WIZARD WALKING STICK WOOD CARVING

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I will be carving a stick of Northern White Cedar into a "wizard" wood spirit walking stick. It turned out great and finished with a Teak Oil and Paste wax finish. Added a nice paracord grip for a handle and rubber base for support. Beautiful craftsmanship. Have you ever worked with blackthorn. Here in Ireland 🇮🇪 it's what our traditional shillelaghs are made from

    Thank you very much! Unfortunately no, I haven’t seen any blackthorn here near Montreal, but I have seen the traditional shillelaghs, they are beautiful walking sticks. I imagine it is a nice hardwood, how is it to carve?

    That's really good ! I've just made my first wood spirit one and took inspiration from your celtic band one too and put something similar on the shaft. Great chanel. I'm in North east england. How long do you let the sticks dry for as I'm really new to this and only let my stick dry out in house a month before I made it ? Thank James

    Thanks for watching and happy that you are making sticks! The sticks I use are already down on the ground so a few months of drying are all they need. I’ve never cut a live tree to get a stick, I imagine a green stick would take about a year to dry out fully. Hope that helps!

    Jason when stropping do you use the smooth or rough side of leather?

  • @JasonHedrich

    I use the rough side loaded with honing compound and I have another piece of leather, smooth side up to do the final few passes without compound. Hope that helps

    Quick question.. a man brought his cain over for me to repair the handle I figured if use two dowels to reattach it but I've noticed the wood is very soft I worry if he ever needed to really put weight on it that it will just split around the dowels. Could it be some kind of wood rot. I was thinking to coat it in two part epoxy that might give it a wee bit more strength?

  • @JasonHedrich

    @JasonHedrich

    2 жыл бұрын

    Interesting question…hard to say without seeing it. But it could be soft from moisture and therefore rot. Unless you can get the epoxy into the wood (vacuum chamber) then the epoxy will only be on the surface and not really strengthen the wood. I would bring up these issues with the owner and suggest a new cane due to concerns of its strength… a good bet to be honest with him about your concerns and see what he says

    Thank you. I peeled the bark off and had it in my shed for close to 3 months. It get pretty warm in there and it has lots of ventilation. I was surprised I didn’t get any checks in this one. I have 2 others still in the shed from the same batch and only one has a small check that formed
