Actually @@CasperEspressothey do work IF you have proper winter tires = Nordic non-studded or studded ones. I have Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5's in my VW ID.3 and 0 problems during this winter. Previously drove 2 winters with Hakkapeliitta R3's and those worked good too.

For those that don't know, the cloverleaf ramp is at the intersection of Crump Boulevard and I-55 As Crump goes west It becomes I-55 North and crosses the "Old" river bridge that opened in 1949. This cloverleaf feeds I-55 north traffic onto the westbound bridge. Notice that it currently has two-way traffic on it. They are also routing southbound traffic on this loop from traffic eastbound on crump from the bridge onto southbound I-55 . They are rebuilding this interchange to get rid of the cloverloops and connect I--55 directly to the bridge.. This interchange was built in the mid 1960s and has been a pain for a long time. It is supposed to be finished in early 2025. (Observing this from South Florida where it is 75 degrees)

@@jmit3491 They are planning a new six lane bridge for I-55 now. It will be to the south of the current bridge. It is likely three or four years out to begin construction. The current I-55 bridge is NOT dilapidated at all. Its only problem is that it is only four lanes and no shoulders. The I-40 bridge is only 50 years old and is in good shape. It had a defect that was discovered in 2021. It was fully repaired and reopened in about three months. There might be another bridge built north of the I-40 bridge at same point.

Even just snow tires themselves are a massive improvement over all season tires, let alone over summer tires. I live in Connecticut, so we do have proper winter support. This leaves lots of people being OK with leaving all season tires on all year. For the most part this is fine, so long as you wait for the plow trucks. Even then, every single person I know who has gotten a GOOD set of winter tires has been amazed at how much better they are. For all types of cars and light trucks, 2wd, 4wd and awd. On the other hand, I have seen people get cheap winter tires that were worse than good all seasons in the snow. Then form an opinion that winter tires are not worth it. When they should have learned to never cheap out on your tires.

Thing for the weather terrified to remember is that we in the northern states (North Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan) don't have these problems, even thought the snow and ice are worse and more often, because we have good forecasting of bad weather, and plenty of winter weather dedicated trucks, vast amounts of ice melting compound, and equipment to deal with this before it makes a serious problem for people who have to travel for work. In Tennessee, they don't expect it and don't have anything to deal with it.

Off the side of the road to keep the wheels, on one side of the truck, in the dirt, grass or gravel will keep them from sliding. They will gain some traction and stability. Best to call dispatch and tell them you are parking when you get to the next pullover spot.

We had a little snow yesterday that quickly turned to ice at stop signs and intersections. Cars struggled and a guy in a puckup truck with a plow smashed into a bmw in front of him while trying to stop for a red light. A Volkswagon Golf GTI was struggling horribly in front if me. A the red light he slid, but managed to stop and then his car slid completely sideways into the curb. He managed to get through the light and was spinning wildly and zigzagging. Luckily it was a four lane road and I saw an opening to get around him when he was sliding away from the lane I was in. I went quickly before he had time to zig back into my lane and accelerated smoothly and swifted up the curved hill. I got the heck off the main roads and stuck to side streets after seeing the cluster there. My car isn't anything great just a Mazda cx 30 awd, but I put some bluzzak tires on in in december and I was glad to have them.

Interesting. I own a VW Golf turbo diesel and my little car drives on ice like it has chains on the tires! It's a bit confusing to me, but I drove for hours during our ice storms in 21 & 23 & rarely slid or spun. I did mild hills, up & down, without any problem. I have manual transmission & front wheel drive & have been told that has much to do with good handling on ice. It caught my attention the GTI having issues, bet it was an automatic.

I wish I had a dash cam to show the struggle though, the poor guy had little to no control. All I wanted to do was get well away from him. He might have even had performance Summer tires for all I know, but he was spinning them up really bad. He wasn't the only one struggling, but he was the one struggling the most.

@@Wigglythegreat2 When our ice storm happened my tires were almost new, so I'm sure that helped. They're just all-season, but also 17" wide so that also helps, but the GTI probably had 17" also. But yeah, no tread and you're not going to grab ice. Golfs are low to the ground, which helps on ice and the GTI and mine share the same, high-performance suspension.

I was thinking the same thing. That’s how I do it if I get in ice.

Exactly what I was thinking. I walk on grass when it's icy, too. Fell on ice too many times! Ouch!!

It's easy to say when you're out there in a panic trying to stay on the road...... logic doesn't always come through...

It's ALL ice, The grass is iced, the gravel, EVERYTHING. maybe this doesn't happen where you live, but this is freezing rain and creates a sheet of ice. That turn is practically impossible to make. Just a sheet of ice. Temps in the zeros.

And I'm just betting that every single one of those cars HAD no choice but to be out there. Uh-huh. We just had the exact same thing happen where I live, and it lasted an entire week. So many wrecks, tows, and abandoned vehicles. Good rule of thumb: Except in the case of a dire emergency, STAY HOME during these conditions if and when possible. DON'T scope it out for fun and adventure. Employers -- when in doubt, please give your employees the benefit of the doubt. THANKS to all the truckers, and emergency responders who did what was required of them. THANKS for all the great drone work! THANKS for all the good Samaritans. 😊

Banked interchange ramps are nice for traffic movement, BUT add a little ice and it'll get dangerous really fast. Hope the DOT at least gets a little sand on those roads. Is it spring already??
