CARVING A WALKING STICK / WALKING STAFF

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello again, hope everyone is well! I was asked to do a walking stick with a Wood Spirit carving. I found a nice piece of Ash with a bit of spalting in it. Beautiful grain pattern once the oil finish was added. Here you will see some power carving to get a nice sleeping wood spirit to come out of the wood. I have added some details on which tools I use during the process. Let me know in the comments if this is something useful to you and if you would like me to continue to add this to the videos. Hope you enjoy the build and thanks for watching.

Yes, it depends on the type of wood. With hardwoods you can get away with smaller diameters… thanks for watching!

What a beautiful piece. The thoughtful placement and expert carving. The teak oil and ash combo. I really like you using the dremel and love that you took the time to name the bits when you switch them out. Thank you for this video

Really good to see you're content quality improve over the last few months of videos, especially the naming of the tools. The spokeshave is one that had me searching Google from an earlier vid. Keep up the great work mate, your videos are pretty darn good! Very informative and interesting.

Awesome, good luck with the project. You can carve oak with chisels, but a rotary tool will be easier for the face details.

Do you know anyway to reinforce any cracks in a walking stick by chance?

I’ve added epoxy and that’s helped on some sticks with checks and cracks. Add some Color into the epoxy and it adds a nice accent to the finished piece

Jason, what do you recommend for a finish for a using staff?

I’ve been using Teak oil or Danish oil… I want to try Linseed oil next. But I’ve also used polyurethane, lacquer and even paste wax for top coats. They all give something to the wood. But mostly been sticking with the oils because they go into the wood fibres and not just sit on top like a polyurethane… hope that helps

Hi there! Can you tell me what is the cost of your walking stick and I hat type of wood?

  • @JasonHedrich

This stick was made from ash, but I use just about anything I can find… I’ve used cedar, ash, oak, maple, butternut. They all work. Each type of walking stick varies in cost depending on the type of carving and details go into it. If you have an idea in mind, write to me at jhedrich73@gmail.com and we can discuss it
