Cataracts Explained Simply - Symptoms, Causes, Treatments

What are cataracts in the eyes? Dr. Allen explains cataracts, reviewing the symptoms, causes and treatment options for cataracts. Learn more about cataract surgery, implant options and tips for success here: • Cataracts Explained Si...
Cataracts in your eyes are when a clear structure within the eye (called the crystalline lens) begins to change and become opaque. The symptoms of cataracts often include blurred vision and glare. What causes cataract in your eyes is multifactorial, including genetics and environmental factors. However, the most common type of cataract formation is termed an "age related cataract" as they often occur with age. Treatment for cataracts is primarily through cataract surgery, where a surgeon breaks up the cataract within the eye, removes it and then replaces the cataract with a plastic lens implant.

About This Video:
In this video Joseph J. Allen, OD, FAAO, Diplo ABO, discusses cataracts in your eyes, the symptoms they cause and cataract surgery. If you are researching the symptoms of cataracts in eyes, we will go over how they cause blurred vision as well as glare. What causes cataracts in your eyes is complex and multifactorial, but we do review some of the major players and ways to prevent cataracts. Cataract treatment involves having cataract surgery, which is largely a safe and efficient procedure. In this video briefly review cataract surgery as we will go more in depth on that subject in the next videos in the series.

I actually just had "that talk" with my eye doctor -- again. The thought of the surgery makes me shudder and I don't know how I will get over the fear of someone cutting my eye. I've gone from soft contact lens to hard lens to back to soft lens because I have issues with lens movement, glare and focusing. I went today with my hard contact (the 3rd one) to a soft lens and will try two soft lenses in a few days. I'm hoping this will do the trick for now anyway. Going into a hospital for surgery during covid is even more frightening. Thank you for this video and I will definitely watch the rest of this series.

I'm 17 and always thought I had an astigmatism because of how lights looked especially at night, but when I went to the eye doctor he told me that I had 20/15 vision and cataracts! He said they're very small and probably won't get bigger, but it was a very surprising discovery!

I had posterior polar cataracts, a rare kind that were pressing on my retinas and posterior capsule. A tear was a very real possibility, so my optometrist immediately called one of the top 2 ophthalmology surgeons in my area. He saw me right away and scheduled surgery. I was amazed at how quick and painless the operations were (not done at the same time)! When I went back to work the next day, I saw a fine pattern in wallpaper that had previously looked plain. I saw a painting that had looked very dull and drab; now it was full of bright red, rust and brown colors.I just could not get over what I saw now without the cataracts!

In October 2022 I found out that I had severe cataracts, at the age of 43. My sister, dad and grandma also had cataracts in their early 40s. I got my right eye operated in January 2023 and my left eye three weeks later, and it has literally changed my life. Before the surgery I was barely functionable, and even needed my 12 year old daughter to guide me when out walking. If anyone is doubting about getting the surgery, don't. The operation was painless and lasted 15 minutes, and the results are amazing.

Agree, worth doing. I was 52 when i had cataracts so went to a specialist (£1,200 each eye) rather than the NHS here in the UK (NHS = National Health Service) which is free medical care which comes out of our wages, NI = National Insurance) . Didn't want our NHS to do my glasses incase they wasn't that good! Privately & i was glad i did as the person was well experienced. I could see sooo much clearer after, marble surfaces & concrete was really sharp a day after. Andi didn't need glasses anymore! Wore glasses since i was 5. I could see further now without any blurring, plus don't need glasses for reading...it's really crisp after the op. I needed glasses to read a number plate for driving & now i don't,but do wear glasses as past 23 meters it isn't as sharp. It's 22 meters to read a car reg plate to be legal to drive....so glasses will be & is better for road signs much further ahead.

The most helpful part is the discussion of when to have the surgery. I waited a little too late because I have only one good eye. My cataract was very dense. My doctor used laser in the surgery as she said that involved less risk. Now I see great 20-30 at a distance without glasses. I use reading glasses for close up. I did get a new set of bifocals for when I want to see 20-20 at a distance.

