Catalan Vote For Independence Sends Spain Into Chaos (HBO)

Catalans voted in a bitterly-contested referendum on Sunday which descended into chaos. The national government says the poll is illegal and its result will be dismissed. Schools became battlegrounds as Spanish police used force to try and shut down the ballot. VICE News' Phoebe Greenwood followed parents and a student independence activist as they fought to keep their polling stations open.

I am not Spaniard, I am Dominican. I do not know or understand the current socio/political nor economic situation of the country right now, but if Catalan gets out of Spain, will they even be able to support themselves? Is it even a smart economic move? Will they be recognized by the UN or the European Union? There is a lot to take into account before going out there and deciding to separate from a country and creating a new one

The journalist said something that is... well, let say, she has been missinformed. Goverments, in countries like Spain or US, can't declare illegality. It's de court's work. The Superior Court of justice of Catalonia considered it illegal. The court ordered the police to act so then an illegal act wouldn't took place. It would be a good idea if you interview not only independentists but also people who is not absorbed by nationalists minds. It is incredible to see how right wing nationalists in US are something like evil but right wing nationalists in Spain (like the former catalan goverment) are shown like victims.

Vice should be better than this... These short videos are dangerous because you are giving the world incredibly limited views on what is actually going on. I always argued that the work vice does is amazing, and kept doing so when they got heat for selling out to HBO. Now i see what vice is becoming. Instead of making proper documentaries like they used to, they upload as much content as possible without the same care that they seemed to implement. this is very dangerous. This video is one-sided journalism that can be considered and used as propaganda. This conflict in spain goes back decades if not centuries, and there are many sides and perspectives to take into account. How is one random guy they found in the protest enough to create an educated view on it? Sorry for the rant but as a spaniard and as somebody who loved vice this is very sad...

I can't remember exactly, but the spanish constitution constitutes that you can't have a referendum, unless you don't have a 90 or so percent in the parliement. Yes, exactly, Spain, Catalonia, Basque county, Grenada. The whole of spain will lose because of this.

I remember when Vice was a good source of unbiased information. As a Spaniard trust me when I say this is stupidly biased by the word of a foreigner that has no idea what this is all about. You don't show how the "peaceful protestors" attacked the police (they even forced a couple of units off Tarragona by throwing rocks), the catalonian police turning against the national police or how the votes had such an stupid regulation that there are people that even voted 4 times, etc... I personally don't care that much if they want to leave. But they once signed a constitution where this all figures as illegal in the first articles. This just has to be done right. If they want to leave we have to edit our constitution, and for that all Spain has the right to vote. Then after that they can do whatever they want. Catalonia wouldn't be what it is now without Spain, I bet it would have even been French now if it wasn't for us.

The vote was doomed to fail. A vote that is not supported by the Spanish government will make it so that only those radical enough go to vote (those in favor of independence). This obviously skews the results and makes the vote illegitimate. By going through with the vote in spite of the Spanish government opposition in my opinion was a calculated political move to insite divisiveness and give a misleading impression of how many Catalonians actually are in favor of independence. In my opinion it is ok for there to be votes and negotiations but only if it is something agreed upon by society at large.

if catalonia wants independence then they should do it legally rather than illegally. the majority of catalonia actually doesnt want to be independent. if catalonia does become independent then it would be a massive hit to the already terrible spanish economy. a lot of tourist revenue comes from catalonia. speaking of tourist revenue the catalonians themselves are being hit hard due to all the chaos happening there. less and less tourists are coming thus businesses are getting hit hard who rely on said tourism thus majority want all this to end and want to go on peacefully with their lives. finally, our ancestors have spilled so much blood and so much sweat to unite spain as one to fight against the muslim moors and do just divide it like this is an insult to all that work. what i fully agree with is that the police have been far out of line. theyre using extreme force against mostly peaceful protesting which is a big n-no.

