BlueWater Walking Stick

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This latest walking stick carving is something a little different... put on a nice epoxy top and did some stippling effect along the top and just below the handle.
This one was customized for a friend of mine, bluewateroracle.com/
A good friend for many years so I carved in her name just below the handle.
I encourage you to visit her website (listed below) and see what she has to offer as an Oracle. Thanks for watching.

    Great channel. I love what you the way you worked that staff! I learned from another walking staff maker that putting a coat of epoxy around the ends of the staff while it's drying prevents the checking & cracking. Or leaving the bark on about 2 inches at both ends. That's actually been working well for me. A thin coffee stirring stick works good for getting cracks filled in.

    Thank you... I think I'm a little late for the big epoxy rush, but I havent seen it too much on walking sticks. I have a plan to incorporate it into a carving but that'll wait until the summer.

    Why did you not go all the way down the stick with the pattern? I think mixing the patters would make it look good.

    @@JasonHedrich When carving out the lettering, do you still use the 5 minute epoxy or do you the slower cure? And how do you keep it from dripping out? I find myself using lots of tape and hot glue.

  • @JasonHedrich

    @JasonHedrich

    @@christinakindler9112 yes, for this one I used the 5 minute epoxy... it gets tricky with a round surface like the walking sticks. The hot glue or caulking works but if you time it right, using the 5min epoxy gets stiffer near the end of the cure period. So if you mix small batches and do one or two letters at a time, you can use it when its thicker and avoid most drips. Hope that helps.

    Thank you very much. For these small amounts I’m using just the standard 5 minute epoxy, you can get anywhere. As for tinting, I’ve used a small amount of latex paint and for this one, a small amount of eye-shadow (make up) that my wife was throwing out. I find you can get creative in ways to colour the epoxy without getting too expensive. It’s easy to use but seeing it cures very fast, you have to move quickly

    For this one I just used 5 minute epoxy. It worked well but you had to move quick to finish before it cured. If the project is small, you can try any brand of epoxy from a hobby shop. Once you get some experience, then move into the more expensive, known brands. Hope that helped

  • @JasonHedrich

    I first use a file or rasp to get the larger points of epoxy off, then switch to 80 grit, 150, 220, 320 then 400 grit and that works well. If you were doing larger surfaces of epoxy, you have to go for much finer grits (2000 and up). If you were thinking of doing something like a river table, there are great instructional videos on KZread (see Blacktail Studio as an example). Hope that helps
