Casio Diver-style Watch MTD1079 In Depth Review

Ғылым және технология

This episode of the Good Timekeeping Show is all about Casio’s MTD 1079 Divers Watch. This is one of several watches on the market from several manufacturers which emulate the general style of diver’s watches like the Rolex Submariner. This one offers 100 meters of water resistance, a 120-position rotating bezel, a day-of-the-week and date window at the 3 o’clock position, a nice “Super Illuminator” backlight and quartz accuracy to within 20 seconds per month. It has a screw-on back and an all-metal case. The watch uses one battery for the clock movement and one additional battery for the backlight. Batteries should last about three years and should be replaced together just in case one outlasts the other. This watch uses Casio’s module 5373.
Although this watch is not considered a serious substitute for something like a Rolex or other high-end diver’s watches it still looks great, feels solid, keeps the time well and costs about as much as a couple tanks of gas (while a Rolex can cost as much as a used car).

Greg - Great video: really nicely presented. The 1079 is really a nice little goto in situations where you don't want to be nervous about banging a more $$$ timepiece around a little + when you know you'll need a watch in the dark. I must confess though, I'm really not a fan of the hands; I struggle at times to focus in on the time, as they tend to blend into the background too much for me. Question: Do you know if these hands are 120/70/20 & if anyone has ever changed them? I might actually like to try and do that. Thx!

That's a great bargain though I must say I'm trying to "go solar" as much as possible on the quartz front. Casio's advice on rolling the minute-hand backwards is to take up the mechanical slack in the gear-train so the hand starts moving immediately. I like the style of the video incidentally. Thanks for taking the time.

Casio makes a watch like this with solar power but it doesn’t have a rotating bezel or a Super Illuminator light. I may give it a try (but I doubt I’ll find it at such a big discount like I did with this one). It’s the model MTP-S110.

Bought the same watch $40 best offer on eBay. Guess seller got it from Wal-mart:) Seems ok, dial ring is stiff & crown/winder the feel is it seems to have some kind of o-ring or seal on the stem. Seiko you move the minute hand backwards to set the time, takes the slack out of the gears.

Hey Greg. I also been checking my walmart here in NC, and yes walmart will be revamping their Jewelry/Watch Department. I too picked up the MTD1079 with the Stainless Bracelet $21. In addition, I got the MDV106-1avtn, DURO/Marlin $13!!! I had gone to several Walmarts in my area, over a period of a month or so. One more... MTPSW300L-1TN this model has a sweep seconds hand!!!! $13. The 1079, has a great feel to it. I overlooked this one in the past, because of the numerals at 12-6 however after feeling the heft and balance the dail grew on me. I see that you are Casio fan, I grabbed these because I was eyeing the Duro and the SweepSecond hand for a while. I probably would not have gotten 1079 if it was the resin band. I was working for a BatteryPlus before virus, and a guy comes in wanting a new battery for this big Casio(?) I took a closer look, it was a Solar. Told him to stick it in the window. He said he got a garage sale and wanted to sell it. Turns out it was a Pathfinder 1100(?) So, $40 . I don't need anymore Casio... I really like the watch you showed when you were a Kid!! You should make it point to get it repaired. :-) Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Wanted to share my Walmart story with someone.

Hi Greg and greetings from the UK. This looks an amazing watch and is great at the price you have paid for it. We don't have Walmart here but we do have the equivalent which is Asda which is part of Walmart so the same company in effect. Only the larger Asda stores sell watches so this might be harder to source. Casio are really bringing out some wonderful analogue watches and I recently bought one of the newer models from Amazon UK. The one I purchased is a classic style watch with Roman numerals with a 40mm case and has a day/date function and is 100M water resistance and is all stainless steel. I paid only £29.99 for the watch and the quality is better than some of my more expensive watches in my collection. The model number of the watch I purchased is:- MTP-1377D-1AVEF and it's definately worth a review if you come across one. I haven't checked what price it is on Amazon USA but it should be around the $20 to $25 price range I would imagine basing it on the UK price. Like you I set my time on my analogue watches in conjunction with my Casio 5610 or my atomic time Citizen Eco Drive watch. The accuracy of the Casio watch I have just purchased is excellent so far and is better than my Seiko watches Which run at plus or minus 3 to 4 seconds per month on average. Thank you for showing this watch and I enjoyed watching this review.

Thanks for watch-ing. I was not aware that Walmart went by another name in other countries and that’s a really, really cool fact to know. I will keep looking for bargain watches to review. When it comes to “cheap” Casios I find that the quality is great considering the price ranges and the features offered. I am considering getting a mechanical, automatic watch just because I’ve never had one before, however I’m concerned that I won’t be satisfied with the accuracy compared to quartz. (Also, it wouldn’t be a Casio!) We’ll see. If a bargain presents itself... I’m think of the old Monty Python bit. “Been shopping?” “No, been shopping.” “What’d you buy?” “A piston engine.” “What’d you buy that for?” “It was a bargain!”

@@GoodTimekeeper many thanks for replying. I have around 5 mechanical watches, not expensive ones though. I started out with the Seiko 5 and later addes another one to my collection which is what they call a racing dial on it. They are great watches for starting out but may be a bit small on your wrist size being around 36 to 38mm but the new Seiko 5 range of watches in the sport watches would probably be better if you like diver style watches. Orient is another brand to look at and they have a very wide range of affordable mechanical watches which have in house movements. I purchased an Orient Tristar watch three years ago online as there are no Orient dealerships here in the UK yet. I did contact Orient about this and they hope to market in the UK this year or early next year so hopefully will see them in the shops here. If you enjoy wearing a dive watch a very affordable one is the Invicta Pro Diver which has the Siko NH35A hand winding and hackable movement in them. You can probably get one on Amazon for around $100 US or less in a sale.. I have two of them in the black two tone version and the blue two tone. Excellent watches for the price and have good accuracy at around 3 to 4 seconds a day with my own watches straight out of the box. Some people hate the Invicta brand due to their RRP overpricing issues and large reductions they advertise, but don't be put off by this as the Pro Diver watches are really good for the price. Enjoy your mwchanical watch search there is a great choice of watches and brands out there.

@@GoodTimekeeper yes it is a really good watch for the price and being in the mid size at 40mm it is suitable for a person with a smaller size wrist or larger size wrist. Having a 200M water resistance is also very good, I have been in water with mine but not been properly diving with it and I have had no problem with mine. The Seiko movement is a very good one and accurate. The see through back is good also and some of the newest Seiko 5 watches in the 38mm sizes also have see through case backs but their movements are not hackable or hand winding unlike the Invicta Pro Divers. They would be great for you as a starter watch.

Good morning Greg! This is a lucky find my friend. This watch looks fantastic for the price you paid. Love the Indiglo function. I predict it will run well within the 20 sec. specifications. I started organizing my watch cases in order to determine which watches I wear and in which order. That way they can each get their proper turn. But when I work certain jobs I have a couple of watches I usually wear which can withstand the most abuse and/or they already have a few scuffs and scratches.

I have this watch, the one without numerals, and the metal bracelet. Without glasses this watch appears blurry. The difference in the width of the hour and minute hand makes them distinct for me, so the two different blobs are good enough, without my glasses, to tell time. Reflective hands dont seem to show up well in videos but it looks better in person. The illumination feature is fantastic.
