Something different on my KZread-channel!
My wife has asked me to build a cat patio for many years.
It will finally come true! ;)
Let's build a cat patio! It took about 3 days to build and design.
Catio has an area of 4x2 meters. The size of the frame elements is 2x2 meters. A total of 8 elements of the same size. 6 for wall and 2 for roof.
Timber used here; its size is 2 x 2 inch wood

    I am so happy to see someone make a catio without going overboard on the materials. Some notes of others are looking into these: - It is worth the wait to stain the wood before assembly. - Instead of U nails to fix the fencing to the wood you can use a staple gun, the longer the staples it can drive, the better. - Design to the lumber size. Here they used 8 ft wide panels and 4 ft rolled steel wire so few cuts. Can leave side panels 8 ft tall to decrease cutting more but will need more fencing. - Look for multi use, so if you want a screened in outdoor sitting area, use pet and insect screening instead. - More complicated things like doors you can buy pre-made if you aren't very handy. - They didn't use steel wire panels but a roll which saved a LOT of money. You can probably go up to 2" by 4" wire mesh. - If you're not as concerned with the final look, can save money using chicken wire. - Corners here might not stand up over time, or you might not be as handy with assembly. Can cut triangles from thin plywood to put at each corner of the panels to stiffen them. - You might want to cover part of it later, so put the top at a slight angle. Then if you want to cover part of it, you can use thin plywood or just a tarp. - Ground swell might be an issue in some areas so put might set it over a gravel trench. - Allow some access doors in long walkways for access - I recommend every 4 ft so you can reach easily. - Scrounge, notice they had 1 fixture some steps and a barrel, another a large cutting from a tree. If you had a wind spinner, you could connect this to a string and toy to keep the cats busy when the wind blows. - Definitely need a cat door to keep insects out. - If the entire path is covered and close, can move the catbox outside. - Bird feeders and bird baths near the catio keeps them occupied. - If it will also serve as a dog run or you are concerned with other animals digging in and then accessing the house, dig a trench, extend the fence into the ground at least 6 inches (prefer up to 1 ft), and fill with gravel around it to discourage digging. Also if it will be for a dog as well then put the fencing on the inside of the braces rathr than the outside (harder for larger animal to push through). If you are going with a really large area, consider using steel piping instead of larger size lumber, placing the bottom in holes with poured quickrete. - The price will be comparable or cheaper with pipe. - If really large runs aren't sturdy enough, can place a slightly smaller pipe in a larger one to double the wall thickness - I used this to make a weight bench bar. - It has less maintenance. - You can space out the supports further so you don't need as many inside supports. - You can buy clips, or just weave a wire around the fence mesh, or cut the outside wire and loop, to make two section of wire into 1 (two 4 ft sections into 1 8 ft wide fence section). - You can buy threaded fittings for the joints. - Threading the pipe is easy and there are lots of KZread videos to show you how. - You can even use the fittings and short sections of pipe to make elevated platforms, etc. and U-bolt wood for the walkways. - Consider a miter box to make it easier to cut piping square.

    Hi, love the video and these bonus tips. Can you tell if the posts are 2x2, 4x4, or something in between?

  • @1SCme

    @1SCme

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ianrhine4049 They say in their description they are using all 2x2 inch wood, from the video it looks like they are using rough cut lumber (not planed/sanded to a smooth finish). They aren't using corner posts, and aren't securing to the ground, just screwing the 2x2 panels together. Getting corners 90 degrees is important, so you want a square or similar. Many would be reluctant to use 2x2s for strength, but when I was younger I built an 8x8x4 ft tall dog run, covered with chicken wire on all sides (dog liked to dig), unsecured to the ground (so it could be moved to mow under), and it was fine for strength - we could easily move it to a new spot, and it didn't fall apart as it aged. Notice they screwed the corners so the ends overlapped the side, so the outside of the top is 2 meters from the house. If they had placed the end overlapping the sides, the panels would have been 2 inches too short between the home and the outside of the wall to rest on top of the wall. 1:24 It looks like they saved some money buying 7 ft. long 2x2s and cutting to 2 meters (about 6.5 ft). I think they did this because that was the width of their wire mesh 2:52 Could have saved most cutting by leaving 7 ft tall and just cutting the width to match the mesh. The extra height would have been nice, particularly if you are going to slope so you can add a cover later. I would suggest securing to the ground for wind, especially if you might put a cover on the top for shade, but you don't have to use posts. They make ground "auger anchor" that you screw into the ground. On Amazon you can buy a pack of 4 anchors for $20. Install these a few inches from the corner. Look for ones with that will accept a bolt at the top, or has a threaded top, so you can drill a hole through the bottom of your frame and bolt to the anchor (some just have a loop at the top for tying down with rope). Will want to be in the ground at least 1 ft. deep. You might go deeper if you are concerned with frost heave, but if this happens I would suggest just "screwing" the anchor in deeper. They show these being installed with a drill, but I doubt a drill is powerful enough - will need to switch to a wrench or ratchet. Stretching the wire mesh so it is tight and flat is more difficult than it looks. An easy hint is: 1. Put 2 panels end to end, with the outside elevated about 10 inches with blocks, to form a "V". 2. Secure the mesh at the end (away from the wire mesh roll). 3. Pull the mesh across both panels reasonably tight - it will not be lying flat on the panels, but forming a triangle across the top of the "V". 4. Secure the mesh at the other end (roll end). 3. Cut the mesh off from the rest of the roll. 3. Remove the block and push the panels flat, stretching the wire mesh tight (about 3/4 inch if each panel is 8 ft. long). 4. Tack down the mesh in the middle and the sides. 5. Cut the middle separating the panels to complete. If you want it tighter or not as tight, can increase the elevation to be more or less than 10 inches. If you slope the top to add a cover for shade, it doesn't have to be a large slope, just enough to keep the water from collecting in the middle if it droops, just a few inches from top to bottom should be enough. Easiest to make the ends flat, then fill in the space made by the slope with mesh or solid, or can leave open if small enough the cat can't fit through. Just make sure the top overlaps the side panel by at least 1 inch to secure. Last note - I think they used 1x8 inch boards for the bottom of the small walk from the home. Cats like having an elevated walk and sitting area around the catio so you might have use for more. Cheaper to use thin plywood or just paneling (it isn't holding a lot of weight), with a couple coats of paint or protectant, as long as it isn't particle board, OSB, or something else that doesn't like water.
