XLR mic with your camera without an XLR input?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Can you plug a standard XLR microphone into the 1/8" (3.5mm) input on your camera.....and have it actually work?
You'd be surprised. But just always remember to use your audio knowledge and do some testings, because you can get a lot done with information and tools, even if the tools aren't always perfect.
Enjoy!
Here is the cable I used to do this - XLR to 3.5mm TRS (Tip+Ring to Pin 2 of XLR side): amzn.to/43V1Hnj
Hosa makes a version as well, it's hard to tell from the picture but this one *should do it too, amzn.to/3peyd4K

    Thank you for this . Its probably the sort of subject that many may not have considered or even thought it needed to be . But you take it head on and give tuition on why it needs to be considered , how to correctly address it and also give excellent wiring connection illustrations on how to properly construct the required adapter cable . Thank you again .

    Hi there. Thank you so much! I'm glad this video is getting seen a bit, it's something I just never tried before this video, but, as someone who's been in professional audio for over 18 years, as I said in the video, I shouldn't be surprised, because the 1/8" input on our cameras IS a preamp. But, my experience with CAMERA's has only grown in the past few years. I never owned a higher end camera until 3 years ago, and the amount of work in video (both live and recorded video) has been growing somewhat steadily for the past 8 years, ......whereas previous to 2014, my work was primarly in live-audio production with almost NO camera/video work. But, live corporate events in the past 8 years, my personal hobby/interest in video, and a LOT of streaming and recording in the past 2 years (2020/2021) has definitely progressed my video knowledge and experience with cameras exponentially. Aaaanyway, glad this video was entertaining, thank you for the kind words. Cheers!

    Hi Marcus, big fan of your channel here! Would you recommend Sennehesier MKE600 over Rode NTG for on camera mic? Mke600 has XLR end but comes with XLR to TRS cable whereas, NTG is TRS to TRS. From your video and my research here, it seems to me that it is always safer and better to go from TRS of mic to XLR of camera or recorder with transformer adapter (to reduce power from 48v to 1-4v if required) than to go from XLR to TRS. I am looking for on camera and off camera solution but pretty torn with budget. I am at the point where I either buy one good all in one solution XLR mic (Semnheiser MKE 600) with bit of trade off or buy two cheap mic, one with XLR (used Rode NTG2) and another with TRs (Videomic GOii)

    that is interesting and surprising (to me): I did not know that you could plug directly a dynamic microphone to the regular mini jack input of the camera and pretend it would work. And it does sound very nicely. At 7:40 you mention that you have used this cable a lot: is it really something that you have been using in usual contexts?

    Hi Blas. It sounds pretty good for what it is. There's definitely more noise every time I talk. I hear it in my headphones, and, it just is-what-it-is, but, it works a lot better than I thought it would. Regarding "using this cable a lot," I have actually never used it specifically like this to plug an XLR microphone into my camera, I just wondered how well it would work so I tried it. But I've used that cable a lot over the years for different purposes, sometimes feeding a signal from another mixer into my camera, or from a wireless microphone receiver. I've just had the cable for about 5 years and it's been used enough, and my particular cable is just not tight-fitting. Guess I should get a different cable!

    Here is one interesting idea to get rid of the interference: Use the 1 to 1 balanced cable (that you showed that also records one channel inverted). During editing invert that channel, then convert to mono. All noise should be cancelled out/gone.

  • @MarcusHutsell

    @MarcusHutsell

    6 ай бұрын

    Hey there. It should work, The mv7 is a dynamic mic, however it does have a pretty high impedance of 314 ohms, means you’ll have to most likely quite a bit of your tiny preamp on the camera which one does add noise. You’ll get a much better, cleaner sounding recording, using the mv7 via USB and recording into audio software and syncing later. However, you could also use the headphone output on the MV7 and send that stereo audio output over to your camera, then plug the headphones into your camera… Basically listen to yourself “through” the camera.

  • @MarcusHutsell

    @MarcusHutsell

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there Markoe. Thank you. And yes, you can use an H1n (or any other portable recorder) that has a stereo 3.5mm output. Generally just keep your camera's preamp as low as possible, then use the H1n for mic gain, then send that out of the headphone output of the H1n over to the camera. I've done that quite a bit as well as using a USB audio interface. Same method more-or-less here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y2mI1LKDnae4cpc.html

    Do you think using a cable solution like this would work if I want to connect my Rode NTG-3 to my Sony a6600 mirrorless camera? I'm not sure it will because I believe it is a condenser microphone and has no built-in battery option.

  • @MarcusHutsell

    @MarcusHutsell

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Joey. No, unfortunately that will not work because, like you said, the NTG3 doesn't have a self-power (battery) option. There are a few options if you want to stick to using your NTG3. For instance, I made a video using the Shure X2U to do JUST this type of thing. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mY1_xsaqdJy5csY.html Using an X2u isn't exactly the best solution, but it works just fine, and it *can be cheaper than buying a specific XLR module for your camera (like the Sony XLR-K3M, etc). Just remember that you're still using the 3.5mm input on the camera, and those small preamps will impart some noise and their own sound detriments..... For example, I did a similar video using a Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface and a Shure SM58 to get that signal into my camera, kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y2mI1LKDnae4cpc.html, and if you listen carefully to the audio (headphones) you can hear the difference in the direct-USB audio that I recorded on my laptop, and the same audio as it is then recorded on to the camera. But again, sometimes we just need to get signal into our cameras with what we have. Of course, a specific on-camera mic like the Rode VideoMic NTG would be a more versatile option. But, yeah, I like the sound of the NTG3!! I hope some of that helps, good luck!

