An outstanding and fascinating lecture! Thank you. I have just visited Madresfield too and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a complete picture of Waugh’s sources of inspiration.

I'm not getting it, sorry Kit!! I visited Castle Howard exactly 2 weeks ago and was absolutely enthralled with the whole place, architecture, artworks, gardens etc. I was especially looking forward to seeing the beautiful Chapel but very disappointed to see this installation "in the way", obscuring the view of the whole place from the Chapel entrance. If art installations are needed then put them in a place which doesn't obstruct the view. I just see it as films of people in four stands. Apologies to those who DO appreciate it!

I visited Castle Howard several years ago, but I just couldn't separate it from Brideshead in my head. In a way, it was Brideshead for me, not castle Howard, because I knew it better in this guise. It was an amazing visit and I even had a brief talk with the earl after opening a door I shouldn't have. I'm afraid that I confused him with my conflation of Brideshead and his home, but he was very friendly and polite about it. Thank you to all the staff and the earl for an amazing visit. I will definitely come again if I am nearby!

Thank you so very much for such a fascinating video. To understand so many of Waugh's influences on the book makes the reading even richer. I first read this book when I was in my early twenties, I am now in my late 60s and it is still one of my favorite books.

'Brideshead Revisited' has the theme of alcohol abuse throughout the novel / series / film. Sebastian is an alcoholic. Lord Marchmain is an alcoholic as well or had issues with heavy drinking. Am I the only one who finds it rather odd that Slow Motion Gin sponsored the Brideshead Festival and created a cocktail named after Marchmain??? Truth IS stranger then fiction 😏

I'm an American (as in the US) who visited Wikipedia after watching all episodes I could find of "The Hidden Treasures Of Britain's Grandest Country Houses." I'm aware of Brideshead Revisited and have watched Bridgerton but it was a Wikipedia article on "Treasure Houses of England" that left me curious to learn anything about an apparently grand house called Castle Howard. Perhaps its "Castle" label disqualified it to be included in a series about country homes but Blenheim being a "Palace" didn't disqualify that great home. Perhaps Castle Howard was under renovation or prior commitments when The Hidden Treasures was filming. Perhaps it's not hidden enough or perhaps they weren't asked by the producers. This 2020 posting was the only video I could find of any length not centered on Queen Victoria and her visits to private homes. One theme of all these homes seems to be grand structures and gardens filled with treasures of the highest quality. In "The Hidden Treasures of Britain's Grandest Country Houses" I don't recall any of those houses staffed with their own curator. Historians and archivists but no one curating presumably for an interested audience or for visitors overall. I repeat, in a KZread search, this was the only pseudo-documentary I could find representing this great house. I say pseudo because as a visual form of art, it's photo to video placements with two photos in opposite corners leave lots of white space while also making it difficult to see the photos. That is passable but the audio quality is inconceivable. Covid was apparently the catalyst to finally push something to KZread but Covid is no excuse not hand off digital files to professional producers to edit and and normalize through audio engineering. This is posted officially under the Castle Howard channel. If some such enterprise was utilized get your money back. If the best Castle Howard can do is show a curator on a single camera with a built in mic (almost impossible to hear in addition to sounding as if coming from a distant echo), then place all those clips in one half of the video and combine the (by comparison) screaming voice-over shots into the remaining half of the video. This is heartfelt feedback not meant to insult individuals who I believe have taken a great first step representing this house to a worldwide audience. Unfortunately, out of respect for others in my home and out of frustration having to constantly make massive volume adjustments to consume this content, I've abandoned my watching half way through. I look forward to doing a future search in hopes of finding a visual and audio presentation about this great house that is of a quality worthy of the home, its benefactors and such rich traditions. p.s. - I watched a 2:41 video on the JULES TOLD ME channel (2,087 views) and a 6:22 video on the TIGRIS IMPERATOR channel (8 views) in my KZread search for Castle Howard content. That required a great deal of scrolling after my search. If there is a better video out there to showcase this house, I thank anyone in advance who will supply a link.

What a brilliant video, thank you. A strange coincidence, I am pretty sure I am right in thinking that Simon Jones (Bridie) was born in Charlton Park. A large country house with a majorly amazing interior in .... Wiltshire.
