There was no music until the scene where he left the island. It's a testament to his acting that he can carry the movie with no music until then. It's all dialog between him and Wilson but he still manages to swing your emotions and keep you engaged through all of it.

Few moments in film come close to his loss of Wilson. I know a couple of people who think his relationship with Wilson was silly. But I feel sorry for those people. There’s so much they don’t understand, and it can’t be taught in school. Something as simple as a volleyball can be so much more than just a volleyball. This has got to be the most greatest and realistic reaction I have ever seen of this film and I have watched ALOT of them! 24 years later since I first watched it in the theater (it was the year I graduated high school) and it STILL gets the tears flowing. The part that gets me the most (other than him leaving the island...and I have to say, your reactions to that was 100% ON POINT) is when he tells Stan on the plane how sorry he was that he wasn't there for him when his wife ultimately died of cancer. 😭😭😭 The contrast between the scene where he tells him about the doctor he knows and the scene on the plane shows how much Chuck had changed on the inside rather than just outside. One of the greatest films out there and STILL a massive favorite. I have happily subscribed and look forward to seeing more from you guys. 👍😁❤️ I will also share. Greetings from California, USA!

1. It's a good thing he wasn't strapped in that plane. He would have died. 2. Can you imagine how much back pay this guy is going to get? He's not a rank and file worker either. He's much higher up the food change. 3. To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy. Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds, work out and grow out his beard for his time spent on the deserted island. 4. Talk about using realistic tactics to survive. 5. Wilson is exactly what he needed to maintain sanity. 6. In a recent interview Hanks says that Chuck went back to Bettina Wings. Inside the opening scene package, among other things, were her divorce papers. 7. When he's talking to his friend and says, "I had power over nothing...." is what gets to me. 8.Tom Hanks is the GOAT of my lifetime. I'm 62 years old. Something that bothers me about many so-called critics is that they criticize very precisely according to ideological, technical and craftsmanship points of view. Just going to do a running set of notes I once read an interview conducted with a guy who was lost at sea in a life raft for (I think. It was years ago I read it) 2-3 months. Some relevant information here is that he said you never really know what you're doing. You just deal with the problems as they come (such as a shark accidentally biting your inflatable). The second was when you guys discussed whether you like coconuts. This guy said he is still repulsed by the compulsion he had to eat fish eyeballs when he caught them. His body took care of the part where he didn't like eating things That look Hanks gives leaving the island is acting at its best. He goes from excitement to fear as the gravity of leaving the safety of the island sets in. Its beautiful work I love how emotionally invested you guys get. I never used to until I had kids and something changed man. I think it's a great quality in a film maker to understand the emotion you can illicit in a person. It's cathartic I've never noticed the growth Chuck goes through when he consoles his friend over his wife. Like he's grown to appreciate "time" more The scene with his wife always gets to me. She has no blame and has been through so much as well. But it's so hard to see. A man stuck in time vs a woman who wasn't. Her guilt is so well acted. It's sad and it's beautiful all at the same time Kind of appropriate that the film ends at a crossroads

Just this week 3 men were rescued from a deserted island in the Pacific. They had been there a week and were found because they spelled out "HELP" using Palm Fronds. The search plane pilot said that had the men not have done that they would have been almost impossible to see/find.

6:55 - I never noticed the sailing certification. Gotta love when movies insert little plot details like that, that most people might not bother noticing or thinking about how it relates to the plot. Now it all makes sense how he would have the knowledge for sailing, and doing the in the cave to come up with a rough guess as to where the island was at in the ocean.

I saw this in the movie theatre here in Norway the 10th of september 2001. The next day I was kinda down for personal reasons. Went on a bike ride to try to lighten my mood. Came home. Turned on the radio and they said a plane had crashed into one of the twin towers. I immediately turned to cnn and boom. The second plane hit. I was no longer down on personal stuff. The next day. Sept 12 I went and saw cast away a second time. What a wild and bone chilling autumn 2001 was. Will always stick with me that feeling of dread.

I have a somewhat similar story. My girlfriend of the time is Indonesian, we had had our ups and downs and then in Feb 2020 we were reconciling and working towards a new future. The “flu” that sent the world crazy threatened to close borders forever. 2 years was too long. She understandably moved on with another expatriate based in Indonesia during those times. We kept in touch, but then eventually less in touch ….. All is now lost and I try to move on.

Memphis is actually my hometown and my mother worked at FedEx for 35 years. Tom Hanks visited the Memphis hub during filming but unfortunately she didn't get to see him because she worked at HQ on the other side of town and I was in high school. BTW the loss of Wilson got me good in the movie theater too. Felt like I loss a friend for a few seconds there . Chuck got dealt a bad hand but I was happy to see him given some hope at the end.

They stopped making the movie in the middle of filming. Tom Hanks left and lost all the weight he put on for his role. Then he returned looking fit and ready. This island is used by local natives for ceremonies normally.
