You are reviewing here and reacting to, one of the greatest and original performers of all time. His body of work isn’t large, but the work he did produce was masterful, this being one, but lesser known. “Moonshadow“ is one of my all-time favorite songs.

Great reaction. He always put so much emotion into his performances. I agree with you about often needing to watch live performances. I often say you can judge a song by a recording, but to truly appreciate the abilities of a performer you need to see them perform live.

  • @googlepigs7027

You should always listen to the studio album version of the song, because : 1. It is the closest to the original vision of it that the musician(s) were able to achieve, and they can really take their time to get it as close to the vision as possible. 2. Musicians on the road -- touring musicians -- are often very tired, not feeling very well, and often just burned out from playing the same songs over and over, often until they cant stand them, and so they do a poor job in comparison to the energy they had when they were excited and inspired by the newness and freshness of the song. 3. The sound system characteristics very widely from venue to venue, whereas once again, in the studio, they have far greater control over shaping the sounds exactly as they wish them to be. This all adds up to you having the closest version to the artists vision possible. 💝 Fortunately, Cat Stevens was usually an awesome live performer.

He also sang it life In Chili, in 2015. As a grown up man, when his voice is more broken, not that strong, almost bitter voice anymore. I think it became either more touching, I like that version more than this from his younger years.

Try listening to Cat Stevens’ early albums as they are truly beautiful. Also, for another tremendous singer songwriter from that period, try Love And Affection (there is an excellent video of her singing it) and also The Weakness In Me by Joan Armatrading. She was really something at that time.

As great as this live performance is, the studio version has a female backing vocal during the forte section that is so beautiful and sexy. She doesn't sing lyrics, she just hums and wails as if in tranquil ecstasy from Cat's words. Well worth a listen.

Hi Dani, This is a bit of a plug, as an Aussie i would like you to play a couple of songs or if not one by a band i grew up with here in Australia. The band is Crowded House, who had couple of hits in the States in the mid 80's. The lead singer/songwriter Neil Finn is now lead singer with Fleetwood Mac, if you could choose one of these Don't Dream it's over, Better be home soon or Fall at your feet. I am a long time viewer of yours & i am in awe of your knowledge of music for someone so young.
