The thing about this win that made it all the more impressive, he had a debilitating gastric illness all weekend. He had aspirin added to his water bottle to enable him to continue racing. He had a severe headache towards the end of the race and was feeling sick. He said himself in the season review: "I had a bit of a gastric bug on the Friday so I was dehydrated. I couldn't eat or drink because I was being ill and sick..."

Gastric flu isn't fun if you're at home or in bed. Trying to drive a 500 mile race on a bumpy track must make it a nightmare.

Just wanted to say thanks for the uploads. Been watching the whole thing from the start now and there has been some incredible racing. Never really followed Indycar but this is really good racing. It's interesting to see how impressed they were with Mansell.

It's no wonder they were impressed by Mansell. He took to ovals like a duck to water.

Nige led 222 laps in winning this race, the only time ever that any driver (let alone a race winner) led at least 200 laps in 21 total runnings of this great race (remember, CART ran two Michigan 500s in 1996).

+Randall Dubin Nigel crushed them at Michigan; he elected to go to the grid with a comparatively, super-soft front end. The softened front-end gave him superior mechanical grip and increased sensitivity to Nigel's steering inputs. To put things into perspective; Alain Prost's contention that Nigel couldn't setup a race car is in hindsight laughable and preposterous!

Wow that is hilarious. And Alain, don't you remember being outbraked by a ROOKIE named Jean Alesi at Monaco a while back? : )

Interestingly, the tracks that everyone figured Mansell would have the biggest problems on were the ovals. However, with the exception of Phoenix, which he didn't start because of a concussion from a practice crash, he pretty much did great on them.

Great job by Nigel. Just proved that he could race on an oval track.

It was not an easy race. He drove while still suffering from minor head injuries and a broken wrist! No wonder his country called him Nigel the Lion hearted.

Good memories of this race, wished they still raced here. I think they would get a better crowd attendance here than Fontana, witch is awful, but a great race track though. Thanks for uploading

Look at those chassis & listen to those powerplants. THIS was CART IndyCar racing at it's best. Mansell was wore out at the finish, toughest race he ever ran in his life BUT he held on & won it in commanding fashion holding off a hard charging Mario.

In my opinion this was a great race. It’s funny though because a lot of people will say how great the glory days were, but if they saw this big of margin of victory and cars so spread out, they would scream that this was such a boring race. It’s crazy how perception has changed. Some people need that constant artificial pack racing on super speedways now. This race kind of reminds me of how this year’s Indy 500 was. In my opinion, it’s much better to see the fastest, most deserving driver get the win. And it’s also nice to see a good old fashion butt kicking!

Gotta love the yearly Uncle Sam propaganda videos mid-race. There's been one for 1991 (Rick Mears on an aircraft carrier), 1992 (Scott Pruett on a nuclear submarine) and now, 1993, Emmo flying the Blue Angels.

Nigel looked quite worn out. These large ovals were very tough on him. He's from F1 and a rookie at this type of racing so he had to figure those track types out. But Mansell was no ordinary rookie.

I liked Mansell in F-1 and Indy (too bad only 2 years)... He always seemed to have bad luck but was still winning. Very likeable guy. But the main reason to watch those old races is the BS that´s going on nowadays: "Lucky Dog Rule? WTF! Nowadays you get lapped and you get a big phat present during yellow. Your lost laps are handed back to you for nothing. Absurd. And all that BS cos the new age fans need thrills until the last corner of a race. Why don´t you watch 100 meter sprints instead, and true racing fans get real legit racing back in exchange?
