Catch basins and yard grading to solve a very wet backyard. Part 2 - Finishing & making it pretty

Ойын-сауық

Hello, this is Tom from Tye Landscaping and we love solving drainage problems where you are not allowed to discharge to the street or the water has to be contained on your property.
This nice family is having a problem with standing water. Three of their neighbors are higher than them and all their storm water is coming to this property. The town will not allow any of this water to discharge to the street or even the front yard.
So far we’ve completed the core and tap and we are attached to the city infrastructure. We’ve also tied in the 3 backyard downspouts and the sump pump discharge.
Here is our plan. In this video we will start at the first 20 inch catch basin and install the rest of the pipe, catch basins and inlets. We will grade and make swales to direct rain runoff to the new system. We will add a layer of top soil to help get the new lawn established. Then finish with seed, starter fertilizer and top with straw.

@@tyelandscapinganddrainage Tom and family, thanks for responding. Love how you and your wife are such a great team together. Wish I had someone like you in my neck of the woods. I’m a former New Yorker who moved to South Carolina. I have an area in my front yard that stays wet longer than a day and I am not sure if a French drain would be best there. I know the property has good drainage pitch because you can see the water running off in a heavy rain. It’s just one section that has me a bit concerned. Keep up the great work!

I haven't seen blue 4 inch before, is it a city requirement? I wonder if you can build up the dirt by those neighbors so water doesnt plunge into the yard?

  • @tyelandscapinganddrainage

Hi Design Build. Not a requirement. That's SDR 35. Much stronger than thin wall and you still get the full range of fittings. It's my go to 4 inch pipe. It used to be green. They made it blue a couple years ago. You cannot change the grade or level of your yard within 10 feet of the property line in this town. Have a great week, Tom

So they won't let you tie into storm runoff but they'll let you tie into sewer drain? Hmmm sounds like they'll be paying extra for their sewer fees and in big rain events the city sewer will become overwhelmed. I should say in Pennsylvania you cannot tie storm runoff into sewer.

  • @tyelandscapinganddrainage

I think we have a misunderstanding with the terms we use here in Jersey. The storm sewer is different from the sanitary sewer. Storm sewer are curb drains and is for rainwater. Sanitary sewer system is sewage that goes to the treatment facility. It's not legal to tie into the sanitary sewer system. The town gave us permission to tie into the storm sewer pipe that runs between 2 catch basins.
