‘Catastrophically bad’ Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu fired by Putin | Mark Galeotti

“He’s proven to be a pretty catastrophically bad defence minister in wartime.”
Former defence minister Sergei Shoigu is a personal friend of Putin and so was saved from being dismissed from his regime entirely despite being unpopular with his troops, says Mark Galeotti.

I really don't read anything more into this removal of Shoigu than what meets the eye and obvious explanation that Putin has come to realize this war is going to go on for years. Moving Shoigu to the head of security council is more than just a polite way to get him out of the way, as that is what Shoigu is actually good at... he is a master politician and was never a military type. The new Defense minister now has the role of 'serving' the military by making sure they get everything they need. The most important military role inside the armed forces is now the Chief of staff - currently held by Gerasimov... It will be interesting to see if he keeps that job. Bottom line, this is NOT good news for Ukraine, just the opposite unfortunately in my view.

On actual news because Shougu's cushy appointment to another easier and equally as prominent position is a big nothing burger. Ukraine has received all the aid they requested and then some, now they are crying they don't have the manpower to fight and if anyone wasn't a complete dull said this was the case when the US Congress didn't agree to send more aid last year. The problem Ukraine has isn't bullets, supplies, or money issues. They don't have a population willing to fight.

Yes ... the Ukrainians are probably very unhappy at Shoigu's departure. He was a major asset in the defeat of Russia; well, more specifically, his INCOMPETENCE was a major asset costing the Russians 100's of billions of rubles and a major swath of the young men that will be critical in Russia's survival, if only demographically. Bringing in someone who has no hands-on military experience can only turn-out to be a worse disaster. By comparison, Stalin (who Putin models himself after supposedly) had a huge cadre of competent generals and could afford to sack aka liquidate. He was willing to listen to the and take advice from several, notably Zhukov. Same meat-wave attacks aka slaughters, but well-directed, exploiting something they has massive amounts of - men and materiel.