    Hi there. Well, the K3M says it's compatible with the FDRAX700 camera, which means it communicates through the hot-shoe mount on the camera and sends audio from the K3M to the camera THROUGH that shoe, all digitally.........so, if you have the K3m, then you should be able to use any microphone and really shouldn't need to use the method in my video. Good luck!

    Does this solve less hissing sound when connect audio interface to xlr mic and camera?

  • @MarcusHutsell

    @MarcusHutsell

    Жыл бұрын

    HI there Insiyrah. Well, not necessarily. And, I'm not sure exactly what your set up is or what you mean, but....."hiss" (or noise) in our audio equipment can come from many sources. "Cheap" audio equipment sometimes just has more self-noise than better quality equipment. So, you have to figure out where the hiss is coming from. For example, mics like the Samson C02 have a lot more self noise in the mic itself, which will get sent over to any device that can accept that mic. I also have a cheap LyxPro CMG50 shotgun mic that has quite loud self-noise, and I talk about that mic here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoiDsJNsdtGyqto.html. So, if your mic has a loud noise floor, that noise will get sent over to the next device regardless of what that next device is. Also, I'm curious, are you using a USB Audio Interface (like a Scarlett 2i2 or similar?) and sending the analog output of the interface over to your camera's 3.5mm input? I'm curious to know exactly what you mean and how you're set up. Also remember that 3.5mm mic preamps on mirrorless and DSLR camera's are not the quietest way to record audio. Some older cameras (like my GH5) have a louder self-noise in the 3.5mm mic preamp, so, if I were to use a good quality XLR mic and record into a better quality recorder like a Zoom f8n, Zoom F6/F3, etc, then my noise would be a lot lower, as long as I followed good gain structure. Let me know a little bit more about your setup and problems. Remember, find WHERE The noise is coming from.......is it your mic? Is it your Audio interface? Is it your camera?....or is it bad gain structure? When gain structuring, always remember to start at the microphone and work your way forward through the audio chain, gaining up each point along the way to a good, strong level, before moving to the next audio device in line (even if that audio device is a camera). I hope that helps, let me know, cheers!

    Do you happen to know if the same is true for using a dynamic pic into say an iphone?

  • @MarcusHutsell

    @MarcusHutsell

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there Dizzy. So, no, that probably won't work. Most phones won't have a real preamp in them per-se, so they wouldn't be able to gain up something like an SM58. Plus, I also just tried this using a shure SM50 > XLR to 3.5mm TRS Cable > TRS to TRRS Adapter > TRRS to lighting adapter.......and it just didn't work. The phone didn't even recognize an external sound source and it defaulted to using the phone's built-in mic. Some smaller microphones that only need plug-in power do come with TRS to TRRS Cables and allow you to plug those style mics directly into smartphones. For instance, i have a Movo VXR 10 that I just tried and that worked great (because it's designed to also do that in the first place.) Movo XVR10 > 3.5mm TRS Extension cable (so I can get the mic further away from the phone) > Movo TRS to TRRS Cable > TRRS to Lighting adapter. Hit record on the phone's video camera and it takes the external mic audio. The only thing I don't like about these types of setups is that you can't monitor the audio at the same time, so you have no idea if the audio is good until you record, and then listen back. So, I don't often use mics with my iphone. Anyway, I hope that helps. Cheers!

    Im trying to connect my Sennheiser xs1 to my maonocaster lite with a XLR/stereo p2 cable and the mic is dead silent, I think the wiring inside the cable is wrong, I should try the one in this video

  • @MarcusHutsell

    @MarcusHutsell

    10 ай бұрын

    Hi there. I'm not familiar with the Moana equipment, but I downloaded some of the specs, and, it's a bit hard to tell. The main thing they don't state is whether the 3.5mm inputs on the Moano Caster are STEREO or BALANCED. Chances are, they are STEREO (expecting Left/Right/Ground on the tip-ring-sleeve), but your Sennheiser XS1 mic is a standard dynamic mic, which will send out (Hot/Cold/Ground on the Tip-Ring-Sleeve). If the inputs on the Moano caster are expecting STEREO, then yes, you should try the cable I'm using in this video. The 2nd thing is how much gain the 3.5mm input on the Moano Caster can provide. Dynamic mics require a lot of gain, and I don't see anywhere in the specs that state how much gain the inputs can provide. However, for only a few $, trying the cable I use in this video would be worth it...it *most likely will work just fine.

Here is a link to another brand, but properly-wired cable: amzn.to/43V1Hnj this one *should do it too, amzn.to/3peyd4K you just have to make sure that pin 2 on the XLR side gets wired to BOTH the Tip and Ring on the 3.5mm side.....and then pin 3 from the XLR side gets grounded to pin 1.

    I've actually had this exact cable for a long time. But you just need an XLR to 1/8" cable, but it must be wired specifically so that it unbalances the connection on the 1/8" side. (baasically taking pin 2 from the XLR side, duplicating it over to pins 2 & 3 on the 1/8" side. And then pin 3 on the XLR side is shorted to pin 1 (ground)). Long story short, any of these cables are the same thing: Option 1: Cable Matters - amzn.to/3PuIjFK Option 2: Hosa - amzn.to/3SPW2ty

  • @MarcusHutsell

    This is true. It I had received a question about “will it work” the way I do it in the video, so I wanted to test. I’m aware of the seramonic adapter, but since I already had a 3.5mm to XLR cable, and that cable is often $10 or under, it’s still a potentially viable option if you’re in a pinch and ONLY have a mic and cables. This video was more of a “proof of concept.”
