Caterham F1 Team - A Total Failure

Спорт

Caterham Formula 1 Team competed in Formula 1 from 2012 until 2014, though they can be traced back to Lotus Racing in 2010, their former name. Caterham didn't have a very successful stint in Formula 1, they never won a race, stood on the podium, or even scored just one single point. Caterham ran a striking green livery that i was a big fan of, but unfortunately, the team were forced to enter administration and their former factory in Oxfordshire sits abandoned.

If I'm being completely honest, the only two somewhat decent things about Caterham were their drivers and (sometimes) their livery. I mean, a team principal who gave up on his team midway through 2014 speaks volumes

Basically what happened that Renault were still in 2010...however after the Crashgate, Renault was forced to leave the sport and so came in the Lotus... Also the original Lotus F1 team which had the legend Colin Chapman as their team principal was sold to a Japanese company back in the 1991 and from then it was owned by a Malaysian Company that made replica Lotus 7 kit cars under the name Catherham and thus the name came in 2011 and took full takeover in 2012

What always shocked me from Caterham is how they landed big name sponsors such as Airbus, Bombardier, GE, etc., not the kind of obscure companies backmarker teams are usually sponsored by; and how they folded despite the backing of these large companies.

Air Asia were in big trouble last year as an Airbus corruption probe implicated that one of Tony's sports team received about $50mil in sponsorship in exchange for purchase of Airbus planes. They were cleared of any charges though. Tony as long since put the team behind him and never looked back but there are still some Caterham legacy lingering within the Airline. The Mirus Hawk passenger seats on Air Asia's A321 NEO planes are designed and built by ex-Caterham Composites engineers and the patents are still held by Composite Designs EU GmbH (aka Caterham Composites).

The problem Caterham (Lotus from 2010-11) had, like the other teams that entered the sport in 2010, Virgin (latterly Marussia, then Manor), and HRT, had the financial rug pulled from under their feet before their cars even appeared. They went for their entries in F1 on the basis that the teams would have a budget cap, which the FIA was pushing for from 2010 onwards, however, the big teams refused to subscribe to it. The result was, while Manor ultimately emerged as the most successful of the 3, scoring 2 points finishes (P9 for Bianchi in Monaco 2014 and P10 for Wehrlein in Austria 2016) in their time in the sport, but realistically, they were never going to be able to survive long term

@@SiVlog1989 I really, really wish that the FIA had enforced the current budget restrictions then, because we would have had Marussia, Caterham, HRT, and so many other teams thriving in competition and maybe even a full grid. Now we just have 10 teams, but with the new budget cap, I'm really looking forward to the inevitable 11th team. Probably going to be a Renault or Ferrari feeder team, most likely an Alpine one tbh. But yeah, we can't be upset over what didn't happen in the past, just hopeful for the future. And hey, there's always a possibility that another Caterham comes by and thrives in the coming years :D

I was involved with the team for just under 4 years, there were a lot of very hard working people in the team and everyone wanted good things for the team. They were going up against teams spending 5x their budget. Yes the cars were not great, they had to use a lot of older technology that was developed usually around 1 year prior. Tony was a great guy and really did give it 100%. All this talk of it being his play thing is just total BS. I think if TF had kept the team he might have pulled it through but the new owners, well, I cant say but we know how the story ended. Some of the guys in your photos now work at top teams and are highly regarded in 2021 so all this talk of them being sh&t is just that...

The FIA let these teams down in a big way, tbh. They entered with promises that there would be new regulations to limit spending and then found themselves entering the sport with the same insane big spending that had gone before. It's tough enough to enter against the experience of existing teams but to do it on such vastly lower budgets was always going to be impossible.

  • @SteffenT1981

With the financial crisis of 2008, several teams of large auto companies suddenly realized how expensive F1 had become. Honda immediately stopped Super Aguri's activities and announced the Honda team's withdrawal at the end of the 2008 season. BMW and Toyota announced that they would stop after 2009. And IIRC even Renault and Mercedes thought about reducing their efforts. At this point in 2008, it therefore seemed likely that four of the existing teams would have disappeared by the end of 2009. The FIA wanted to fill those gaps with new teams and Lotus, Virgin, HRT and USF1 were the best they could find with the promise of a budget cap. From the point of view of these new teams, the economic situation of the remaining large manufacturers unfortunately improved. Once again they wanted to spend insane amounts of money, and therefore used their influence to prevent the budget cap.

It's honestly another Tony Fernandes vanity project. Around the same time, he also bought into Queen's Park Rangers and managed to coerce Malaysia Airlines to sponsor QPR (which thankfully got cancelled). This is why I felt that the only reason he got that Lotus name is because he wanted to shake some money from Proton, the Malaysian company that then owned Lotus.

Giedo van der Garde... damn, you just brought back some flashbacks lol. He pushed that shitbox to great places, it's such a mega shame he never appeared in F1 again. Same goes to Robert Doornbos, but eventually it would be Verstappen who'd finally break through in 2016.

We definitely could’ve had a longer video for this, caterham where such a disaster you probably could have got a half hour video essay done about them😂 (and for some reason it’s a subject that no other f1 youtuber wants to make a video on) do it for the continuity, tear into caterham, burn them with a full essay, nobody else seems willing to do it, what is there to lose, I’d love a proper deep dive in to just how bad it really was 👍

The 2014 Monaco GP was the killing blow for Caterham as Jules Bianchi finished 9th in that race. The 9th place gives 2 points, which were crucial for Marussia in the Constructors' championship, but for Caterham it was the death sentence as Sauber who also had 0 points, but had better and mor reliable car and by the Russian Grand Prix Sauber had 2 11th places compared to just one for Caterham. Also by that point Marussia was also struck by financial trouble (and also reeling from Bianchi's horrific crash at Suzuka which will claim his life nearly 9 months later) and if it wasn't for that 9th place in Monaco, the team wouldn't have even made it to the 2015 season as well. And speaking of Marussia - it was saved, but with no car to be built in time, they requested to use the 2014-spec car and power unit (as they couldn't afford to acquire the newer-spec units from Ferrari either). But to get this permission they needed the approval of the remaining 9 teams. And Force India was strongly against it (since if the team disappears the prize money Marussia earned would have been redistributed between the remaining teams). It was then decided to update the existing MR03 to 2015-spec, but with the 2014-spec Ferrari power unit

The reason for failure of Caterham F1, Marussia and HRT is because they were promised to have a limited budget cap being introduced in F1, to allow new teams to operate within that budget. That budget cap was never implemented and because these teams did not had the means to continue, they had to be folded. And to make life worse, they were imposed with higher engine costing due to the Hybrid era engine.

I was there from start to finish and in 2014 all the staff got royally shafted, redudancy payments were nowhere near what they should have been. My wife worked there too and still to this very day has not had one penny from the debacle! They even told her in a letter that she would not be paid for the month that she had just worked and was also told in the very same letter that she was being made redundant for 'NO OTHER REASON' whatever that meant!!!...
