Caught in a Thunder Storm-RAGBRAI 50 - Ep 5

RAGBRAI 2023, the 50th year! This is episode 5 in a series of videos documenting the fun and excitement as we ride 500 miles across Iowa. In this video, we hit every single water feature on a 115 degree day, get pummeled by a big ol' thunder storm, ride through the Iowa Hawkeyes stadium and finally make it to the Mississippi River in Davenport.

I am too lazy, I would opt for the full service charter. Where they set up and take down your tent, transport you and your bike from the end town to the starting point. Showers, the whole damn thing. You only live once, mi amigo.

Ok, yes, I can sign up with oosbicycleclub…. But it appears that in 2023, most of you carried your own gear. When checking out the OOS site, carrying bags is one of the options. In 2024, are you recommending that OOS do it all? I would like to do what the majority of the team does.

Thank you for another memorable video series Ryan. Am from Iowa City, so you rode past my house, just as you did in 2018. I was thinking about you and your team during the big storm. Several tornadoes touched down that day SW of Coralville, went back up in the skies, and then touched down again about 10 miles northeast in Solon (the damage is still being repaired that it brought). The Coralville and Iowa City crew did a heck of a job making sure everyone was safe. Every possible plan (it's Iowa, after all!) was created beforehand. Profit was lost from the big band, but the staff's priority was making sure everyone was safe. Like you said, it is what brought everyone together, and Mother Nature didn't want to mess everything up! Maybe add "No stormies" to your chant :D. I rode on the very last day cheering on all the riders as they were so happy for the cooldown (I was going to ride the full week, but couldn't because of work). Got lots of comments on my 600 and people knowing you by name! I hope to see you next year when Team Duzer returns to Iowa! Thanks again for the videos of your wonderful journey.

There is exactly ONE thing that makes me wish I could go back and cycle in America, and that would be to go on RAGBRAI! What makes it doubly sad is that for almost thirty years, my primary bike of choice was a Linear recumbent that had been made in Gutenberg - you guessed it! - Iowa!

Some 25 years ago my wife and I did the first Tanqueray Texas AIDS ride starting in Austin to Houston and ending in downtown Dallas. It took 6 days and we had the best support team ever along the way. 600 miles through Texas in early October with weather as changing as the scenery. It was still one of the best experiences of my life. I remember rolling into downtown Dallas as one big group and it happened to be my 50th birthday. I made so many friends along the way that I never saw again but still cherish their memories. We returned the next year and did it again. I was inspired by the 97 year old gentleman in an earlier video to maybe attempt this ride across Iowa on Team Duzer since I’m only 75 now. I better start training and get my daughter involved so she might can meet Amelia along the way. Amelia has been a real inspiration to her running ultras in Colorado. I really thank you for your videos and the inspiration you share in them.

Good one Ryan and Amelia! The ultimate triathlon would have been for Amelia to run 100 miles, bicycle halfway across Iowa, and then...swim across the Mississippi!! Woohoo! Of course the 50th RAGBRAI needed to be another challenging one. I lived in Iowa City as a kid, rode a few days of the event in 2015, and considered doing it this year so maybe next year. The Amanas are awesome, yes there are several of them.

I used to work with a guy who ran marathons all over the world, who was so kind and supportive and tried to get me to join his running groups. Day 6 was absolutely intense. The sunflower fields outside of that massive hill in Amana was amazing. Riding through Kinnick stadium in Coralville was an experience on day 7. Day 7 had me riding in a paceline for about 6 miles at one point, and were we cooking about 26mph the entire time. Tire dipping and finishing was bittersweet for me. Knocked a bucket list item off for me. Dipping my tire in the Mississippi River was an incredible feeling know I rode 531 miles in 39 hours with 17,200 feet of elevation gain, and reached a top speed of 45.1mph. My last, and one of my best/favorite memories of the week was meeting you at the Casey's in Buffalo by the pizza carousel. Made my day sir! I'll never forget that.

I don't think so and if you see her IG channel she no longer lives in Boulder and the fact that Ryan hasn't mentioned her in any YT video or IG post since the summer it's safe to say that they've chosen different paths and kinda want to keep it a private affair.

Hi Ryan, I have a few logistic questions regarding Ragbrai. I do not drive either. I live in Milwaukee, Wisco. I am a cyclist, I have accomplished a 100 mile day. This is something I would like to accomplish alone and meet new people, however I am not sure how to find transportation there. If I can find confidence there, I will begin to train for the weeks ride. ✌️

It can be tricky to get there without a car...try to find a ride with someone, that's what I do...look for RAGBRAI forums on Facebook and ask around for people in your area who are driving

Ryan, that must have been your 600? I think I saw you on a 600. I have a 600 for over a year now. I usually put 700 or more miles a month on. I was thinking about getting a 600x or maybe another priority bike. I love my pinion, so I hope they make more models with the pinion.