Im 48 years old, and I was recently diagnosed with cateracts of both my eyes. My mother had cataract surgery when she was about 5 years older than I am now, and she had tremendous success with her surgery. I inherited severe myopia from her, and she has been wearing very slim glasses for the past 25+ years since her surgery, along with sunglasses for photosensitivity. She has been very supportive of me and my diagnosis, and hopes that I will qualify for eye surgery soon, because it changed her vision for the better and believes I will have the same transformation. I'm pretty nervous about the inevitable surgery, but if I can see even better than I ever could, I think I'm ready to take the chance.

Hi..I just found your channel. Last Saturday I experienced a PVD evidenced by multiple floaters and the sensation that pepper was being sprinkled in front of my eyes! I went on Easter Sunday for an emergency eval at a major NYC eye hospital and was diagnosed with a retinal tear. Laser surgery was performed preventing a detachment as there was already considerable vitreous fluid under the tear. I came home to find your videos on You-Tube. Wow!! They are awesome. I just wanted to extend a huge thank you for the outstanding public service your videos are providing. I have been binge watching them and your presentations are not only informative but entertaining. I have been recommending them to my friends and colleagues. Surprisingly, for me the most informative part of this video was the bit about water falls! I was already familiar with what causes cataracts and their treatment. I am 67 years old, and have noticed difficulty when driving into a setting sun (or less often a sunrise!). So I have decided to get an eye doctor to check me out. Thank you for your interesting presentations. I find the mechanics of vision and refraction very interesting. The more one learns about the eyes and how they work the more amazing it becomes. One thing that makes my mind boggle is how the eyes coordinate with each other. For example, if you look at an object, then tilt your head to one side, one eye has to move upwards and the other downwards to maintain fixation on the object. Yet they do it without us even thinking about it. Incredible.

So grateful for your videos Dr. Allen! It’s very difficult to find reputable information on the internet, your channel is my go to whenever I have eye concerns. I’ve had 4 Retinal detachments over the space of a year and a half. I’ve had 2 vitrectomy surgeries on my right eye, first was with gas and the second was with silicone oil which my optometrist is hoping to remove in the coming months. I’m due to have cataract surgery once the oil has been removed which will hopefully help me see a lot better. This series is perfect timing! It’ll be great to have a better understanding of what’s to come with my cataracts! 😄

Great video Dr Allen. I had my Cataracts ‘done’ some time ago in my 40s, earlier than later. I also needed YAG laser treatment on my left eye post surgery. I opted to remain Myopic and my Astigmatism has remained as well. The left eye was done considerably earlier than my right and for years I noted colour perception problems. Operations were very straightforward and all well.

Would you do a video on “pressure” on the eye? My optometrist said my R eye is 21, my L eye is 24..and both need to be rechecked in another year. Thank you for the wonderful information in all of your videos. I'll be 70 in July and had cataract surgery in both eyes two years ago. I had been informed, for about 5 years prior, that my prescription at the time would not clear up my vision, completely, until I get cataract surgery. Both eyes are now better for distance (not 100%), and I need readers for close up. My sunglasses are bifocal to accommodate distance and reading. I was put under both times (one week apart) so I felt nothing during surgery and am surprised to read others felt pain. In one of my checkups, they zapped my right eye with a laser because I was still experiencing cloudiness. That took care of the problem

I am told that I have extremely early signs of cataract in one eye and to wait and have things monitored of the coming years, I did ask my eye man if this could have been caused by chemotherapy which I had some years ago, he did not know for sure but thought it was not out of the question. I was also very interested hearing that sight can be corrected for age related long sight! I did not think that was possible, I find glasses a menace now in later life not having had any sight issues in earlier life, maybe one day I can give them a miss......maybe! Thank you again.

My doctor told me I'm too young at 65? I believe she was lying because when I got my new glasses I still couldn't see so she told me I had cataracts instead of admitting her nurse screwed up my exam and gave me the wrong prescription and did not want to refund or remake my glasses, after I spent $2,000 for two pairs, my 4 year old glasses work better. She told me after re-examing me that they were a bit off but not enough to matter. I asked her to make them as good as she can and she got upset and told me it wouldn't matter because I have cataracts developing. I asked her about surgery and she said I'm too young.

