Just got a CZ-1 and CZ-5000 a few days ago and the 5000 is way cleaner than the 1, which sounds noisy. Gonna try this. My CZ-1000 i think is sounding a bit noisy too. Thanks for the video. And the camera work I found quite hilarious and got a few good laughs when you dropped the phone or the back panel when trying to plug in :) But obviously I'm very glad you didn't damage your mint CZ-1 :)

Thanks for the video, one of the only rare sources of information on the subject. I saw you posted on a thread and were saying you had the CZ5000 schematic - would you mind sharing it with me? I am in the process of repairing a CZ5000 with a dead output but working programming and changing the relay for an equivalent hasn't solved the problem. I've been unable to find the schematics after a long time doing research. Thank you for your time reading this!

Oh, man! My first synth was a CZ-101 and I'm looking for a mint condition CZ-1 some day soon. Subscribed! :D

Good fix. If you're handy with a soldering iron it would be worth replacing those mechanical relays with a solid state equivalent, pretty much never fail after that.

Good video but didn't work to cure the horribly distorted output on my cz5000. Have ordered a replacement relay, will report back once replaced. Cheers

GREAT info, but horrible camera work. I almost puked at the end. lol. Anyways, thanks for sharing. I had the same problem on my CZ-5000 a while ago. Just bought a replacement Output board I found on eBay, but kep my old one. So will either do this or just change the Omron Relay for a new one and resell it or keep it as future backup.

Any advice for getting the buttons on the CZ-1 to be more responsive? I find myself having to press very hard, or multiple times, to register a press.

Thanks for detailing how to open the CZ-1 and access the audio board. It really helped me out. However, rather than clean, I actually completely replaced the crappy old Omrom relay in mine with a new, modern one -- an R40-11D2-5/6 relay from NTE. The NTE relay is perfectly pin- and form-compatible with the Omron. It just solders right in. Now my CZ-1 sounds like new -- all audio issues are gone. Best thing, the entire repair cost about $5. I was able to pick up the relay from my local Fry's Electronics, but I'm sure it can be ordered online. More info: youthvulture.blogspot.com/2013/11/casio-cz-1-relay-replacement.html

Thank you so much for that product code! I bought my CZ-1 as old stock about a year ago, but age has still gotten to the relays and the left channel's volume has dripped significantly.

@@dlichtenberg yes, it has been perfect. I imagine in another 20 years or so, it might need replacing again, but as of now, my CZ-1 sounds like new. Funny you should respond to this comment now... I just (yesterday!) replaced the similar relay in my CZ-1 little brother CZ-101, which had just started showing signs of becoming flaky. With my big CZ-1, the relay was obviously bad... always noisy sound, or even completely cutting in an out while playing (presumably from vibration). With my CZ-101, the original relay was mostly okay, but every now and then I heard a tell-tale symptom, so decided to replace it while I was inside doing other mods... a new OLED display, and the patch memory back-up kit from www.artefacts.nl/. If you suspect the relay in your CZ-1, I highly encourage you to try replacing it. It is a cheap fix, and very easy if you are handy with this kind of gear maintenance / electronics repair. Good luck! Btw, I also wish I had investigated further replacing my relays with solid-state versions (instead of mechanical) to absolutely avoid any future oxidation-related issues. However, I am not sure if there is a simple "pin for pin" solid-state replacement, or if a solid-state version would "color" the audio signal in any way. An analog switch (designed for audio switching) could also probably be used, but would require routing power to some kind of tiny daughter board (to hold the IC). Since the relay replacements are so cheap and easy, and should last for decades, it didn't seem worth such a project.

@@gobblegobblebarfbarf Nice! Luckily my display is still going strong there’s a single line missing though. Yes my output sounds grainy, almost like there’s a touch of noise modulation or what you hear with dusty potentiometers on older analogue synths. I just ordered a new relay replacement you suggested for the CZ-1 many thanks!

Keep in mind that this was recorded in 2013. Internet exposure has made the CZ synths (and vintage synths in general) a lot more desirable now than they were then. I just paid $450 plus shipping for a CZ-1 on eBay. Can't believe he nabbed the keyboard AND the cartridge for only $75 back then!
