Casio G-Shock Bluetooth GWB5600AR Watch In Depth Review

Ғылым және технология

In this episode of the Good Timekeeping Show I review the Casio G-Shock GW-B5600AR-1. The second half of this video is an in-depth look at the G-Shock Connected app which allows users to connect this watch (and others) to a smart phone or tablet using Bluetooth. The set-up and functions of this GW-B5600 are the same as with other variations of this model AND the same as with the various versions of the GMWB5000 watch from Casio. So, no matter which of these watches you buy, you can follow my guide in order to use your watch. As long as it's a Casio watch with Module 3459 or Module 3461, this video is relevant to that watch.
The G-Shock Connected app is used to connect more than ten other models of G-Shock watches to smart phones and tablets, although the exact functions and features will differ depending on the watch. But if you use the app in its "Demo Mode" you can get a pretty good idea of how those other watches work. If you're interested in any other Casio watch which uses an app to connect to a smart device, I highly recommend a virtual "test drive" of that watch using that app's demo mode.
I neglected to demonstrate the "phone finder" function of this watch. Also, I neglected to show how to change the alarm time settings using the watch's buttons (and not the app). But it's fairly easy, especially if you have previous experience with other Casio watches.

    HOLY MOOLY CASIO FINALLY DID IT. The cheaper lowest-end square G-Shock (DW5600) had one feature that the "better" ones (GW-M5610) didn't have. And that was having the LOCAL TIME being displayed on the other modes (e.g. using stopwatch while having local-time, or having local-time and a different time-zone displayed) . That was a HUGE feature that i sorely needed but didn't want to sacrifice the solar and atomic time keeping. They FINALLY added that into the new module HALLELUJAH.

    An excellent video, perfect timing (excuse the pun!). I have just purchased the GW-B5600-2ER here in Madrid, and she's a beauty. It has the reflective blue trim around the standard grey negative display. This is my first new Casio watch purchase for about 10 years, as I wanted to get a more classic look and not so much bulk on the wrist. I gave away a couple of my previous Casio G-Shock watches to my children during that time too. My wife bought me a Casio ProTrek PRW 3000 about 5 years ago, my only other solar powered watch. Since then, I've resisted buying anymore watches, until today 😉 I had my doubts about the utility of having Bluetooth connectivity, but having followed your excellent instructions, I've got it set up perfectly within a couple of minutes. Thank you very much, sir!

    Could we change the white color of all white words around the red dial and turn it red like the Logo at the center below the dial..? (tough solar, bluetooth, alarm etc., including casio brand 'cause from the shape and embossed G-Shock at the bezel, it's clearly said this watch is Casio, right..?) I mean if it could be, than my dream become real that the red dial surounded by black bezel/case ☕

    Thank you for the thorough review. As a result I am now the owner of a Casio G-Shock GWB5600AR and I'm very pleased with it. I particularly like the red backlight, which is useful for astronomy. Red light doesn't affect night vision. I'm very hard on watches, so I'm expecting this watch to be as tough as my G-Shock G-Lide GWX5700SS which I use for swimming and snorkelling. But, unlike the G-Lide, the GWB5600AR doesn't scream "sports watch". I also like the design of the "square" watches where form follows function. Rectangular bezel to match the rectangular digital display. Whereas my G-Lide has a circular bezel, even though there is no second hand sweeping in a circle, and no rotating bezel as in an analog dive watch. Once again, thanks.

    I agree with others that it would have been nice to have been able to see power level of battery through a button press menu and that would keep the "clean face". As another has posted, you can view the battery level indicator on the G Shock app on your smartphone, but there is a caveat: the battery indicator is tiny on the left upper screen of the app, Why? I think they overlooked this. It's fine I guess, but would be nice to easily be able to see the charge indication, instead of needing a magnifying glass to see the indicator. Also the indicator doesn't say percentages, like 50%, 75%, etc, its just a tiny picture of a battery with filled in black. very difficult without a magnifying glass, to see see if it's 90% or 100% for me at least. Another poster said it doesn't matter that much in the long run though, because the battery tech with solar on the watches are so good, don't need to worry about it that much anyways. I agree with that

    Yes, the battery level changes on mine. They are usually a bit less than 100% and that might seem like a bother because I want them to be 100%.. But, for all I know, my non-Bluetooth watches are the same way. Perhaps they are close enough to full that the power indicator is always on “H” and I keep thinking they are 100% (but maybe they are only 70% but are still closer to “H” than “M” so the watch shows “H”). The manuals for other tough solar modules indicate that it may take several hours of bright light to move a battery from “M” to “H” so... keep trying but don’t worry too much.

