What Happened to F1 In Vietnam?

Спорт

It's a bit of an unknown. When Liberty Media took ownership of Formula 1, the first new race deal they made was with Vietnam back in 2018. Fair to say that this was a historic deal and race. The event was planned for 2020 but here we are going into 2022 with the future of the Vietnam Grand Prix unclear. The Hanoi Street Circuit was an interesting one, designed by Hermann Tilke, fans were critical of its layout. For me, i can't bring myself to judge a track i have never seen a race on. So on that front, we may never know how good it is. This is the story of what was set to be a normal deal, but ended up falling apart due to the pandemic, and the main organiser getting sentenced to 5 years jail. Enjoy.

As a Vietnamese I was mad excited for it, I even told my boss back in 19 that I would took a 1 week vacation to go to Hanoi and see it. Hell I even made acquaintance with a Hanoi girl so I'd have someone local to take me to the track. Then it happened as we all know. I may never be able to attend an actual F1 raceday in my life time and knowing I got so close to, really hurts my feeling. And no, F1 actually has a quite decent population of fans in Vietnam, it's just that we're not that wealthy to go to other countries to watch it.

Vietnamese F1 fan here, the F1 fanbase here is definitely small comparing to other sports like football, but still there are people who are interested in F1, but most of them are middle-aged mans who started watching the sport in the 2000s. But still a TV service provider in my country has recently acquired the rights to broadcast races after Fox Sports ceased their activities in Asia. Amist the COVID situation here I understand that the organizers didn't want the race to go ahead as it would have angered many citizens, but as dull as the track is, I'd still love to see a true F1 race in my country.

I came from Vietnam. I'm a big fan of motorsports. I've always dreamt of going to a race on my own. The dream was coming together when they announce the Hanoi circuit, which was only a few kilometers away from where I live, my dad even rode me the sequences of corner that intersected the public roads (turns 2,3 and 4, the long run down turn 10). Then when the news hit me, I was... desperate. Obviously the biggest blame would be the pandemic, but when you take into account the amount of roads fixed, the money that was put into this, and the hype as well (an ad on the radio about the VN GP is pretty common), it just hits me hard. Of course, the track can be dull (I can relate), but honestly, seeing and hearing those F1 cars around the streets where I grew up on would be fascinating. It's a shame it never happened. Edit: GREAT NEWS! In 2022, there will be a Vietnamese Motorkhana series (FIA-approved) on this exact track, and plans are still being made to put this track back on the F1 calendar in 2023!

I too am doubtful whether we'll see a Chinese Grand Prix again anytime soon, but more for political reasons. All these sporting events in the PRC paid for by the government are just supposed to advertise the country anyway, and we've recently seen Beijing make a hard turn from using soft power like that to hard power, which makes paying for a Chinese Grand Prix no longer fit with their strategy. And let's be honest, if teams or drivers were to start boycotting the race because of the ongoing Uyghur genocide, speak out against it in press conferences, or run special liveries to signal their discontent, that could only hurt the PRC's reputation further. I won't really miss it though. Shanghai is a generally fine track, but far from exceptional.

However, with Covid-19 and no money coming in, the track wasn't bringing in any money to maintain those extravagant and brash facilities. wish there was a race somewhere in mainland asia. There hasnt been a race for the past 2 years (going to be 3) since china. Theres a lot of fans here and something f1 would call "untapped potential". If you can have 2 race in the US, there should atleast be 4+ in asia for the number of people here. I know a lot of people in India including me who would just love to go watch a race, but we have to travel thousands of miles for it.

Personally I wish that the F1 calendar was a bit more dynamic, if say we end up with a 25 race season maybe have 12 or 13 permanent tracks and have then have a pool of 20-25 that rotate in and out. After all one of the best things about Covid was going to tracks like Imola, Nuremberg, Mugello and Portimoa which we wouldn’t have otherwise and if we could widen the tracks that F1 goes to further while protecting tracks that are seen as the Crown Jewels of the calendar that would surely be better for the fans. And maybe with tracks having years off that would also give the poor tracks a chance to be evaluated and changes made to try and improve it where as with only a year that might limit the ability to do so

@@luislicona386 I would probally have Silverstone, Monza, Spa, Canada, one of the german races (personally I prefer Hokenheim), Intalogos, Suzuka. Monaco has to be in there too despite not being great race, not sure Ciruit of Americas has done enough really to yet being considered a crown jewel circuit but it has pretty good racing and they would want a perm US circuit on the calender. Australia would probably need to be there too although not the biggest fan of Albert Park.. Barca has the heritage to be in that list although again not a fan, they do so much testing there it destroys the racing IMHO. Finally I guess you need one of the middle east ones despite again often not being the best races just because of the money aspect, although which one could be problematic. I'm probably missing a good one that deserves to be there either for heritage or financial reasons

@@SimonWakefieldUK I agree with pretty much all of your picks. I think Australia should definitively have a spot and I would also complete it with Malaysia which I've always enjoyed, Spain which also has some good tracks that could rotate each year, Mexico which has a truly massive fanbase and adds something different with the altitude, Abu Dhabi which has kind of become the closing ceremony for the F1 calendar and yeah I would keep an American GP. I wish it was Long Beach tho, it has way more racing history. I would also hope we get one of the nordic countries one day! Lots of Finnish drivers. The list of "permanent ones" would then be: - Malaysia 🇲🇾 - China 🇨🇳 - Australia 🇦🇺 - Spain 🇪🇸 - Germany 🇩🇪 - Monaco 🇲🇨 - Austria 🇦🇹 - Monza 🇮🇹 - Spa 🇧🇪 - Silverstone 🇬🇧 - Singapore 🇸🇬 - Suzuka 🇯🇵 - Canada 🇨🇦 - Mexico 🇲🇽 - United States 🇺🇸 - Brazil 🇧🇷 - Abu Dhabi 🇦🇪 That's a total of 17, so you could have 8 GPs rotate and that would be your France, Portugal, Hungary (which could almost be permanent!), Netherlands, Turkey, Korea (I really hope it returns), Bahrain (one of my favorite tracks but I understand it would probably rotate some times), Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, more American GPs, more European GPs and of course the likes of Vietnam which was the topic of this video. @@luislicona386 I'm not sure I would have China, has it ever had a really good race? I would also prefer Bahrain over Abu Dhabi. Bahrain isn’t the best but it’s better than Abu Dhabi. Mind you I would want Bahrain to alternate between the two versions of the track we used last year as that would make it more appealing. Singapore might have a lot of safety cars but the racing is poor so I wouldn’t have that every year. It’s not even got the unique aspect of a night race to itself anymore and Baku provides both a nicer looking and better street race imho. And not sure Malaysia would want to host it every year as with more Asian races and the novelty going away they struggled to sell tickets, being an occasional GP might appeal to them more as it would be a better marketing tool
