That is the absolute worst way to replace a slate.Snow and ice will bend the metal down in the first winter and the slate will fall causing damage,person injury or death on the ground.Look up Joe Jenkins he is the master at it.

During a heavy wind driver rain, would water eventually work it's way sideways under the tile and down through the nail?

This is a UK method which does not work in the US. Strap hangers will open up with ice and snow sliding down a roof. Use slate hooks to install the replacement slates in the US, or else use the nail and bib method. These are illustrated in the Slate Roof Bible.

Not a fan of these lead straps as I have had several slide off on my roof within 5 years but the original existing nailed slates have been seated for 150 years

I thought tingles were the normal repair method on slate roofs, so I don't understand the criticism - particularly as the critic has failed to indicate a better method of doing the job. Our last home was a 250 year old stone barn, with a good few tingle repairs on the Welsh slate roof - and in 13 years we went through some pretty bad winters up on the hilltop without losing a single slate to the snow and ice. Informative video, by the way, and some good health and safety tips.

I've had tingles on my roof in Scotland bend from snow/ice, but that was back in the 90's when we actually had any. It's probably just going to get safer with every year now, sadly.

First thing he did wrong is lift the ripper. That immediately stresses slate above. No lifting. Period. Straight down ONLY.

copper nails is not as good as galvanised!galaxies are quarter the price stronger last longer and grip alot better to the slates and timber they are fixed to!also that repair is very 100 year ago!lead isn't robust or rigid enough through expanding and contracting!either swing slates above it and use high quality adhesive or high tensile tying wire x😉

I have used this method to repair a broken piece on a slate roof. It works well unless you have a snow and/or ice load on the roof. the snow or ice will easily bend any metal, especially lead, and the tile will fall out. If you punch a hole in the middle of the tile(between the two tiles above) and fasten it with a copper nail, then install a copper bib to flash the nail head it will never fail. I have been repairing old slate roofs for years and have seen the attempts that have failed and those that stand the test of time. The method in the video works well in warm climates and on low slope roofs.

Yes I agree the Bib method is not expose like the clip

I allways use slate hooks for slate repairs for security and it looks aesthetically sound! Using lead tabs for single slate repairs should be abolished!

Lead strap on a new roof. How nice. Really ? Bet the client would love to see it .how about a halls clip or a hook or you could have bibbed it two minutes. Jeese . lead tingles should be outlawed.

Tt wont last one hot day. Slates get hot = malleable lead, the weight of the slate would very easily bend the lead back down and slide over. If you are going to do it use coat hanger type wire and bend it back up the slate at least one inch.

I cut a strip off a velux soaker, it's a better fix lead opens up the zinc stops rigid, anyway the idea is to keep off the slates, ok hitting a knot in the lath can damage the slates,you see it's the bounce, small screw does the trick.

People are going to watch this video and think that this is the way to repair slate just Because it's an Englishman Talking about slate repair.

the slates should always be center nailed and a dpc soaker over the nail, alot tidier, and maybe use a better ripper as that ones a bit too thick for ripping out tight slates., plus i think the hip ridge should of been laid before slate repairs as more will get broken

Shoddy bloke, as others have said, lead strap on a new roof, bad news, client does not wnt their new roof to look damaged from day one. Try invisifix, or mastic above and below slate even. I would also use mastic in addition to a lead strap too if I did lower my standards to using that strap. Would have been easier to rip out if firstly they had not been nailed too tightly, and also, get a thinner slate rip, old school is best, old solid forged rips with handles at right angle part to hit with hammer, far superior to those horrible blue ones. Suggest getting the end of that rip on a belt sander, thin it out a bit. For members of the public without a rip, don;t hire one, get the thin end of a handsaw for cutting wood, sandvic etc. Cut a nick in it with a grinder at about 45o angle, that will catch the nail and be good for a few uses. Always use thin copper nails over aluminium too, as ripping out aluminium nails tends to slice them off and leave an annoying stump making putting the replacement slate up a harder job, and contrary to what this man, or possibly a lady, I'm not sure of their gender says, you try not to use the rip to snap the nail, you want it to catch the nail, then drag the whole thing out of the way. done properly and with some luck, it will either come out caught in your slate rip, or fire down the roof, fully removed.

put some tar under......to glue that new slate in..works good

You used a copper nail with the lead hanger . Why not use a copper bib. Which you can not see and you cup it to keep it from sliding out . If you think it not as secure there is a modification we have created to prevent that.

Should use copper tag.

One thing about people that own slate roofs they are from old wealthy homes formerly . Most of them are historical sites

Poor job on a new roof? lead will straighten with time and snow allowing the slate to fall out. A real bodger.

Agreed, the steeper the roof the more likely the lead will straight too. While he was there a bit of Stixall would help. That why the Scottish way is better, sarken and a slate spike.

Roof looks terrible! Poor customer unaware of the poorly laid Slates and to have a repair on a new roof?? It all looks wrong even down to your repair method.

Glad we don't use tile batons for slate up here in Scotland. Take the nail either side to the above slate. Turn to nail. Lead toggle🤦. A tingle is used on cement slates no natural slates. 😂😂

Why not a slate hook or why not nail and bib it(which is my preferred way)? What a Terrible thing to do to a new roof. The First time snow and ice slides down that roof the strap will be folded down and the slate is going with it especially using something as soft as lead. I hear everyone run their mouth about America and yeah we have hacks here but obviously their everywhere. Shaking my head.

If he's the head of department doing such a shite repair, I really don't want to see the roofers in his company.

NO CRITICISM BUT ON A BRAND NEW ROOF YOU ARE ALREADY STRAPPING SLATES. On a new roof you strip back regardless and replace the tile properly. Or at least use a solid adhesive so the new slates match on a new roof
