Grand Theft Auto Online's Diamond Casino and Resort does away with any ounce of subtlety to bring literal gambling games to GTA.
As loot boxes come under intense scrutiny after years of abuses, Rockstar's timing on this carries quite a lot of nerve. It also brings the whole in-game gambling debacle into sharp focus.
If this is where games are headed next, I'm not sure I could pick any "AAA" game over a visit to an actual, literal, real-life casino. At least they don't take real money in exchange for no real payout.

Video game gambling explained for parents: Imagine going to a casino on a friday evening. You get a fresh bunch of poker chips, also refered to as virtual currency. After a short stroll you find yourself at a blackjack table. While loosing more and more chips you wonder if you should get more. You leave with $500 less on your savings account. After night at the hotel, you are down $750. After the drive back home, you find your child has spent twice that, without ever leaving the house or having an experience worth talking about.

Your comment made me realise just how much this undercuts the games premise. I was focused on the fact it is unethical and should be illegal but from a purely in game perspective it breaks immersion completely. So it ruins immersion, ignores the satirical nature of the game itself, and is utterly immoral. Oh, also: we're getting these unnecessary online add-ons, that are little more than joyless incentives to continue playing and thus spending, instead of GTA 6. GTA 5 was released 6 years ago - we are experiencing the longest gap between GTA games. While the gap between GTA 4 and GTA 5 was 5 years, the second longest gap, you at least had two massive single player story DLCs developed and released in that period. I'd even wager that the relative lack of success of the online mode will cause Red Dead to go on ice as a series; much like LA Noire or Max Payne, if it can't be monetised with relatively little effort Rockstar wave the franchise goodbye. Go Rockstar, I guess.

Most games now might have a campaign that is 8 hours and even that is a stretch. It’s by far the best bang for your buck. I think this whole situation is just an outrage wagon by people that were never going to buy or play it anyways. It’s really not an issue.

@@Adowrath 1st & 2nd had semi anti-corporate undertones in the good old form of parody. 1st one's villain is basically a greedy landlord that wanted to build a superplanet, all in the guise of "helping" his people because of the old home planet (Orxon) being so polluted it's become inhospitable to their people. Right at the end of the game he literally states how he intends for people to move onto the planet, profit from the people living there then start to pollute it, and then continue the cycle indefinitely. 2nd game you have to save a galaxy from a defective product that was intentionally shipped out by "Fizzwidget". The thing's even advertised and everything with its defects present and sure enough it wreaks utter havoc on one of the places you go to (Damosel). Both games also have numerous instances of having to pay random fees to progress, service fees for Clank's upgrades, to even one time a character forces you to pay for a prize because you "disgraced" an obstacle course. Second game had some as well, including one instance were Ratchet says "That's it, this galaxy blows." for one fee that came out of literally nowhere to waste time (Dobbo, you needed to break into an area, turn the power on, then you get the notice of the fee to see the video to progress.)

The workaround excuse for video games using 'virtual currency' to avoid gambling regulation is as much a bollocks defense as all their other excuses. You don't use real money in real life casinos, you exchange that money for the in- house currency of poker chips, tokens or whatever they use. There is zero difference between the two - aside from one can be exchanged back for real money - and it isn't the video game version.

Really the key trick to enjoying a casino is this. Depending on your level of self control, either get money out of an ATM and keep it in a seperate pocket, or get money out of an ATM and then all charge cards in a place where you cannot easily get them while inside of the casino (hotel room, car, etc). Your hard physical cash is your limit. Any money you make its up to you whether to put that aside or to add it to the gambling pool but once your hard cash is gone, you STOP IMMEDIATELY. That way you know precisely how much you lost, and precisely what you can budget for. And hell, if you get lucky you still might be able to walk out with some extra, and some crab.

While the casino is hardly the most money-intensive aspect of GTA Online, you have to admit that they've seriously throttled the value of GTA$ over the years. On release, 2 million dollars or so could buy you a tank, the most coveted vehicle in the game. Now, the 10 million dollar reward from the Criminal Mastermind achievement (a one-time bonus that's very difficult to earn) is a drop in the goddamn ocean. Seriously, try translating GTA$ into real world currency (use the most generous one with the Great White card) and see how much Take Two thinks your virtual car collection is worth, because it's seriously abhorrent how much money you need to spend for that stuff. The issue here is that Take Two have a *financial incentive to throttle spending, fuck up your play experience, and get into your head to encourage you to spend,* and that *GTA$ have a direct, immutable real world value according to 2K, and they are facilitating gambling with that currency.*

At least with the Pokemon Casinos, they are actually, 100% optional due to using the game's virtual Money to buy the Casino Currency, the currency used to play the machines AND exchange the coins for prizes This is why in the PAL version of Pokemon Platinum, blocking the machines was almost meaningless due to how easy it was to earn money from a set of trainers met earlier in the game. You can just buy the coins and then buy the prizes

  • @Laezar1

Honestly the main problem of the pokemon casino is that you could actually earn prizes from playing them, you were expected to get more coin than what you input into the machine. Which definitely isn't a lesson you want to teach kids. Hey Jim, I think it's high time you, because it really would have to BE you, do a complete history on Gambling in Video Games. Because as we often note; the actual Gaming Theory, the history of Video Games, curation of it's history and cataloging might be the most glaring area of weakness as an art form it has. And like it or not, you are one of the bigger voices in that situation and I think having as complete of a history as possible presented, including ACTUAL online gambling like poker websites, the rise of DLC/Project $10, to the first real serious push for what we would call Gambling Mechanics, i.e. lootboxes, in Team Fortress 2 (not the *first* but the first to be wildly successful (to this day)), would do well as there is often confusion on how big and concerted the effort to get us to where we are today has been. They didn't wake up one morning and decide to do this, this has been A LONG build up over the last decade. And while I adore and always have adored TF2, the MannCo crates really were the Canary in the Coal mine and somehow Valve has escaped much of the attention it deserves for largely instituting on a large scale the very problem plaguing the medium as it exists today. And TF2 actually highlights both an existing problem, and a direction I fear things will go, as you *can* make money off of those lootboxes by selling items through trade servers to other players, and it is no in-game secret that ACTUAL Criminal Organizations DO in fact launder money through TF2 and have done so for several years now.

Actually it's kinda not genius. Casinos paying out real money is a bigger thrill and since the odds always favour them in the end they always end up getting it back anyway. Any big payout someone might rarely actually take away is gonna be squashed by the fact that other customers rode the thrill further than they should, a hundred times over. If video games could get away with paying out real money, they absolutely would in a snap. It would make it even more addicting.
