My cat has five different meows, although sometimes they are a bit hard to distinguish from one another without proper context. They go something like this. Meow #1: "My food dish only has one day's worth of cat food in it, go add more before I starve to death." #2: "I just used my litter box two minutes ago, get off your butt and go clean it." #3: "I'm bored with the four different scratching posts and several dozen toys I have all over the house, for God's sake do something to amuse me." #4 "Make that stray cat in the back yard go away, even though I never go outside, he has no right to be out there spoiling my view through the window." And lastly #5: "Just because I walked away while you were petting me doesn't mean you have permission to stop scratching my back, so quit watching TV and get back to work you lazy bum." Sound familiar anyone?

I can't quite make out his accent. Maybe English is his second language? It is especially noticeable in his vowel sounds (in how he pronounces "down" and "sounds", in the beginning after 0:42 for example). He doesn't sound American, he just knows English.

Just shut the background music up. It's so distracting and almost completely masks the actual cats' voices. Similarly the narrator just talks and talks non-stop. He needs to pause every time a cat makes voices so that we could hear them clearly. What is the point of this video at all?

I think the video could have been better if you would have sampled the cat's noise first without background music and then explain what it meant. It was hard to pay attention to what you were saying and then hearing the cat's noise at the same time. More often, I wasn't really able to pay attention and then had to rewind to try to listen to the sound.

Thank you. There are many brainless idiots who put music and other unnecessary sounds in their videos and I'm glad you were able to notice it too. By the way, this is exactly why I have NEVER put music or other extra sounds in MY videos --- and I make sure the sound volume is ALL THE WAY UP.

Listening to the sounds the cats make would be a whole lot easier if you turned down the background music.

I was walking down the stairs the other day and my cat who weighs as much as a bowling ball came charging after me and almost sent me sliding down the stairs on my face.

When I was 10, I stumbled upon an amazing find at dusk , just after sunset in June of 67. I heard some strange noises and investigated. It turned out to be at least 300 cats gathered in the back yard of some elderly people . They were on vacation and they had no cats as pets. The cats were actualy talking to each other in strange meowing sounds. Modulated meowing I have never heard before or since. All I can think of is a like they were having a convention of some kind possibly some females were in heat but it didnt seem like an orgy. All I can think of other wise is a sizeble amount of catnip was deposited nearby or they were electing a leader in the cat community. I came back the next morning and I found a yellow tabby trapped in the thorns of a rose bush and I rescued him. He decided I was his best friend after that and would come when ever I would call. I was amazing toi bad the tech in 67 was not what we have now it woyld have been great to record it.

Don't think the clip with the trilling or chirping matched at all, especially since it was deliberately described as a close-mouthed, short sound. (I call it a chirrup.) Hard to actually hear the meow sounds over the narrator.

You talk through the whole thing.. it makes hearing said meows nearly impossible.

Usually when i go to school my cat joins me on the walk and when i am at a certain distance she just stands there and meows deeply.

Our cat growls when strangers come up our sidewalk to our home. He lets us know a stranger is coming up to the front door.🤗😀

My cat has a strong maternal instinct, even though she has never had kittens. She will bring us slippers and "yowl" until we come and collect them- this is what mother cats do when they've caught prey to call their kittens for dinner. She will also round us up if we are in different rooms because she likes us to be in the same place. If we are not sitting/lying down, she will follow us and scream until we do so, then she will sit on us and go to sleep. She is definitely the boss of the house 😄

My cat is a very talkative boy. He chitters and chirrups and all that when we're around and talking to him. It's like he's talking back 😅 He's a shelter cat, living with us for almost a full 2 years now. Very playful but also very sweet and chatty.

My kitty cat Cricket goes 'maaaa' so cute. She has many vocalizations and has conversations with me. So funny.😻

I knew a cat that could give rather precise instructions like open the window in the kitchen, open the window in the sitting room (etc), open the hatch to the ceiling (rather important this) or come and see this. The latter would be used when evil beings walked in the garden - or when he felt like watching tv. And a lot of things we not always understood (he often summarised his experiences during the day in a short and complex talk).

Gee, it sure would have been nice to hear the actual sounds being referenced, instead of, you know, completely random and irrelevant music.

