Beggining of the final relevant season of CART series. Despite having 11 different race winners in 20 races, this season was really bad, with lots of races being decided by economy runs, tons of yellow flags causing multiple timed races and a lot of controversy by Texas race cancelation, the pop off valve changes after Detroit, the engine regulation changes for 2003 which caused Honda's departure from the series. Alex Zanardi accident after a disapointing return to the series was terrible and to be honest, the absence of Juan Montoya who dominated previous 2 seasons was also a big blow for Cart. It is still painfull to watch this season and realize the sport we love would never return to the greater shape it once had

Learned today that George Lucas had a sound guy with equipment at *THIS* race recording the cars. They used the sound clips to create the sound of Anakin Skywalker's pod racer in Star Wars Ep.1 The Phantom Menace 🤯

I remember watching this race. England and Germany were scheduled for back to back weekends. It was supposed to be a new addition to the season,taking us to a 22 race season. Oh well at least Alex survived. The medical team did its job and kept him alive in the chopper to the hospital. It did put the best last nail in CARTs coffin.

Why indy cars aren't running in Miami is criminal. Indy could Trump f1 where they race in murder capital of Florida. Quite honestly, the hard rock course is a joke and shows very little imagination. That was a great race.

Good job by Jacques Villeneuve to take the race win from two laps down, that’s dangerous driving by Scott Goodyear for overtaking the pace car before the green flag, he deserved to get the penalty but he didn’t serve it, he would have been better off to go into the pits and serve his penalty rather than throw the toys out of the play pen so to speak.

honestly the 1993 CART season needs to be studied on why it was a great season! Storylines, the racing, Mansell Mania, Mansell vs. Penske, Nigel's rookie/championship season. A lot of good things from that season!

Wow. Just finished watching this whole thing for the first time since I watched it live way back in 1988. For context, I’ve attended every race from 1991 all the way to present year, 2024. What can I say? The look of the car and the track isn’t much different 36 years later - but the race is SO dramatically different! I’m sure I’ll miss some observations but let’s try to count the ways: 1.) This coverage is unbelievably EPIC! Listen at the color commentary, the side stories, the music, introductions and the fact that it is on ABC which was available for free to every home in America. Tens of Millions must have been watching. 2.) Look at this field!! You’ve got not one but two, 4-time Indy 500 winners, a future 4-time winner, a 3-time winner (Rutherford), future 2x winner Al Jr racing against his dad, who is the defending champion while his uncle gives commentary! Future 2-time champions Fittipaldi, Lyendyk, Mario and his son Michael. Not to mention recent Indy 500 winners Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan and Tom Sneva. One could argue this was damn near a dream Indy 500 field. By the way, 2x winner Gordon Johncock narrowly missed the lineup after getting bumped in qualifications! 3.) The RULES, specifically the differences compared to today that made the race much more interesting IMO. Let’s see if I can list them: a) Yellow rules: It looks like many times the pace car lines up wherever it hits the field, so that on restart, the leader could be somewhere in the middle! But that wasn’t always the case. At least twice I saw the leader lead the restart. I wonder why sometimes that was the case and other times not? b) Pits don’t close on yellow. I really hate the new rules that closes the pits on the first few laps of yellow. Who cares? I once saw a guy dive into the pits before a wreck, but since the wreck happened on the way to his stall, they waved him out of the pits. That’s totally unfair! In 1988 the only time they closed the pits was if the wreck was in the pits. c) No put speed limit. Now I know a lot of people will say that’s necessary but it wasn’t the case here nor any time in its first 70+ years. I just think it’s being overly cautious. I will say that the pit road looked extremely bumpy which would by the solution to overly speeding. 4.) I’m not sure exactly sure all the rule differences that allowed this to happen, but I just felt like the focus was on “who could complete 500 miles first” as opposed to today, where the focus seemed to be on keeping the whole pack on the same lap and duels between 1st and second, lead changes, etc. but that has CLEARLY taken away from all the drama elsewhere on the track. In this broadcast, a lot was made of “battles for 3rd place” for example. 5.) Rick Mears, who went on to win this race by more than an entire lap, was down over a lap early on. That kind of dynamic is completely GONE from Indy now, and that’s a real shame. Back then, and kind of weird circumstance could lead to people going up a lap, down a lap or whatever. These days, race officials seem to want to replicate NASCAR which has some positives, but also some drawbacks. They need to consider what they’ve taken away from the race. 6) Did anyone else know that there was a driver who won the Indy 500 after striking an animal? Yeah. Apparently the 1st and 2nd place finishers both struck a rabbit on the track here. 7) How about that yellow flag caused by an empty can of Pabst Blue Ribbon? 😂 8) A giant car fire broke out in the infield 😱 🔥 Anyway with all the things mentioned this might be the greatest coverage of a full auto race of all time, even better than the KZread coverage of the 1979 Daytona 500.

All the "10/10ths" talk from Cleveland carries over, except then Chassey shifts the topic to giving 110% (or 11/10 if you prefer). I remember Michigan always being a grueling event but I didn't remember it always being a math quiz. Now my head hurts.