None of us had the implant as they weren't being used until a year after I was born. @@nicolestevens1577 I'm 23 yo and I was born with a cataract on my left eye without any of my parent having cataract. My left optical nerve has gone badly during the formation of my eye and it has left a stain on my eye-lens. My right eye is however completely normal. I didn't got the surgery back when I was younger because it was kind of an heavy one for a child and my parents wanted to let me make that choice myself. Since then I haven't gone through surgery because I feel my eyesight is fine and doesn't prevent me from doing the things I want to do. I wear glasses since I can remember but I don't consider them as something bad, just a sort of extension of myself. I do have to control my eyesight quite regularly (every year or so) with an ophthalmologist to detect if it decreases. In which case I might have to go through surgery. But that day hasn't come yet and I'm glad for that. The more I wait, the more sofisticated lens prosthesis will become and the better it will be after surgery and for the rest of my life. Btw please excuse my english if I made mistakes while I was writting this, as english is not my native language :D

Agreed! I was born with cataracts in both eyes, but was not diagnosed until I was 40 years old. I haven't had surgery because I have anterior cataracts and my doctor said I should put off surgery as long as possible due to the risks. My brain had already adjusted for the cataracts so my eyesight is pretty good, however, I have a lot of problems with glare from sunlight - I need a hat or visor along with glasses to see well outdoors. I wish someone would talk more about congenital cataracts and especially anterior cataracts.

@@heatherydew3361 I normally get prescription sunglasses (mostly for distance and astigmatism). I believe they are polarized, I need a style that is more closed on the sides, though. I am planning to get my eyes checked again and buy new glasses soon. I will be super careful to make sure that they are polarized on the back side - I watched his other video on sunglasses. Funny, even eyeglasses without corrective lenses have worked pretty well for me, I am thinking that I will buy a pair of polarized sunglasses without a prescription to travel with as a back-up. Do you find that certain colored lenses work better for you? I got the brown tint instead of green tint, while I can still see indoors, I am not sure that they are helping outdoors as much.

@@sunway1374 There is a type of catract that effects people under the age of 50. I believe it is called a subcapsular cataract. Some of the causes of this is from extreme nearsightedness, trauma to the eye, use of corticosteroids, and over exposure to radiation and ultraviolet rays. We seem to believe Cataracts only affect seniors, but while it mostly does, it can form at an earlier age for some.

I had surgery in both eyes two years ago. Mine were caused by medication due to repeated corneal ulcers and one developed very quickly, to the point that I couldn’t see at all out of that eye. Both procedures were very quick and I had no problems - I followed the post-op procedures to the letter. My lenses were mono vision - one for reading and one for distance. I still wear one contact for reading occasionally for fine detail but not always necessary. Excellent video as always.

What did shock me was that mine advanced to the need for bilateral surgery within a year and a half. Can you speak about rapid onset cataracts? Are there factors related to that that are different than slow growing? No steroids. Other than occasional flonase. No trauma. (But I am a lifelong radiographer. But very low lifetime doses.)

I waited too long to get mine done, then Covid hit, and the cataract in my left eye became hypermature. Once I got the surgery, I had a lot of issues healing, and after 3 months, I still have a lot of glare and halos, blurry vision, and negative dysphotopsia. With some eye drops (difluprednate ophthalmic emulsion), the swelling went down, and I was able to get my right eye done about a week ago. This one is going very well. I had my 1-week post-op today, and vision was 20/25 in that eye. The moral of this story is don't wait too long.

I am 52 and had 4 detached retinas in 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997. Left, right, left, right. After wearing contacts for 27 years I had to stop in 2011 because of severe dry eyes. I started wearing glasses at age 8. The last contacts I wore were -14.5. -16. My problem is with double vision. When I got new glasses made they under corrected them. But unevenly. So I think they created a lazy left eye. So I see out of the left lower and sort of tilted. My surgeon said I do have cataracts and I could get surgery when ever I would like to. I have plans to have a cataract evaluation but I’m so nervous about getting the surgery. I’ve read that the worse your eyes are the more likely to have a detached retina after. So scared. Plus I get horrible migraines from everything including meds and anesthesia. So I know I will have a violently one after for at least a week. But the detached retina risk is what terrifies me the most. Is there more risk for detachment for different lenses? My doctor said years ago that with the retina buckles my retinas are stronger now than before but I think he knew how high my anxiety is and was trying to calm me down.