    No question I love my "black/combi bracelet" version of this watch (GW-B5600B), but I have found I need to experiment to find a few things out, specifically relating to the time syncing. I had figured that radio controlled from WWVA would work just fine considering I have an old MTG-903AD which connected just fine like clockwork every single night (given where I left it overnight... BTW, am in NYC not the closest to CO but within the radius). Getting it to time sync to WWVA has been a bit if an ordeal... I think it will always favor bluetooth over radio waves, so I turned off BT on my phone. I found no "rcvd" the next morning. Repeated this several times. Even tried the "trick" I saw in a EWatchGeek video about getting reception by placing it on a metal pipe (I used an aluminum tripod I have for a long metal tube. Still no bueno. THEN, I again watched your video here. OMG there IS a way (convoluted thought it may be) to figure out when the last time it synced with the radio waves. It came up with the J 40 display as yours did, so I continued to see when it may have been synced at the factory. Only to find it was 2/10 at around 1:06. No question it was in my posession at that date. No idea if the metal bar try was what made it connect, never noted the exact date I tired that trick. BUT is seems to raide the question of the "rcvd" notation. Could that ONLY be for a BT connection? Next, I noticed this morning there was no "rcvd" on my watch... huh? After seeing it do the BT^ connection like clockwork, how can it not? Checked with the app, hmmm, it missed the 6:30AM connection for the past 2 days. Nothing has changed, everything remains in the same places overnight. No idea what can be causing this... how can it be missing just this one sync... any ideas?

    To have it sync by radio atomic clock, you have to unpair it from bluetooth...you can use bluetooth to do all the settings, and then unpair it following the instrucctions here: www.watchuseek.com/attachments/3459-unpair-jpg.13232955/ Then check that the correct city is selected, and the auto DST, then make sure receive mode is ON .Then just leave it at night by a window, it will sync by radio, and you should see the next morning the RCVD symbol... it will now behave as a standard GW-M5610, with bluetooth capacities disabled...

EXCEPT it says it goes into timekeeping mode after clearing the pairing... it didn't, it remained in timekeeping setting mode, so I had to keep hitting C to go through all the steps (might there be a faster way??). I also "deregistered" it from my phone app. Sat it next to my other one and this morning, the other watch got the signal just fine but NOT my 5600. Yes the correct city is selected, yes Auto DST BUT not sure I understand "make sure receive mode is on." If not paired to BT, isn't that always "on?"

    @@GoodTimekeeper Thanks Greg, a great help. I use the positive GW-M5610-1ER which I like a lot except for the non adjustable duration of backlighting and lack of seconds on the countdown timer. The module features in this AR are perfect. What I would like to see CASIO produce is the exact style and look of the M5610 with its busy screen and colour, but with this module inside. I think the closest they may have come already to this in resin is the GW-B5600BC-1ER (black/gold). I think for now I'll give the negative screen a miss as I need a watch that is easily visible at all times and the current M5610 is exactly that. Thanks again.

    Good review/tutorial, I didn't know the diagnostic mode button sequence before or the clear pairing function. I've had the B5600 with negative display and blue surround, (otherwise the same watch) for a couple of months. I don't know about you but I'm not totally sure the Bluetooth functions are really worth having. As you noted in the video the lack of power reserve display is a bit annoying, part of me is wondering if I'd be happier with a positive display GW M5610...

    I like the Bluetooth functions as an option. Sometimes it seems easier to change alarm settings using the app instead of the buttons on the watch. I've decided that, since I normally never have to worry about the battery getting too low, I'm okay with the lack of the power level display on the watch. If I'm using my watches on a regular basis the power rarely drops below about 70%. Anyway... I have another video demonstrating more of the diagnostic screens. • @GoodTimekeeper

    @GoodTimekeeper

    The Bluetooth connection can be pretty quick if it’s just a time update. Perhaps the battery drain isn’t an issue because it only takes a few seconds whereas the Multiband 6 sync can take a few minutes each time the receiver is activated. If the watch time is updated via Bluetooth then it doesn’t try the Multiband 6 update. But I guess I’ll have to observe the power drain issue on a long-term basis. So far it’s not a problem.

    @@GoodTimekeeper And BTW, I do enjoy your presentations. You are an excellent speaker and I like your style. I recently assisted a friend who has a PAW-1300 module 3070 which is 11 years old. The number of presses of the mode key to cycle through the modes is 7 compared to 5 on my G5600-E. This is why I don't want Multiband 6. I downloaded the app to syncronise his watch, but I ended up connecting the phone to a speaker to increase the volume, in case that is significant. It worked once, but it was a whole lot easier to set the watch manually, once I found the manual online. I recommended to him to check his watch monthly rather than worry about a couple of seconds out. His watch had been 2 minutes out for a couple of years, since his last visit to London. So a few seconds shouldn't bother him too much. But back to Bluetooth, I might end up with a Bluetooth analog/digital as my first Bluetooth watch. I leave Bluetooth turned on all the time on my iPhone because I often connect it to my car or to earphones that way. So I don’t notice any battery drain from the Casio app. The app wants to connect to the watch automatically every six hours to update the time, but this only lasts a few seconds. I notice that it can only do this automatic connection when I allow the app to use my location all the time. But, I will give you a little behind-the-scenes information about my plans for the next several videos. I’m getting six new watches for Father’s Day (just a couple of days from now) and three of those use Bluetooth to connect with a phone or tablet. So, starting next week, I’ll have more videos featuring more information about Casio’s Bluetooth devices and apps.
