Caught in Shootout in Rio de Janeiro Favela 🇧🇷

Pablo also known as Jesus, a friend of mine that I made whilst visiting Rio, was eager to show me around his neighbourhood or Favela where he was born and raised.
"Zona Norte" (North Zone) is known to have the worst Favelas in the whole of Brazil, with armed militias roaming and guarding the streets.
I was not expecting what was about to go down.
Get your popcorn ready.
Valeu!

This is not just a traveling vlog in my eyes. This is true journalism. Respect to both Kurt and the people he meets and travel together with. I have nothing but respect for this, and it's an humbling but enjoyable experience to watch. I don't get the impression that this is just to show off, like some (haters) claims. He has a genuine interest in the people and the stories and places that normally isn't shared with the rest of the world . Wish you safe travels wherever you go, Kurt! 👊🏻🕊️

Interesting to me that in the decades I watched mainstream television, no attempts were made by the BBC or its competition to portray favella inhabitants as human beings with the same hopes and fears as the rest of us. It's *almost* as if some in high-up positions want us to be suspicious of and fear each other so the divisions and misunderstandings remain. Bless you Kurt, you're doing magnificent work.

There have 100% been docs on the BBC and CBC depicting the inhabitants of the fevallas as being normal people just in extreme poverty surrounded by continuing violence, one where the followed one guy and his family who sell shirts. However they also have a responsibility not to fool dumb western travelers into thinking "oh let me just go there for a good cheap time, take some drugs, sleep with some prostitutes and enjoy the culture" because the reality is 70% will be get robbed 5% maybe killed.

As an American from Boston, I have come to know a LOT of Brazilians who have emigrated to the USA, as the Boston-area has one of the largest number of Brazilians in the entire US. Anyway, those that I have met from Rio would tell me that naive tourists see all the glamour of Copacabana Beach, and the mistake many make is they stray from Copacabana to just a block behind, and the safety factor is MUCH less than it was just a couple minutes earlier, and that tourists get in trouble a lot as a result.

Kurt really brings you with on a trip, meets and interacts with locals, strolls through the streets, visits homes and you just really get a good impression of the life in such incredibly dangerous and normally completely inaccessible areas of the world. It is because nobody dares to expose himself to such dangers, and is not able to look at everything from another perspective, that there is comparatively nobody like him. It is incredibly fascinating to see how the people adapt to live in such circumstances, from the electricity supply to the gunshots and self-regulated favelas. Im sorry to be donnish but only 8% of brazillians live in favelas, it's not a day to day thing for us. And Kurt was in Rio de Janeiro and, in Rio de Janeiro, decided to go to one of the top dangerous places in Brazil. For example, Brazil is so big and unequal that the south has a very high HDI (same thing with other regions, it varies so much in history, population, HDI, culture, cousine) because actually there were land distribution to european immigrants. Sadly, there was slavery in Brazil and for too long, so most of very poor people are descended from slaves that were exploited by rich european descended dudes. Rio de Janeiro actually is half rich half poor. And it's like, the rich are living in fucking first world with the nautre and natural beauties, maybe with higher violence than first world places. The poor are very poor and mistreated by governments through history. Only recently it became "cool" to support poor people, but it's surface level support, not like the dominant elite politicians care about the poor part

@Big Dog you can't go anywhere u want, before you step into a new place you should do research beforehand knowing what to expect and how to behave to not get in trouble. you don't want to end up in private cartel territory with a camera on recording, if this red shirt guy wasn't with him there's a high chance he wouldn't know these rules and would get in serious trouble. there are communities and places with their rules u must follow and respect, otherwise you going to pay the cost, whether you get stripped naked and lose everything for misconduct or get killed. Kurtz is very smart and he behave in a friendly and kind manner, now imagine some douche bag with ego walk in those places, obviously he not gonna survive for long.

Keen observation, the bridge bit was a great example of that. Talked about how the criminals paid for the bridge to be built (obviously for more control alongside helping the community) but he has to just say that it was out of the kindness of their hearts since they were driving by. also the amount of times Kurt had to put the camera away was intense.

It is very interesting because you are exploring the heart of the city and not the usual tourist spots we see on mainstream tv. It is facinating to see how the locals live and how humble the people are.
