Cartels in Los Cabos: Where Holidaymakers & Mexican Drug Gangs Collide (Documentary)

The seaside resort of Cabo San Lucas, or simply, Cabo, has become a favourite vacation spot for American multimillionaires….. and Mexican drug traffickers. Indeed Cabo is a strategic spot for the continent’s cartels forming a bridge between place of production and the key American market. It regularly tops the list of the world’s most dangerous cities.
We spent several weeks following some of the people drawn to Cabo. Here tourists relax and unwind without a care in the world, far removed from the problems and violence infecting the poorer neighbourhoods. US millionaire, Bill, is an annual competitor in the world’s most popular sport fishing tournament. Adrien and Alexander, two young French entrepreneurs, are fine wine connoisseurs.
We also met members of a cartel, who act more discreetly than a few years ago. Though the murder toll has dropped, the number of mysterious disappearances has increased.

Canadian here. Ex-cop who's lived in Cabo for 15 years. .... Occasionally I travel to Vegas and L.A. for live poker tournaments. .... Can't wait to return to Cabo. Far safer in all aspects. My Spidey Sense is constantly tingling in the US, but rarely down here..... Like any area, if you're looking for trouble, you just might find it. Stay away from the drugs and the 3:00am blackout drunks and you'll do fine in downtown Cabo/San Jose. I raised my kids here. And my grandkids will likely be raised here. Good schools. Good commercial areas. Outstanding connections to the rest of the world. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Certainly, some issues with living here, but virtually zero concerning safety, especially for tourists on resorts - unless - you go swimming in the wrong place and get caught in a rip tide.

The cartels have a bigger presence in LA and Vegas only due to size. The reality no one wants to see is they're everywhere; small towns, big, south of the border, north, etc. I live in a small, very high-volume tourist town in Utah 2 hours from Vegas, and they're here, too. As with anywhere, keep your nose clean, and you should stay out of trouble.

@@mclegend7618 - You can even be an ugly tourist, and you'll be fine. Simple rules though....1. Avoid getting knock-down drunk at 3:00 while in the party zone. 2. Even though you'll be offered, say 'No Gracias' to anyone offering 'Party Favours' and the like (even though 99.9% of those transactions occur without incident) 3. Don't even think about trying to sell drugs down here (crazily enough, some have tried, and it didn't end well). .... and that's it. Los Cabos has 2.5-3 Million tourists annually, and if I recall correctly, the last tourist that I read about getting killed was a few years ago in a traffic accident.

I also realize that poor people benefit from our tourism with jobs around hospitality, etc. everywhere on the planet. We give to the poor when traveling, of course. South Asia was another corrupt area I’ve traveled, ripping off tourists, lousy infrastructure and beggars all around. US has same demographics now, insane homeless population, and shootings everywhere. They need medication but are free to roam unmonitored because it’s an adult legal right to decline medication for psychosis. First responders can only revive over dosed addicts or book violent offenders. It’s not safe here in America.

what isn't said, is that the cartels have vast financial interests in tourist destinations, not based on narcotics. They are clandestine investors in many of the resorts for the purposes of laundering money and maintaining a shady, but legitimate bookkeepings and general profits from the millions of dollars spent there. With that, their interests in maintaining a stable, safe atmosphere is of great importance to them.

They were from a fight between the Sinaloa cartel and the Mexican military in Culiacan Sinaloa Mexico. that battle was because the goverment had arrested chapo's son. The government backed off, took the handcuffs off and let him go. The reason was because cartel members had taken almost 50 military personels family hostage and they were not releasing them unless the son was released. which the goverment did and returned to their military barracks. they stayed there 48 hours to give the cartel members time to dissappeared back out of the city

Makes perfect business sense to marry tourism and your product, including the trafficking of vvomen. It's not right or wrong, it's business. Just don't interfere with it OR, don't go there and patronize it. Just know, soon as you enter Mexico, the Cartels will benefit from you being there, or you won't be there very long.

Hi, how nice to hear the experience of someone who knew the magical Cabo of the 70s and 80s. I grew up in Cabo, lived my college and a few more years away, but moved back a decade ago...I agree with you that what was once the small town you knew, has now become a small city but has lost its charm. That being said, what this tourist destination encompasses is an insignificant part of the Baja California Sur peninsula. 99% of the territory remains virgin or has small charming towns, with all the magic that you lived in Cabo those decades. Some of the towns already have small communities from the USA and Canadians; and they are isolated from all the noise and problems of the cities. They will remind you the Cabo you knew in those decades, and they are less than a couple of hours drive away. You can google them, I share some with you: Los Barriles, Buenavista, Cabo Pulmo, La Ventana, El Sargento, La Ribera. Have a great 2024!