How a feeling can be more important than peace and stability? Many countries had serious economical problems, unity and collaboration is the best alternative to overcome them. The issue is not past governments, racial confrontation or migration, the problem is not in the past, the problem is in the present and it has an economical nature. The hole world is suffering the consequences of the last word economical crisis. Division and conflict are seen everywhere, fragmentation will only make life harder for everyone. The destruction of the system will not guarantee better conditions. It's better to think of ways to transform and improve rather than break and rebuild. It is hard to imagine California exiting USA, they could have many good reasons to do so, but the sense of unity makes America strong and all Americans know this. There is now difference in this sense with Spain or European Union. Even many people in London, Scotland and Northern Ireland can understand that strength resides in numbers and that's why they don't want to leave the EU. As a note I must say that all Spanish people suffered Franco's regime and the consequences of the civil war, not only the Catalans.

The autonomy of cataluña benefit the political class or the citizens? The autonomy of the Catalan government has been harmful for Catalan society, for Spain and for Europe. Catalan politicians misused the autonomy to: support major corruption acts, create an antidemocratic political elite, create more debt, exclude citizens that did not support the separation, teach Catalan nationalist propaganda in schools, deny social monetary aid for citizens that don't support the separatist movement, create social unrest, unsettle the economy and divide the society. Cataluña government has been pushing democracy backwards.

So if a bunch of politicians in an area break the law and use a bunch of lefties to promote their views for an independence matter they will have to face the consequences, don't you think? it is not like the area they live in does not belong also to the rest of Spaniards who pay with their taxes for their social services, etc. also.

Ghastly Grinner I love your theories, truth is all big Catalan companies left Catalonia this last week, facts. Catalonia exports half of their products to the rest of Spain, another 25% to the EU, we are their clients if prices get higher due to taxes after puting a border in the middle we will buy other products we will take our money out of their banks, and they will go broke, their market is Spain because they are Spanish companies located in a Spanish region, no one will be left there if Catalonia breaks away from its market. What's the alternative? Lower the currency so they can export to us cheaper and keep lower prices, the problem is that would make inflation explode and prices inside of Catalonia would skyrocket consumption would lower and so would GDP, a China without the Chinese population. Catalonia takes in energy from other parts of Spain, our infrastructure and companies provide the region with energy they produce very very little, imagine the prices and their consequences if they leave. Catalan companies are in Madrid's stock exchange, most of the banks and finances operating in Catalonia do so in Madrid, there's no central bank in Barcelona, no financial institutions, their banks left one day after the referendum, there's no major bank there left as of today!. Very important companies located in Catalonia like Gas Natural were located there by the government to boost Barcelona's economy, we are very stupid you know we boosted their economy on purpose with policies. Those companies planted there will not stay under any circumstances, in fact they are leaving. The only ones that still remain there are the indutrial ones, why? Because they need more time to move machinery and factories but they've announced they will move out already. Catalonia is the region of Spain we did protectionism is the region that traded with our colonies, the region we boosted industry in the industrial revolution, but it is part of our market, in a market you need buyers and it is us that buy Catalan products the factories and companies located there are located there because it's Spanish soil and their buyers are the Spaniards, the minute they leave no company will remain outside the market where they have their customers. *It's really simple, again facts, I'm just explaining what is happening, it is happening, not a prediction.*

That's absolutely true. If you watch again yesterday's Puigdemont's speech you'll notice that he doesn't talk about injured people anymore but ASSISTED. It was a dirty move by Catalonian government on the voting day to update the "casualty numbers" every few minutes to spread fear and chaos through the social networks. Even a pro-independence polititian, Jordi Sanchez (from ANC), dared to say that very night, without fact checking, that "Europe hadn't seen so many injured people since World War II".

They've been playing the victimism card for years andwent forward with all this referendum farce knowing very well that their followers would face police force. They USED that people and their genuine illusions to get the picture they wanted and make international press go mad about the matter. Quite Machiavellian stuff.