He's CLEARLY talking while the cat sounds are playing, making it difficult for anyone (thanks for being a dick to the hard of hearing, by they way. Stay classy, hey.) to hear the sounds clearly, in addition to the fact that there is background music that also interferes with the cat sounds. Both the taking and the music hinder the clarity of the calls he is trying to explain, which makes this video a huge waste of time for someone who was trying to learn something. Also, if you listen, you can clearly hear the guy telling people to leave comments about the video, so maybe don't bitch out someone doing what you can CLEARLY HEAR the man asking for!

My cat chatters as a greeting when he comes into a room and sees us like hello humans I love you. He is a rescue we now believe was nearly feral and treated badly. Loves us but very skittish and often chatters at us like he is trying to talk. It’s taken him 6 months to purr or meow loud enough to hear.

I’ve always been able to communicate with my cats! They always talk to me with their meows and chatter. I have conversations with them all the time! I somehow understand what they want, and they understand me! It’s a neat feeling!

You lost me when you started talking about purring. Purring is completely different. Not to mention hissing and growling.🤦🏾‍♀️ This video title was so misleading. Why not name the video types of ways your cat communicates?😒

Your video would have been more effective if #1 shorter narrative #2 the narrator spoke slower and #3 the music was quieter. The focus is CAT sounds

We just adopt a cat from the shelter this video made me cry a little because he does the thank you and love you meow a lot. I told my hubby he has the sweetest meows and there was something about them now I know why.

That video would have been nice if we could actually hear the cat noises. The soundtrack or the commentator constantly talking over it kinda ruined it.

A lot of work went into making a video about cat vocalization and then you can not hear anything as it is drowned out in a background music loop.

I had a cat named Cody that had a bigger vocabulary than most people! He could even say Mama no shit...lol

I have trouble hearing the cat noises because the music and the narrator are so loud. If you delete the music and then play the cat sounds a few seconds before the narrator speaks each time, it would be a LOT better.

My cat's purr is everything but low. You can hear her on the other side of a building! My parents' two cats, on the flipside, have purrs so quiet the only way to hear them is to be pressed against them. Cats are awesome!

You never stop yakking long enough for us to really hear the different sounds.

No, it's your video, and judging from other people's comments, it's not my hearing loss, either. Excellent video! Chattering is also used to lure prey to them when outside. I’ve known two people who watched their cat do this to catch birds to bring into the house. It seems to hypnotize them out of being afraid. They stay in place and the cat pounces on them.

Our two cats are sibs, one male one ( timid and somewhat neurotic ) female. She never goes outside, and hates it when her brother does. When she sees him return, she has makes a special meow and comes to one of the two humans to let us know he's back, so we will come and let him in.

We've just rescued three kittens, and you can tell one's already like that. It would always sit on a very timid one (not in a bad way, as if to kind of hide them so they wouldn't be in danger) and when my Dad got him, he started hissing and spitting at him like "Don't you touch them, I'll fight you! Hey, what are you doing to our Mum?!". They're coming back from the sanctuary who've kindly dealt with them (they were poorly and the Mum needed to be spayed) and I hope they feel more positively about us then. One actually ran away during the rescue attempt, which I hide to find cause it was kind of hiding behind some shrubs underneath some fencing. It was really sweet, because it didn't want me to pick it up and I had to wrestle it a bit, but then I put it close against my chest/armpit and gave it a hug and it calmed down and just snuggled into me. It was so, so adorable. I can't wait to get them back.

So disingenuous...AnimalWised have not a clue or care about what cat's meows mean, as they talk over the sound the cat is making, and leave out a ton of stuff. One big huge thumb down. For those that are interested, a cat's meow signals their emotional state that a CAT person understands. But they can lie, my cat will sometimes (when I'm in the kitchen) indicate she is hungry when she is not.

One time I heard my car meow but I sounded like "bow lalalee"

As for "more noises cats make," BOY do I wish my Ernie were still around...he was with me for 20 and a half years, and that boi was CONSTANTLY talking. When I brought Cecil in as a kitten, Ernie sounded like an idling leafblower for about 2 days constantly. He WAS A GRUMBLER....and had more personality than just about all other cats on the planet put together, that one did. He was unique, and I'll always miss him.

You should stop talking when the cats meowing as a background music(which is too loud for this type of video) and you talking over examples of meowing makes them impossible to hear it. As it is this video is useless as teaching or even just information tool.

How bout shutting up and turning off the soundtrack so we can actually hear the cats meow.

One of my cats used to make a "dRRRt" sort of sound without opening his mouth whenever he said hello and expected a pat.

