Love Castle Howard. Loved the castle and the grounds - along with the family heritage. I’m a true Howard from the Howard’s of the Norman Conquest of 1066.

Enjoyed this video enormously. Castle Howard is an architectural jewel that perfectly reflects the incomparable good taste of the Howard family. Wealthy people have brought so much beauty to the world through their patronage of the arts which has enhanced and enriched our civilization to a degree which would be difficult to ,if not impossible, to calculate.

And to think that Castle Howard suffered greater damage from the fire of 1940 than Witley Court in 1938. Yet, the owners decided to restore Castle Howard, despite the challenges, as well as the notion that it was beyond rescue. Even though it's still ongoing, Castle Howard proves that it is not impossible for a damaged building to be rebuilt over a period of time. In contrast, Witley Court was allowed to fall into ruin after the fire destroyed only one part of the building while the rest was intact. The owner of Witley Court decided to sell up because he couldn't get the insurance company to completely pay for the cost of the damage to the building as they could only pay 1/4 of the repair cost. In retrospect, I think that the owner should have worked with the insurance company on a settlement that would pay for the cost of re-roofing the damaged part of the building, as well as the windows and doors. That would have protected the damaged interior until the time was right to restore it. Instead, Witley Court was sold to a group of businessmen who stripped the building down to a shell. I am not sure on how much it would cost to rebuild Witley Court into a habitable building. But Castle Howard would be a good example for the developers to follow if they wish to make her into a country house once again.

Rosalind, the 3rd countess had 11 children but I doubt she ever cooked a meal, washed a dish or changed a nappy. Of course she had time for all those causes.

This so bloody boring compared to the Westinghouse documentary and Westinghouse Home. I think it's because our American wealthy in the 1800's and early 1900's didn't have that traditional snobbery that the British had. Not that they weren't snobs. They were just too new at it to be so boring. Don't get me wrong, I love the British and all the pomp and ceremony. American "wealthy" (because you can't really call them American Aristocracy) just seem to be more interesting.

emma beattie We aren't envious Emma. Did you forget the only reason you were successful in BOTH World Wars is because America got involved and won them, for our allies too, meaning England? Did you forget everything you use today was either discovered or invented by an AMERICAN? No dear, we are not jealous. But we do love England's interesting past. And we love your current Queen. Otherwise, believe me, you have become a bore.