@@mimi1o8 I do not think you need to avoid it as a tourist destination. But anyone who claims there are no safety concerns is relating their personal experience without actually doing research. 3 Americans Among 10 Killed of 19 shot in Shootout at Baja, May 23, 2023. You can find numerous stories like this online, including home invasions in and around Cabo where thieves killed elderly expats in burglaries. When I stayed in El Socorrito in a rural beach location, I was shocked to pull up a news story that a Canadian couple had been murdered in that quaint location in the prior year or so. I agree that for the most part it can be safe. But do not inaccurately state there is zero safety concern. For example, I know for a fact from my immigration attorney who has contacts within the cartels, that kidnapping is rampant of those who engage in business, e.g. gas station owners. The Sinaloa cartel is not doing this. These are smaller criminal groups which the cartel does not or can not control. As long as the flow of tourist and investor money does not stop, then such things can continue more or less under the radar because most people will not even take the time to do some simple search engine queries as I did. Also things can change. A rival cartel (e.g the more ruthless/blood thirsty CNJG) could decide to attempt to take control of the area and a war could break out. Or the economy could turn down and the incentives to protect tourists instead of mine them for money could change. We can not predict the future. Seems for now the Mexican government wants the tourist districts of Cabo to be a safe haven. But could incentives shift in the future? I dunno.

Criminals smashed my SUV window in the WalMart parking lot to steal a small purse they saw on the floor behind the passenger seat. I do not think you need to avoid it as a tourist destination. I dunno.

40:15 What that dealer is saying in Spanish is NOT that he "bribes" the police; he is saying that he MUST pay the police, it is a payment not a bribe, everyone knows in Cabos that USA citizens LOVEEEEE drugs, so don't blame the locals. The violence is normally among the cartels and they take pains to avoid hurting the regular people, but sometimes as the USA says when in war, there are "collateral damage", they have to get or kill a person they declared an enemy and if there are others close by... that is how it is.

The question in the video asks why are milliners still going there with all the violence? The simple answer is that it's not bad for the majority. Drug traffic, theft and violence statistics show that every big city experiences some level of it. San Francisco in the US is not doing that well. Where should people go? to a cave in the desert? Many of the people having fun are consuming the drugs and feeding the need. That's why they go there. A cave in the desert would probably be safer but it wouldn't be much fun for most people. People don't go to places if it's real bad.

The primary cause of the violence is the highly profitable market that tourists and affluent expatriates create. This market is fiercely contested by various gangs or cartels, which also encompass members from the affluent "elite" drawn to this new, lawless Wild West-like frontier town...

Sensationalist video... but I want to see also videos of how Paris has become a dirty and dangerous place, full of rats and lice. Very popular themes nowadays. Baja California is a great destination not because of foreigners but THE WORK OF MEXICANS... yes, including the possibility of swimming with whales, protected by the Mexican Army.

Really good documentary. I like how balanced it was, and how the filmmakers were careful not to make it a moral tale. It’s a complicated place. Who can begrudge people wanting to have a good time? Or the Mexican authorities at least trying to contain the cartels. But who didn’t cry seeing the scenes of poverty and the woman trying to find her brother…all the people trying to find their loved ones. Very heartbreaking. I learned quite a bit. I can’t help but feel angry though that the price we pay for office workers to have a good time, and people to party (on both sides of the border) is way too high. 100,000 Fentanyl deaths a year-not mention millions of lives wasted, incarcerated; destroyed homes and families, all due to Mexican drug cartels. I wish the Mexican government could do more to stop them, but as long as there is demand for drugs-not to mention cheap labor-there will always be cartels. This documentary needed to be longer! Hope the filmmakers do a part 2.

I go to several places in Mexico where retired Americans go to live their golden years in peace and saftey. Our mission is to protect our citizens from organized crime setting a little war in the streets of several cities. Retirement villeges are almost crime free as there are no customers so brining violence would be pointless and will raise the heat with Mexican and American police. Los Cabos is a little more complicated. When the high season hits, we are on the lookout for street dealers and customers. The cocaine quality American kids are ingesting, is a little to strong than at home that they require medical attencion, or are so rowdy because of the high, for their safety, we need to quarantine them in their hotel. We require to check all baggage in their room, and if anything is found. They are extradited back to the US and law proceedings. They are barred from entering Mexico for a year and a day.

Each 'DOME HOME' costs about $30,000.00 U.S$. To finance this, every oppulant home ower must contribute funds towards the project. Here is how it would work: if a compound costs 20,000,000.00, then that owner would purchase 20 DOME HOMES. If a compound costs 30,000,000.00, then the contibution by the owner is 30 DOME HOMES and so on and so forth. WHat is the return on investment for the compound owners? Very happy eighbours :)
