Cash Equivalents & Alternatives | Non Traditional Investments
The Plain Bagel Episode IV
Cash Equivalents, along with stocks and bonds, belong to the Traditional Investment category, while the Alternative Investment category pretty much encompasses everything else. This video finishes our discussion of the primary investments by covering cash equivalents, real estate, commodities, and derivatives.

My man, in just these past 5 videos I've learned more than all the books and searching around I did over the years, I can't fucking believe how easy you were able to break down this topic. Like many have said, you're very, VERY underrated. FFS, what's wrong with KZread! Give this man more exposure!
You've come so far in a short time, Richard. These early videos, while great, are not quite as engaging or show you as much at ease (and funny) as you are in your recent content. You've a gift for this work, and your evident growth as a presenter in the four years you've been producing The Plain Bagel (and the large number of subscribers) attests to that. Thanks for making financial literacy, especially as it relates to investing, charming and inviting, especially but not exclusively for the younger investor.

Great job with your videos Richard. I've been trying to grow my financial literacy lately and I've found your channel to be incredibly helpful and on point. Keep up the good work :)
Thank you! I'm 30 and just starting to figure investing out. This helps a lot!

This is awesome stuff. You do a great job at explaining these topics and I really like the format. Do you think you will create a video covering cryptocurrencies? Thanks.

Alvaro Pasquel thanks for the positive feedback! I’ve been really debating discussing crypto currencies, but I have a pretty heavy bias on the topic and I may not be able to discuss it from a neutral perspective. That being said, it’s very topical and I’d love to do a talk on it so I’ll probably do one sooner or later.

@@ThePlainBagel Perhaps if you were to cover this topic you do a collaboration with another high-quality finance KZreadr or even an expert of some sort? It would good for you and your subscribers. Love or hate cryptocurrency (and there are some serious drawbacks) they have got people not previously interested in finance/investing engaged in it. In other words - the video could be a big hit!
Since gold and land are both finite resources, it stands to reason that to earn the ultimate return, you should build a house made of gold. 🤯
Great video dude
Hey Bagel, great work, I am completely new to the world of finance and investments and your videos are very useful as well as entertaining. I am sure that this is going to be one of the channels that I will not regret subscribing to. Just one question, how is it possible that the derivative market represents 10x the world economy and what does this mean if everyone tries to cash in all at once? Thank you in advance!
Thanks for this video!
Thank you for the video!

Love your videos 🥰
I understand finance termenologies & the big picture from you better than i did in my finance class; it'll be good if you can share with us your recommended finance books, thank you Richard.
praise god for directing me here
6:25 , I will try short selling. And REIT as new diversification.
Wonderful video Richard. Please consider talking about Art.
Well, you’ve convinced me to open a savings account
Will you be able to post a video about the differences between Venture Capital, Private Equity, Proprietary Firm, Investment Firm/Banks, Investment management firm/banks, Stock Brokerages? I can't seem to find any simple explanations that are in depth online. Your explanations are great, this can help me a lot as a student who is aiming for the finance industry :D P.S. I love your work you inspire me a lot, i take notes while i watch all your videos and re-watch it multiple times because it is so in-depth and so simple. :)
Mortgage backed securities also shook the global economy in '08
My goodness bro that suit needed tailoring badly 😂
Things got hazy around the alternative investments, particularly derivates, but I'm sure it'll be clearer as I go along. What impresses me is how many ways there are to invest in general.
Gracias
If I understand this correctly, derivatives is basically gambling? If so, I'm assuming there's a charge in 'taking the bet'? I'm curious how that charge compares to sportsbetting fees on wagers...
How much to buy 100 shares (1%) of the plain bagel?
The suit returns.
Basically you have some other ones. Precious metals are basically commodities. Reits and those others are more speculative.
5:20 , you can make money on it. But it is hard and you have to time it right.
Hello Richard Coffin, What are the investment sectors available such as stock markets, forex, debentures, fixed deposit, mutual funds, crypto, future &options etc for retail investors? Could you just share all the investment sectors available in the world or any resource from where I can learn about all the investment sectors available?
can I get some butter with that?
Cash equivalents are basically treasury notes, commercial paper and others.
How do people actually make an algorithm with excel and other software programs?
@ThePlainBagel
5 жыл бұрын
Excel has its own programming language called Visual Basics that turns it into a pretty powerful tool, though I’m not sure if it’s actually used with algo trades. It could, however, be tied to other systems using APIs (ie if the excel program identifies a buy opportunity, you could have the system automatically submit an order on a different brokerage platform). Not sure if that’s actually what algo trading looks like though

Hey man, as a programmer I just wanna give you a heads-up that you're a cool dude. This is such a small question from someone who seems to know not too much, but your answer is so comprehensive and well tought out. It shows you really care! That's special and good.
Hello Plain Bagel! Do cryptocurrencies fall under this category?
Wow you're discussing mortgage backed securities without mentioning 2008
👍🏽
I want u to cover mutual funds as a topic deeply
Feeding the algorithm
Interestingly, residential homes in Japan are not used for investment purposes. The homes drop in value over time, not rise.
It seems like commodity and real estate investment, too heavily done, could really put a drag on the people and companies that actually use them.
Debentures? Gold Monetisation schemes? Fixed Deposits? Oh, are all those only in India???
I would argue that cryptocurrencies are a more (theoretically) revolutionary alternative asset than derivatives. Highly subjective of course. Great stuff; informative AND approachable, detailed without being pedantic. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the kind words, glad you find the videos useful! I agree that cryptos are pretty revolutionary, however their impact on the market is (currently) dwarfed by derivatives. Their market cap is around $228.33B (though I'm not sure how reliable that number is, just found it from a Google search), whereas higher estimates of the derivatives market puts it at a size of $1.2 Quadrillion ($1,200,000B). That being said, we haven't seen the full impact of cryptos yet, or if they'll lose popularity moving forward; only time will tell!

I find it hard to accept that gold is considered an alternative investment. It’s not an investment really, it’s insurance.

Hey Soupy, you’re completely right! The MBS was a big part of the crisis, but it wasn’t the instrument itself but rather the greed of the institutions that created the products that led to the financial collapse. The instrument in and of itself makes sense, but there was explicit lying and manipulation involved with the MBS securities of 2008. I additionally don’t recommend anything in these videos, I’m trying to take a more educational approach, though I’ll be sure to make a future video on 2008. Also, big fan of the Big Short :)
As far as I am concerned only gold and silver are true money and are the only investments one should be in. It looks like everything else is fiat denominated garbage.
That suit does not fit at all.
gold and silver have no risk you fool.
