Great reaction you got the meaning perfectly. The dialog between father and son were beautiful. The father voice was clam and knowing and the son's was more emotional and angry. Hello Blessing. I’m a father and appreciate your reaction and this is one of my favorite songs. We all need a good father. My real dad past away unexpectedly when he was 56 years old. I was 26 years old at that time and devastated by his passing. I became very depressed and ended up praying to receive Jesus in my heart. Jesus spoke to me at that time and said to me “I’m the Father of your life”. That meant everything to me and I thank Him for helping me to be the father I wanted to be for my children.

Great reaction! This song was released during a tumultuous time, with protests against racism and war that led to a lot of violence, and the youth were scorning the parental generation, which was called the "generation gap"... Literally millions of young people rejected their parents' culture for the hippie movement; I was one who left home at 15 yrs old to travel, take drugs, and go to music festivals where singer songwriters like Cat Stevens inspired us!

You did a good job of deciphering. Only thing is when the father sings the second time, listen to the background...it's the son responding.

Blessing, I so enjoyed your reaction to this song. I've been in a Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam mood today and have been frustrated by so many other channels feeling the depth of his music but not taking the time to listen to lyrics and appreciate the depth of the message. Thank you!

No he's not if you had the video it would show you that it's about him and his father and that although he got advice from his father from a early age he feels that he needs to leave to pursue his own dreams and make his own mistakes

So don’t be in such a hurry to grow up! “You’re young only once. Enjoy your youth! I may be 70 but I’m happy when I’m around my daughters. Then again a Dad shouldn’t outlive his son! Or wife! I guess being alone doesn’t make you lonely. Well… maybe sometimes! Eventually I’ll have to “go away” too. It’s been a life of joy and sorrow. I’m not afraid, I just tend to shy away from it. What scares me the most, is becoming a burden on my family! Lingering around for an extended period of time that’ll be a possible financial burden on my family!!! It hurts to think about it!

How the heck did I miss this video yesterday?! Oh well, better late than never! A good followup to this would be CATS IN THE CRADLE by Harry Chapin, another song with a father/son dynamic. And that's all I will say about it, I don't want to give anything away.