Just because someone "protests" doesn't mean what they are doing is sane. Organizing an illegal referendum is a bad sign for democracy too don't you think? You have all these little villages, regions and neighborhoods around the world who just want to secede from the country they are part of or declare independence. When does this stop? Now some have compared their situation to colonization of African countries and South East Asian countries. I have yet to see any pictures from Spain showing businesses or buildings with signs saying "No Catalans" allowed. I have yet to see any violence or discrimination against people because they are from Catalonia. You see the problem is a human being (being dreadful) one. The human being has to hate and divide. It doesn't matter who. The goal is to band together and hate. Find a common enemy. If there were a bunch of Muslim refugees there, these people would all unite to hate them. If there were a bunch of blacks there, they would all unite to hate all those blacks, and make them the scapegoats for something. But there is not a lot of that, so lets find ways to hate each other. The same thing with the Irish. Not a lot of blacks there and foreigners, or Muslims, so, again, as human beings are, let's find a way to create tensions and fight and kill and hate. Oh shit! We are all Christians, so there are no Muslims to hate... Let's find our differences among us Christians... I mean this is starting to get stupid. All these separatists are starting to be annoying. There are real problems in life. Catalonia is not an oppressed region subject to slavery as far as I know. So if people are really bored they should go to a bullfighting get together or something... Even if they got their independence, within a month, among themselves they will start fighting. Because now east Catalonia is going to say that they are different from West Catalonia, and they want to leave Catalonia... Never ending story... Mankind needs someone, a community, a group to differentiate itself from to always serve as the scapegoat for everything that is wrong in ones life...

When the government is too scared to let people vote on an issue they care about. That government no longer represents them. They didn't need to grant independence, if there are good reasons to withhold it then you use that to justify why the referendum doesn't matter. However destroying ballot boxes and assaulting old people for exercising free speech is wholely different from just the merits of separatism.

Should the EU and the NATO do something like what they did to Yugoslavia two decades ago? Or do they dare to call themselves defender of democracy? These powers should wage a war against the Spanish regime to defend the purity of democracy. Catalonia, the Kosovo of Spain, shall remain as the medal of that democracy. I am not from Spain or Catalonia. I don't think I have the legitimacy or knowledge to make judgement whether the independence is legitimate. I am just stalled by the reaction of the world, by the manipulation of the politicians, by the hypocrisy of the Spanish/ European democracy.

A purposefully one-sided view of what happened on Oct.1st. The following should have been clearly highlighted to provide the whole picture to your viewer: For a decade now, the Catalonian government has been injecting ideological secessionist fire though its heavily-subsidized media and the education system - and it has yielded results. Hundred of thousands of otherwise ordinary, well-meaning people became radicalized in the grounds of fabricated grievances against the Spanish state, one of the world's most stable democracies and a de facto federation that equips Catalonia with plenty of space to deepen and enjoy its national identity. The regional authorities put all these people in danger by brainwashing them, and now the police is blamed for enforcing a judicial ruling - that so-called referendum was hastily approved by a waffle-slim majority in the regional parliament and is against the Spanish constitution, that has otherwise brought nicely together the country after decades of the Franco authoritarian regime. Needless to say, the police action shown in this video is as regrettable as shameful, yet the local authorizes are to ultimately to blame.

The video was released on Oct 10 and by that time I would expect a more full-fledged review, such as the pro-union protest during the weekend in which thousands of hundreds of ppl have shown up. I also heard people are saying that some of the bloody and cruel scenes from earlier pro-independence protest were partially made up. For example, the women who claimed that her fingers were broken one by one by the Spanish police has over-stated the incident. What's more astonishing is some places have a polling turnout rates of more than 100%, meaning fraud happened. I don't know if those are true or false statements, but would like to see a thorough investigation video about that. But perhaps those are not provoking and eye-catching enough for Vice to do it.

They didn't let the police do their job, and they throw things to the police... what did you expect??? People outside of Spain only see what independent want you to see... cause the are the ones who are doing the noise, they are not even the half of the population of Cataluña.. They only govern for the half of the population. Do you know what it means??? They are forcing half of the catalanes to leave their country, that is crazy. For do that at least have to be 2/3 of population or something like this, is an important decision for them. They say they want to vote, i want to vote too, but not ilegal shit.
