Casting the Impossible Gingery Lathe Foot | DIY Metal Lathe Part 4

Using a loose piece pattern to cast my name right into the side of the lathe feet! Gotta make them interesting somehow, right?

That’s great Paul! For your camera crew old and new “the floggings will continue until moral improves!”

The for every frame that is out of focus, that's a paddlin'
I ended up printing my patterns with 1mm holes in the backside to partially screw in small screws to help in removal. Works like a charm.

yeah that's the best way to do it. Sometimes i do that with patterns but often i just assume i can get it out without them. I always regret that choice LOL
Very cool! Never saw the loose piece pattern technique before. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Glad it was interesting! it's super nice to be able to ignore draft sometimes without doing investment casting
“For once - past me didn’t screw me over!!!” 😂 Love your, ehhh…feet. Can’t wait for the next lathe vid!

Lol hey I said I won't judge 🤣
I have the paperback versions of Gingery's books . Nice to see that there is a hardcover version
Always nice when a little luck comes along to spare you from yourself. Almost makes up for all the other times it doesn't. Nice video! Beautiful part! Thanks man.

Very true! And thank you!
I was wondering how to sand cast a pattern in to the side like that. Thanks for the video, look forward to watching more of you stuff.
He rises yet again! :) Love the logo on the feet, nice touch.

Thanks! I'm glad it worked out
I met a guy in an autozone in the US in 2009 and commented on his Mazda truck outside and mentioned mine with a brief description. He asked a couple of questions and we established that he knew the vehicle and project :-)
Ah sweet, I had been waiting for this vid since it was announced. And with the extra challenge of a Logo. Nice!

Wow, that insert worked way better than I thought possible. I was expecting that it wouldn't be possible to get the insert extracted cleanly enough, but the edges of those letters are shockingly crisp. I'll definitely have to experiment with that technique, I haven't seen that used anywhere before.

It wasn't too difficult, of course there are a million little details and muscle memory contributing but it's totally doable
Wow very impressive

looked good , ever tried using aluminium rims for casting . ive heared that that type of aluminiumscrap is pretty good to cast , does take a little effort cutting the rim into chunks small enough to fit in the cruisible

I haven't cut down aluminum rims but that is definitely the good stuff. It's a356. That wouldn't work well for a lathe though because it isn't as vibration dampening as za12
Yay !
cool !
Maaaannn... this is cool. I may have thought of this on my own eventually. If I were immortal. Neat to learn this multi-dimensional hack. You are Spock and I am Khan with your not-just-2D-thinking. I am going to take a look at the course if I remember to check it out.

Paul, do you have a link to your 3D printed pouring basin? That's a great idea.

I intended to, but I have misplaced the files. I'm definitely going to redesign them, then I'll upload them

there has to be a "length of the foot" joke in there somewhere but i'm to tired to find it 🤣
I seem to recall casting gurus have to pass a test - sand casting a teacup and saucer, together in a single casting. Would it be better to use a 3 or 4 part flask to get all the odd angles and drafts?

I've seen that, too. I could swear I saw one that had a spoon with two sugar cubes in the cup also, pretty amazing.

From what I've seen it's 4 flasks for bottom, between saucer and cup, between cup and spoon, and on top of it all. It's a fun experiment but if I had to make all of that I would probably investment cast it with a filigree spoon and a cup with a handle and my face in the bottom of the cup for no reason 🤣
Maybe a dumb question , but how much Petrobond is required for this sized flask?
@PaulsGarage

i'm not sure, that's a good question. I buy it in 30 or 50lb boxes and throw it all in a big bin. if i had to guess, 30lbs is more than enough, but i could be wrong. This flask is 11.25"x11.25"x3.5" each and there are 2 of them, so whatever volume that is. not sure the weight of petrobond, but i can lift it fairly easily and i'm not a body builder.

@PaulsGarage Thanks. Unfortunately, Petrobond isn't that cheap here in Australia & the Boss ( she who must be obeyed) has put me on a spending ban at the moment. 😏

yeah i've heard it pricey in Aus. you can make greensand though. It's a bit more fiddly but it can still give you great results.

You do realize you didn't need a false cope for this part? Just ram the cope first with your gating system installed. Turn the cope over and ram the drag. Then, before you disassemble, turn the complete mold over. Lift the cope off and remove pattern and gating. No false cope needed.

The way the runner and tapered sprue are formed, yes I had to do the false cope. It's mote of a problem with the way the runner forming stuff is modeled, that's a work in progress 😉

@PaulsGarage That's why I like making wood sprue. If I need a pouring cup on top of the cope, I cut the sprue to the height of the cope. Or make the cope high enough to incorporate the pouring basin. Me personally hate to ram a temporary mold. Seems like such a waste.

@@roscoepatternworks3471 I'm glad you posted this. I couldn't understand the need for a false cope. I thought I was missing something. It's good to know that it was as I thought, not necessary.
