Catching BIG yabbies with hand lines.
Ғылым және технология
In Australia, we call these guys yabbies, or yabbys depending on how you prefer to spell them. Their scientific name is Cherax Destructor, a name that suits them quite well as a nip on the finger from a decent sized yabby would be quite destructive!
These are a warm water species of shellfish which are most active during the warmer months, unlike their cousins the freshwater crayfish which is more of a cold water species, being more active in the winter months.
In Australia we call them yabbies, but in the United States they call their version of yabbies, crawfish or crawdads. So for any American person reading this, and watching this video wondering what a yabby is, it is a similar shellfish to your crawdad, or crawfish.
I know they also have crayfish in America as well but I am not sure where they fit into the equation!
Anyhow, using string with meat attached is easily my favourite way to catch yabbies. The old 'meat and string' technique.
This is where so many of us started our love of not only yabbying, but also of fishing in general. Catching yabbies with meat and string is where I cut my teeth in the humble world of yabbying.

Do any of these yabbies change to a blue color when you keep them in clean water?
We used to use shanks for bait on baling twine way back when I was a kid Robbie, worked a treat, and we had a dam that produced absolute monster yabbies 😁
That fly slap on the leg towards the endwas fuckin' gross Robbie but had me in stitches mate bwhahaha 🤣🤣🤣
Where can i get a video camera glasses robbie?

To Robbie from Rob from Sydney, I’m heading down to Burrinjuck dam, down near Canberra... I’ve tried a lot of different ways to get Yabbies there though haven’t had luck with traps or anything of the like, do you have any tips or tricks for me? I might give this one a go but don’t think I have your finesse 😂
This how we used to catch them as kids, we would use a coat hanger and the net bag that onions come in, sometimes we would use wool for line but it would rot pretty quick and break after a while
Lol I freaked out at the flys hahahaha ;) thanks m8

Yabbies are always great fun to catch - I'm having no luck catching any shrimp with my shrimp nets this year so far, any tips or suggestions? I usually put it in the Campaspe near grass or weed beds, still nothing.
@robbiefishing

Hey mate, I have never tried catching shrimp in the Campaspe, but in the Ovens I like the green plastic shrimp nets with a bit of meat for bait. Sorry I am not much help, but I not very familiar with your waterway sorry.

@robbiefishing

Thanks buddy. I check them quite often and wait to see if the line pulls tight.
apparently its gonna rain up to 150 ml this cod opening
Just curious ,have you ever used ladies stocking material over the meat ball (of whatever type)? I'm thinking the claws may stick to the stocking more tightly than just raw meat. Hence give a better chance to get to the net without letting go. Great video as usual mate, thanks for taking the time to film and post. Pete

Hi. I am cho who grows yabby in a my small fish tank. Although i am asian, my yabby is from Australia. so i am interested in your video. we call yabby a CRAYFISH. to be precise, crawfish in this video is called BLUE CLAW. there are many members in my crayfish club. we are enthusiasts who grow crayfish. we trade crayfish at an expensive price. also we love yabby which from Australia. we hope to see video about marron, murray, astacopsis(tasmania crayfish), koonac. thank you so much, i am waiting your reply.
So many houseflies there. Have a video on housefly catching with a vacuum cleaner, insect zapper or rat glue on sticks with rotting matter to attract.
I remember the video from 3 years ago.. grouse.

Do you always have such good luck in the middle of the day? When are they most active?
Nice work Robbie. What does a yabbie have in common with a chinaman that has been hit by a bus? They are both crushed asians.

plain sewing coton works better wrapped many times round the meat so the yabbies dont skunk you and take your bait.
