Does anybody feel a kind of emptyness whenever a Ghibli movie ends? Like you are leaving a fantastical world full of wonders and excitment. A world full of rich and colorful characters and places. A world you want to see more.

Honestly I think Takahata's films are more down to earth while Miyazaki's seems more like a dreamer to me . The messages in takahata's films are clearer than in miyazaki's movies however as it is more down to earth it strikes us harder when watching the movie. Personnaly I was more touched by Pompoko and his message of the importance of nature and the disaster of human overconsumption than Nausicaa. Why I believe because it's was less dreamy (and I know it's still not that realistic but it was closer to my reality than Nausicaa) This doesn't change the fact that both are great creators and I think it's pointless to try which one's are better.

I've rewatched it a couple of times, and I think Sheeta and Pazu were prepared to perish with the castle to stop Muska. I don't think they knew what would exactly happen, just that the flying city/weapon would be destroyed. And since it was flying high in the air, they'd either di* in the explosion or fall to their doom. Notice how when Pazu tells Sheeta they'd say the Spell of Destruction together, she tears up and they hug? Yeah, they weren't just choosing nature over greed, they were ready to give their own lives. Laputa and Totoro are both my favorite Ghibli films.

When I was little kid, I had this yearn for adventure. I wished that one night I would be magically whisked away into a fantastical world for an incredible adventure I would never forget. As I grew older, I slowly came to realize that was never possible. Several years later, I finally got around to watching Castle in the Sky. This movie captured that feeling of adventure and wonder that my child self was looking for in such a perfect way. I’ve always been a fan of Ghibli, but this movie really stuck to me. It still remains as my favorite film to this day.

The secret of beautiful fantasy is its reflection of real-life truths. If the themes and dreams displayed aren't genuine, they do not reach the viewer/reader so successfully. One of the best aspects of fantasy, then, may be grasped with the realization that the things we love in stories are not just "make-believe," designed as an escape from reality-- rather, they are acute and often painfully pure representations of the things we love about our world and our lives, but struggle to comprehend and express.

  • @thefieldmarshal8682

@@manthishitwack Actually, allow me to correct that, a castle in the sky IS indeed possible! As I like to say, possible, but not plausible. As a matter of fact, the technology needed to make a flying city was around since the mid 1900s! The reason no one every made such a magnificent thing was because of our good old friend, money, of course. After the invention of airplanes and airships, it definitely was possible to make a flying city. An extra large airship with a population of one thousand could certainly be known as a flying city. Otherwise, huge floating platforms large and strong enough to support the weight of an entire city could be levitated into the sky. However, I do realize that it would take, well, MILLIONS of propellers and hundreds of thousands of engines and an insane amount of fuel to keep the castle airborne. Today, almost a century later, making a castle in the sky is still possible, yet not plausible. It would simply cost too much. But perhaps in the future we would find something that could power the engines, like in the movie, the giant aetherium crystal. Alas, that is not yet possible. What is both possible AND plausible right now is a floating city, one that floats in the ocean. I am currently writing a novel about my idea, its title is "A City at Sea." Will publish it on Kindle after I finish writing.

@your friendly neighborhood gamer Well, allow me to correct that, nothing is strictly impossible at all! I am telling you the truth, the world is full of things that science and reality cannot explain. Take ghosts, for example. I guess we'll never know if they are real or not; for some people they are possible, and for others they are impossible. You see, there are people who have been magically whisked away into a fantastical world for an incredible adventure they would never forget. Take abduction by aliens, for example. Some people claim that it has happened to them, while many others do not believe it. Some people have even gone to say that they have somehow traveled into the future or the past! I guess we'll never know the truth about this. Also, I agree, it remains my favorite film to this day!

I translated mother as "it" since the Earth in Japanese is gender neutral. I felt better to call it "it" rather than "her" as English convention goes.

Kimberly Smith Oh yes, the same thing with Spirited Away. Another thing I love in the Hayao Miyazaki movies - the heroes of them are more often girls! When I was little, there didn’t seem to be enough stories with girl heroes that were not marketing grabs. Yet, I could always find a way to relate to one of Mr. Miyazaki’s girl heroes, be it Chihiro or Sheeta, Nausicaä or Kiki.

I studied like a madman and felt like human garbage for taking so long. I lost so much in these 4 years...my pride, my hair, hope, confidence but i perservered nonetheless. It was so effing hard and i wish i never started this journey but i passed. I PASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEED. Never in my life was i so excited. I even screamed just by seeing the result. I never did anything of that sorts. I am so glad and I thank God for everything that is good and green on this earth. I hope that every single human is as blessed as i am in this very moment!!!!!!!!

I watched Castle in the Sky in theaters today and is my first Studio Ghibli film I have watched, it is nothing but a piece of art. I wish there was films like this now a days. Update: Ok after like 4 years later this dated as fuck. I wrote this when I was 13. But I still cry at the opening theme and it's still overall a special movie for me.

When I was little, around 8 years old my father would always watch movies with me on the weekends, as back then TV would actually show worth to watch movies on a weekly basis. One Saturday he only told me that the trailer he saw earlier during ad break looked promising and that I would surely like it. Until then I had only known Western animation, I didn't know a thing about Japan but when I watched that movie with my dad I absolutely fell in love with the pure art that is studio ghibli. I would regularly watch the movie when I noticed it was up on TV until I got the DVD for Christmas. I hadn't seen it for a while and watched it again as an adult and I felt right at home again. By now I have seen almost all the other ghibli films and I adore every single one of them, but CitS will forever remain my favourite.

Castle In The Sky and Princess Mononoke have to be my favourite Ghibli films ever. The music these two films harbour is so beautifully haunting and nostalgic with a hint of sadness. The stories, characters, everything. Well..... I mean nearly all Ghibli films are like this. That's what makes them all so special. Thank you for letting me witness your tales from a young age Ghibli.

A far away land that has insane power is a concept we live in this world. we chase greed, but never find satisfaction until we convince ourselves true wealth is not with materials or this far away land. so far this movie is my favorite animated Japanese film! so good

My life fell apart, I stand in front of my own ruins, I'm only a shadow of myself. Things seem empty, lonely, sad and desperate. But when I come by studio ghiblis works I see a small glimpse of light shine inside me again. My life used to be so much simpler, I had not much, but all I needed in the end was to watch serene and meaningful animated movies from Japans great studios that still DRAW their works, and I was satisfied. I look back with nostalgia on these days.
