Case Study with Ben Martins

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The classic saying of nothing is easy couldn’t be more true with intermittent faults. Here we take a look at a 2006 Vauxhall Corsa which would cut out and not start and then suddenly be fine again! No fault codes meant using Pico to capture a few common signals to see if we can capture the fault and then get some direction.

Great captured Pico Ben. Question, can you do some more videos using the math channel to locate issues like misfires, drop out, what does A+B means, etc. If possible thanks

A lot of the Chinese manufacturers are producing junk I went on a diagonal the other day and the guy had put a brand new crank sensor in this 2500 Chevy Silverado pick up here in the United States. Him and another guy had been working on cars all their life they were standing around scratching their heads. My buddy said give me a call and I tried to coach him over the phone being a nice guy. Or maybe just shooting myself in the foot LOL. I can’t make money giving free advice lol. Anyhow it turned out that they put a new crank sensor in it but they bought it from an auto parts store that had purchased it from China and it was a bad part. Caught it with the scan tool and backed it up with the oscilloscope! Great video thanks! Some of these new parts are bad right out of the box! I don’t know if you’re experiencing that over there?

I didn't realize that the math channels were now working on the Pico 7. Good news to me.

Great capture Ben. I've had a few of these and the sensor goes high resistance usually. I suspect the sensor actually went open circuit and you were seeing a loop of signal through the scope, rather than a short circuit condition. Especially as it an AC signal. Just a thought!

Thanks Mark, and after I filmed it and thought about it the chances of it shorting are quite rare! Always the way when you're looking at things in the heat of the moment!

@@benmartins6283 I agree with you there. I have to try hard to walk away and analyse my captures, before making a diagnosis, for that very reason.

@@markstammersdiagnostics9784 Its tough at the best of times and with the owner of the vehicle sat in my living room there was added pressure to get it done! Hats off to all those that film on the go. It's a skill for certain. Just hope there's something in there that people can take away.

@@markstammersdiagnostics9784 Could you explain to me: "I suspect that the sensor actually opened a circuit and you saw a signal loop in the scope, not a short circuit. Hi, resistance was measured using the BNC+ Resistance lead - TA432 www.picoauto.com/products/test-leads/picobnc-resistance-test-lead. It can only be used with the new 4225A or 4425A scopes.
