The public needs more public service videos as this one. In every trade, every business, there are scam artists. They are also lawyers, doctors, architects, engineers, besides the slew of contractors who give every trade a bad name. They are also politicians, policemen and more. Not for naught is the saying, "Let the buyer beware."

I always thought you get what you pay for. Not in this case! I went with Hy-Grade roofing even though they were by far the most expensive quote I received. Worst decision I could have made. They promised to install the roof in 4-6 weeks, of course they were late. When they finally showed up without the proper equipment and they damaged my property. Sad part is that my poor wife found the damage after coming home from her frontline COVID job. Broke my heart to see how upset she was when she saw the damage! SHAME ON HY-GRADE! They are really proud of the “Quality Audit” that they do, but of course they won’t give you a copy of the audit…lol BTW - the “Quality Audit” they did at my house consisted of 2 guys coming over to pick up the leftover junk they left at my house for a month. They never even went up on the roof! Horrible customer service experience! Save your money use someone else!

This is one of the greatest works of fiction I've ever seen: 1. Dave doesn't have the right accent for a dodgy builder. 2. Most old duffers wouldn't have the presence of mind to call Trading Standards 3. Even if they did, there's no way Trading Standards would send someone around to look some random geezer's roof at all, let alone on the same day or the next day.

  • @johnw2758

It's the extras that are added on that irritate me. We had a builder give us a quote but, apparently there was a gas pipe that needed shortening that he hadn't seen (this gas pipe was clearly visible and not hidden), so obviously he added the £100 on to my final bill. The thing is, I was in my backyard and heard the gas fitter and him talking and the guy wanted £50 to shorten the pipe and cash exchanged hands. I was really pissed off as the full job was quite a few thousand . No, I wasn't after 'free' work but just thought it was a bit below the belt..

My sister in Eastbourne had a builder out to replace a broken tile ,( legit ) on her 3 story house which was fixed . He also said the lead wanted replacing around the chimney stack , £1000 . She paid . He went up the roof , took off the old lead and never to return to fix the new lead . My sister didn't know this until it rained heavy for a few days when the rain came down the walls into the kitchen . So beware, if in doubt get a second opinion , please , it will save you thousands .

Probably the biggest problem is with poor tile installation,is If tiles are cut down valleys too close, is that the tiles wear over time from weather and will leave sandy debris and block the valley channel and water will run laterally and leak.

Any time the government gets involved your going to pay double. Id hire an unlicenced workman with verifiable refrences over the "approved" guy every time. I saved my neighbor $3500 on a roof job this way and he got a superior job by putting some of the savings into better material. The key to this is verifying refrences. If a workman isnt refered by a trusted person id need 5 refrences and id call all of them and ask if i could come by and inspect the work. That weeds out the fakers. Ill purchace material if necessary but seldom give $$ up front.

So if a customer can check this page for quality and trusted tradesmen I wonder if there is a way I can apply to be put on that list then as I think this is a very good way of doing things and even if you get a customer from an advert to can give them this website and telephone number so they can check up on me and know I am trusted I like this idea a lot so I am going to try and work out how I can get on that list. I could get a lot more work this way. I already do most of my work through word of mouth and not advertising anyway, a happy customer tells their family/friends etc about you and shows them what you have done, they can then call you and know what to expect and so on, if you are a good priced honest tradesmen you can really make good money not even advertising. I my local area myself and my father have been in business for over twenty years now and still have repeat customers from when we first started out together, my father has been in the trade 40 years and was on his own before I came in with him but it just goes to show there are honest people out there and I hate to see this sort of thing as it makes our job so much harder as everyone is rightfully cautious of you when they first meet you and it can be so hard to get that contract and then they go with the big companies that charge three times more just because of their size, but they normally only use sub contractors so there is still never any guarantee what kind of quality you are going to get so you pay three times more to actually still have me doing your job but a lot of people sitting behind a desk getting very rich.

I made the mistake of employing a gypsy roofer to work on my roof. He arrived with a labourer who had the shakes and was stinking of booze. The would-be roofer attempted to re-bed my ridge tiles on a hip roof with only a roof ladder. Even though I told him I wanted my ridge tiles re-bedded he just smeared cement down the edges of the tiles. He was swinging about like a monkey on the roof ladder. It is nearly impossible to find a decent roofer now. The good ones are always busy.