Our baby has adopted a different meow for each person in the house. Since I can mimic her best, she has a half purr half meow for me. For our roommate, she has a low-frequency MOWWW. For my fiance, a short clipped squeak. For her actual owner (shes our second roommates cat), a soft almost silent meow. you can always tell who's attention she is after.

The first night we rescued our cat Owyn Wylsyn we where going to name her Carmelita. But she very adamantly said "Wow" in her best Owen Wilson impression. So well. And gradually in more intensity as the night went on. She eventually ripped our air conditioner out of the window and escaped for less than 4 days. She has been really great since we got her a cat harness and she has smoke breaks with my boyfriend outside. Good cat. Much wow.

I agree with the people here, the annoying music is way too loud, could barely hear the cat sounds and couldn't hear the last Murmur at all

Here in the US we call it Hissing but snorting sounds less lethal so I like it. .

My grandparents had a cat named Snoopy. She was great for them as she gave them something to do and kept them going. Unfortunately she hated everyone else. Her preferred activity was to sit in the corner and glower at people. Seriously. When my brother was little, he would tell you that cats said "Meow" and Snoopy said "Fff!"

Yeah, I hadn't heard anyone call cat's hissing as 'snorting'. That was my first time, too. When I think of animals that snort, I think of pigs (^_^;) I agree that it's usually called 'hissing', as far as I know.

Yeah, it's called hissing. I'm guessing snort or snorting is some derivation of snout, the projecting nose and mouth of an animal, especially a mammal. snort /snôrt/ verb gerund or present participle: snorting make a sudden sound through one's nose, especially to express indignation or derision. "she snorted with laughter" (of an animal) make a sudden explosive sound through the nose, especially when excited or frightened. INFORMAL inhale (the powdered form of an illegal drug, especially cocaine) through the nose.

all i hear is the guy talking, i hear no cat sound. should have let the viewers hear the sound first then explain.

I want to point out that the length and quantity of sounds also play a role... Excitement for example also shows when your cat is meowing faster than usual, this doesn't have to be positiv for every cat is individual like us humans and has their own way of communicating with other cats or their owner... In general leaving long breaks between the calls can be some kind of "question", some kind of stress, some seeking for attention and much more... It does depend on the situation a lot and on the experience you had with the cat so far...

My Bengal cat huffs whenever he seems to be frustrated with something or overly excited. It’s several quick exhalations of breath. An example of when a frustrated huff happens is when he is trying to get a toy out of a hole in a box and it keeps dropping. The overly excited huff happens when he needs to expend energy and just starts running down the hall and skidding into my room. He will look at me and huff, which is different from a pant. He is not out of breath, just seems to be releasing the leftover pent up energy or something all in four or five loud quick breaths.

Narrator and music are so friggin loud you can't hear the friggin cats

My cat just sits on her tower beside the door and when I or others come in she boops them on the head with her paw. I guess that means we are allowed in lol.

I have 2 girls. One is 1 and the other is 4. LOTS of purring and "conversation" with myself and my partner, lots of chirping especially late at night, and my youngest chatters as insects (inside) and birds (outside). Both very happy and very gorgeous. 😻😻

Random question - but do you (or anyone else reading this) happen to know what the piece of music in the background is? I'm assuming it's royalty free, as ive heard it in a few youtube vids now. Thanks.

I didn’t hear the murmur and I don’t know what you mean. I wanted to hear the example of it.

Our cat does this sound when it's time for treats: "Mraa?". It's interesting to listen to the cat at times.

Cats can be so loving or so aloof! Sometimes when I slow blink at my cat, she slow blinks back- other times she slowly looks away and blinks, like, "whatever" :)

My stray cat says yumyumYum yum when eating her favorites wet food.

I love when my cat "double meows" and she loves to be meowed at. Sometimes I can get her to mimic me.

My cat growls when he doesn't want to drop the bird he has caught and killed :p

Oh yes! If your cats catch a toy they really like, they walk around with it in their mouth and growl at anyone that comes near them

I have two siblings that more or less get along most of the time. I'm more curious about their behavior. They both 'protest' when I'm about to go to work. My girl does everything she can tondelay my departure, blocking my way, giving me hugs (seriously), trying to untie my shoes... my boy is sit in front of the door or knocks my coat off the hanger and sits on it. The intelligence of these two is surprising that they know which coat I need and how to knock it down.
