Castrovalva (Abruzzo), Italy【Walking Tour】History in Subtitles - 4K

A walking tour in 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮, region 𝐀𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐳𝐳𝐨, center Italy, province of L'Aquila, a small town of about 9 (𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙚!) 𝙞𝙣𝙝𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨.
This town became famous thanks to dutch Artist 𝐌𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫, who, in 1929 created a famous lithograph of the town.

**𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆**
The inhabitants who founded it came from five villas. The church of San Cesidio was a possession of Montecassino. Before the year 1000 it was owned by the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno.
However, the first document that mentions Castrovalvano is the Catalog of the Barons when, in 1079, he mentions the place as "Castro di Valva" which in 1173 had belonged to Simone conte di Sangro, while in 1187 it was owned by Simone di Teodino, count of Castel di Sangro.
In the 13th century the castrum de Valva was mentioned in the Statute for the repair of the Swabian imperial castles.
Throughout the course of the 16th century Castrovalva is a fief of the Di Sangro, passes by marriage to the family of Spanish origin of the D'Avalos, to then be sold to the family of the barons Paschale di Bugnara.
After the death of Baron Annibale Paschale, it passes to his son. During the 17th century the fiefdom of Castrovalva passed from the hands of many barons; to the Di Salvo barons of Scanno, the Marchesano barons, the De Rosa barons of Naples, to pass to the baron Giovan Battista Roberti of Lucera.
From the Roberti di Lucera it finally passed to the Pomarici of Matera, who still retain the title of Marquis of Castrovalva today. In 1817 Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, promulgating a reform of the state, definitively united Castrovalva to Anversa.
Maurits Cornelis Escher in 1929 made a lithograph on Castrovalva. The municipal authorities have decided to dedicate the last bend before entering the town to the Dutch artist.

Agreed Lawsonartzy! In a way... when I started more than 2 years ago, the idea was just that,to show the unusual towns and to let people know that there aren't only Capri, Positano, Rome, Florence and Venice... in tiny yet mostly unknown towns, there are some hidden gems which are incredibly stunning and of extremely high artist value. Who knows if the channel will grow more... I hope to show more

@@geraldinehadiwidjaja7421 It's not super super difficult Geraldine, it's rather close to the beautiful town of Anversa degli ABruzzi, it's maybe a 20 minute drive from there though... the road, although in very good conditions, is quite narrow, and there's even a tunnel which is quite narrower as well. But it's a stunning scenery drive from the valley up to the town. The problem is finding a spot to park the car, but on the long stretch of road that ends up in the town it's possible to park on the side, though if you need to get back, you need to turn around the car and.... it was rather tricky)

Actually , I have to say that , very unfortunately, many towns aren't well connected by public transport in many parts of the "inner Italy", as it's quite hard to move around between one and another withough a car. It's a sad state of affairs actually... and maybe the primary reason for some tourism issues...

Jim & Betty, Thank you so much , indeed you've been among the Earliest Fans and Supporters and I never forget that and I'm always thankful for this guys Guys! Loved this town very much; I knew it before, as I love Escher, though I never went....as far as I understood there are really only 9 permanent inhabitants, but the others have their 2nd-homes there for sure. I saw actually a couple more "Vendesi" before leaving, especially on the southern part where I couldn't film as they were making some restoration on the pavement. I noticed 1 bar and a small shop (very small) at the end of the walk, though I suspect the majority of groceries and stuff are bought a little bit away from it, n the nearby town of "Anversa degli Abruzzi" (I'll show this walk video of this town in the near future too!). It's quite close by car, maybe 15-20 minutes or so. The problem I found with Castovalva is parking the car. The stunning road finishes basically where I started filming and cars were parked on the road itself. To "turn around" the car and go backward toward the valley was a little discomforting, but it's possible. Some cars as you saw entered the village but stopped near the bar!

Thank you very much MelLina, glad you enjoy the videos! Indeed, I was a little impressed by the lack of people as well, considering it was a Sunday evening ; I surely expected more. Sometimes it happens that some towns are more empty than others though!

It's really amazing how all these medieval towns in center Italy, small or large share the same architecture, well preserved for such a long time. Their ancestors really appreciated God's creation and capitalized on it. Hillside towns, surrounded by mountains. The artist, name, Escher could be derived from the same Biblical name "Esther". Drone intro is fabulous. I enjoyed video. OK

Ciao Esther, glad to see you again and glad you enjoyed also this new tour of a tiny town. Agreed abou eveything, loved it too myself I must say. I loved being there... after the walk it was nice to relax a bit enjoying the views. A shame not many people were around, although it was a Sunday evening.

Indeed Kalo, it isn't definitely easily accessible. There's a tiny parking spot before the town itself, and the people mostly park on the road. It's quite hard to make a "turn-around", as I had to experience it myself. Lovely place anyway, loved it to bits
