mm output, there is a chance for this trouble.

My volumes are always turned completely down or off when plugging / unplugging cables or adapters...You say so im this vid.that if your volumes are turned down...you should be okay. My phone volume is turned completely.down as well. Thanks for the vid.

And also except on modern digital mixing consoles Xlr input is made for microphone signal and not line signal which could damage the preamp and sound odd. Line signals are way too loud for microphone preamps

Unfortunately the rode caster pro only allows ducking on the 4 main xlr channels. So i need to run the 3.5 to xlr. That way i can run audio out from a devise into the microphone input. Unless they add the feature of ducking on all audio inputs, in a firmware update

Question, if you used a 3.5 mm-to-XLR adapter and connected a dynamic microphone -- like the Shure SM57 for example -- and didn't activate any phantom power, would there still be a danger? Or would the combination of a handheld dynamic microphone and the cellphone be okay?

The danger is only present when phantom power is turned on. However, the adapter in this video wouldn’t work for connecting a microphone to a phone.

You can use a regular XLR cable. Most modern ribbon microphones will not be harmed by phantom power. However, I don't recommend applying phantom power to a ribbon mic.

In both cases, the signal to noise ratio is equal. I think you’re referring to the improved signal to noise ratio of a balanced connection vs an unbalanced connection. Although an XLR connector is capable of facilitating a balanced connection, a 3.5mm connector is not. So, the 3.5mm-to-XLR adapter is not capable of facilitating a balanced connection (nor is the 3.5mm-to-1/4” TS adapter). Does that make sense?

Thank you for this video! I was wondering if you could help me with this question--are the 2 TS cables in mono, or are they automatically assigned a Left and Right signal? I know that on the mixer I can pan left and right for the 2 channels, but my question is are they the same signals(in mono) compared to the original audio from the device(phone/laptop)? 2 ts cables are each left and right; connecting them to individual channels on a mixer you would pan one left and one right to keep it stereo(not mono) or not panning and have them summed (mono)

Usually TS will be color coded; red is right channel, and black or white is the left channel. Unless you're playing music or audio that matters on which side you hear it, i.e. (movies), it does't matter how they're plugged in aslong as you pan one all left and one all right.

Any of those would be equal in this case. You can certainly use a cable like that, but I would recommend using a mixer or an interface so that you’ve got more control and so that you can utilize a balanced connection (which is important if cable is longer than 15’).
