International pressure on Putin stops his ATACMS retaliation strikes | Michael Bociurkiv
"Ukraine has long since the start of the war, claimed that it needs to have the capability to strike legitimately legitimate military targets deep inside Russia, military bases where those long range missiles that are destroying Kharkiv, another Ukrainian cities are."
Western deterrence and red lines from Beijing have stopped Putin from retaliating over Ukraine's use of Western weapons on attack sites in Russia, Michael Bociurkiv tells Frontline on #timesradio

As Sarah Paine (from the US Naval war college) says, anyone who thinks sanctions don't work, should take a look at North Korea, that is the long run of sanctions just losing 2% annualy over time. North Korea was the richer part of the country back before the war. Russia is ultimately headed to North Korea status. Also let Ukraine keep hitting the refineries and then see how the economy goes.

To be honest that is what I suspected and it is the smart thing to do. Even if ukraine had been allowed to strike russian territory this whole time, there is a certain level of distance that a significant buildup of troops will always be able to make before they are stopped no matter how good your defenses are, and ukraine simply does not have a big enough surplus of weapons to eliminate a 50k troop buildup. If they had built their defenses right up to the border they still most likely would have been pushed past, or at least destroyed by artillery. So it was a smart move regardless

Why does it take so long for Western leaders to deal with autocrats like Putin. Will they ever learn that it's only strength that autocrats back down from? Is it now too late for Ukraine?
@larrymitchell3502
22 күн бұрын
No, it is not. The slowdown in armaments from the USA in particular certainly impacted the war. Ukraine _has_ suffered from shortages of artillery shells and missles. It has neither been able to stop some Russian advances nor act opportunistically against Russian targets. Kharkiev and other large population centers have been repeatedly bombed as a result. It has substituted drones, FPV and otherwise against Russian armor, making Russia pay most dearly for its relatively small gains. Ukraine has also successfully attacked petroleum production inside Russia with larger drones possibly of their own design. In my estimation, the result has been a prolongation of the conflict. Russia is still the 'second best military force in Ukraine.' Its attrition rate in personnel and equipment has remained horrendous. The Russian people are experiencing the 'three-day Special Military Operation' continuation well into the second year. Western economic sanctions continue to drive up prices in Russia. The spigot is back to full flow or nearly so with the Continuing Economic Resolution passed and signed into law in March will be in effect until after the November elections. I think both Trump and the Republican party will lose. Biden could have Democratic majorities in both House and Senate. Even if he does not, enough Republican Senators are in favor of Ukraine military aid and if some hardline Republican House members are driven from office the world could see more accross-the-aisle cooperation in 2025. Note: I'm a 'hardline' Democrat - not in the sense of the extremity of my views; in the clear understanding that autocrats and tyrants must be dealt with from positions of courage and strength. As is true of spoiled, bratty children who are used to getting their way by acting out, adult autocrats and tyrants are pretty much the same. They must be met with sound judgement, mental fortitude, and the willingness to stand our ground - based on excellent intelligence and understanding of their essential nature: that of bullies.

The argument that a small % of US military budget has destroyed a large amount of Russian armour: Significantly more than half of all support for Ukraine was not given by the US. Some countries have given more than 100% of their annual defence budgets. So yes, the US is getting a cheap win, but it's not because the war is cheap, it's because others are paying!
@imrobertgrayson

Firstly NATO is getting hammered in Ukraine. Secondly it's only cheap if you don't place any value on the Ukrainian lives that are being wasted on this war. Of course the advocates of this war in the west DON'T care about Ukrainians at all. It's just a piece on the chessboard to them.

You are minimizing the contributions of the US. The US has sent by far the most military aid to Ukraine. The EU sent the most total aid to Ukraine. But not buy a huge margin like you’re implying. I would dare say on a per citizen basis the US has sent more total aid to Ukraine than the EU. Besides, I think his point was that the US military is so huge that only a fraction of the annual budget could destroy Russia. The same cannot be said for the EU.

I wished media would stop patting themselves on the back for asking "good questions". We are not in school anymore. Especially with obvious questions that are not in any way "ground breaking" but the main point of the whole interview - i.e. something you have established so the interview could take place in the first place.
We see many headlines on Times Radio that Putin is finished etc. He doesnt seem to be going anywhere.

Since Day 1 Australia hasn’t put any restrictions on where Ukraine can use its donated weapons and munitions. What is the intellectual deficit in NATO that it has taken more than two years to realise the same provision as Australia’s?

The issue is that it doesn't take half a day to push the button.
It only takes on assumption one mistake to go from a localized regional war to full on world war 3 and from conventional weapons to Nuclear weapons. We have one David Cameron now thinking we should have our troops in Ukraine the man who gave us the brexit vote now how much confidence have you in him sorting this situation out?.

I don't agree with the 'dent in reputation' argument against seizing assets. The alternative, allowing a criminal to retain assets, immune from use for reparations, is a 'dent' in one's principles of justice.
